Stuff em, I'm still getting my nudge bar, and I'm still putting spotties on top.

Why? Cause I need light, and I got no where else to put it.

Ban the bull bar? Ban the dick/pussyheads who don't know how to control a car let alone a 2tonne 4wd around metro area's.

banning is not the way to go. I believe in better driver education. So bring on the another class of license for vehicle with floor clearance of a certain height(200mm?) that will cover all off road 4wd.

it seem to be a lot of people drive off-road 4wd due to the fact that they lack driving ability. Trying to get all the help can by either the higher seating postion or if I crash I am not going to get hurt as bad. That is just WRONG, if you can't drive, stay off the road. Its too easy to pass the driving test here. Should have system like Germany, theory and partical exam. you must have 15 lessons for both, if you fail, you have to wait for a month and after 3 goes you have to wait 6months before you are allowed to sit the exam again.

Its not so much the driver inability though. I am sure (maybe plonky can confirm) that more pedestrians would be hit because of there not paying attention when crossing the road, or taking silly risks when doing it. Sure a 4WD with a bull bar is going to make a bigger mess in an accident, but people are still going to be hurt regardless if a bull bar is on the car or not, and pedestrians will still be injured and killed if bull bars are banned.

I don't live in a city of mainland proportions but I am happy when I see a new SUV-4x4 on the road. Why? Because there is one less prehistoric oil burning / oil dropping POS on the road. The modern SUV is very different to that of yester year, with impact zones and airbag technology not to mention the start of control systems for yaw and pitch.

Not that long ago there was an article in the sun from some good doing woman about mum/SUVs and children. She ended the article with saying what she drove and how it suited her needs. Want to guess what age her car was? And then on average the maintenance done on cars of such age? And she really shouldn't have opened her mouth on crash protection. Alot of people open their mouths on this subject with the brain in neutral. It is extremely complex and in some cases the information being used is extremely flawed.

This is a really dangerous argument when people start calling for bans. People who do so obviously weren't around in the super car scare.

Bare with me. Modes of transport can be broken and dissected in any way you want. Size, weight seating capacity, it really doesn't matter but the moment one starts on not being used to its intended design then you have lost the argument.

For example what performance car is used to 100% of its capabilities? Do we then say lets ban every car greater then 2 litres from the city limits? The speed limit is 50kph. Obviously a car with greater then 2 litres is going to be heavier and less efficient in populated areas. Where do we draw the line? Do we increase fares on public transport because buses weigh over two tonne or they obscure vision? What about Vans? Last time I was in Sydney they were everywhere and my X ray eyes must have been down for the day because I couldn't see through them or around them either.

As a group we have more to lose if such action is taken against what is effectively a very powerful lobby. What is next? Chances are the attention will turn to us and that is something I don't want to see. That’s like saying we will stick own nose in your business but stay the hell away from my modified 350 kw XR6.

It’s not the type of vehicle that cut you off it’s the driver of that vehicle. Chances are they would have done it regardless of what they were driving. The A pillar in the right sport is just as hard to see around as a SUV blocking your view. That part of the argument is void. It’s just a lack of common courtesy to fellow road users that is lacking across the board.

Last week two people were killed in a three car collision. A Magna was stopped on the highway waiting to turn into their home. A woman in a 4x4 hit the stopped car from behind at 110kph. The Magna had its wheels turned towards the driveway waiting for oncoming traffic to cease. The impact sent the Magna into the face of another 110kph SUV. The husband and wife in the Magna were killed instantly. What is the cause of the accident? The nature of the accident probably means they would not have survived if different cars were involved. They had nearly as much chance as being cleaned up by a semi as it is a freight route. The death was cause by inattentive driving but one cant help wonder what if!

What people need and what people do with their acquisitions are two different things entirely. If you see a person in the city with a SUV and it is clean and shiny they obviously don't need it? What if they have a bad back and have been told they need a car of this type to avoid further pain. Bending down to enter a car is no longer an option for these people and the medical profession are advising people in this direction. Yes they have other options but in nearly every case those other options are just as un gamely for other road users. SUVs are well appointed. If you a buyer of value, then these types are attractive, their feature list is high. European SUVs offer far better resale value and features then their sedan counterparts. Is value in your purchase a need? Or does it only apply to us when we tick the luxury pack option on our XRs. It’s the same thought process. Granted the consequences of our actions might not be the same if a certain set of circumstances occur. Yes there should be no incentive to buy these cars. No tax break but I stop at this point.

I believe this issue is real with very real concerns and equally consequences. Pedestrian friendly bull bars weren't heard of 5 years ago but they are now. Cars like the Territory which recognize the need for SUVs to change for both occupants and others are industry driven base on consumer input. That is where the answer lies. Weight is an enemy in these cars and it does need to be addressed but lets not forget that a our cars aren't light either. Whenever there is a situation where someone is trying to tell someone else what they can have or where they can drive it there is going to be trouble. There is no winner, it is an un-winnable argument because when the reasons are analyzed they can be turned on your own purchases and uses because there is always something smaller and lighter.

Perhaps the bike lobby was right all along.

I shouldn't be stopped from spending my money on what I want to drive....it is the same as someone preventing you from driving an XR6T purely because Turbocharged cars have been scientifically proven to be driven by anti social renegades that want to race people at traffic lights and are an indirect cause of road trauma because of built up sexual frustration from not having a large V8 engine.
