A call to IT geeks out there ...

I'm starting to get into DVD ripping, burning, etc. and I'm constantly coming up against a problem where the source is larger than the destination VCD, SVCD, DVD, etc.

I have Nero Pro + Nero Vision 2, but it's still awkward. :spoton:

Does anyone have any recommendations for software that will just do the conversion to MPEG2 and split the output into chunks?

Any help is appreciated.

I have heard that Clone DVD does the whole lot with a single click. Ie it decrypts, shrinks (if required), and burns all in one go. It is supposed to be very good for backing up your dual layer DVDs onto a single-layer disc.

Only what I have been told though. I haven't had a chance to use it yet.

Cheers

Oh wise one...I humbly offer the following information. It also depends on what you are converting.

If you want to "back-up" your DVD....there is a great freeware program called DVD Shrink. You get to choose which Audio channels you want to save ( eg. DTS, DD, PCM etc ) and which Languages. It then compresses the final output automatically to your HDD with whatever compression is required to fit on your DVD.

If you forget about the additional soundtracks and menu screens....you come pretty close to 90% video quality of the original movie.

However, if you are converting AVI ( Digital Camera ) to MPEG...this program is not much help.

I have done a couple.. with mixed successes..

However I use clone DVD to rip it.. then I take the largest file in the folder (which is going to be the movie) then I use dvd shrink to shrink em down to the size I want and burn em onto a dvd..

Tried a few different ones with varying levels of success....

Go to http://sourceforge.net and you'll find a load of free apps - one of which should really help ;)

Pedro....you can use DVD Shrink on it's own and eliminate the need for Clone DVD.

This will save you some time....and hopefully offer a higher success rate.
