performance cars should only come in manual, I must say im not that impressed with mine, its sticky in the gates and third does not like to play on downshift without quick double clutch.

Impedes on my driving style (sideways) :hiall:

I drive both and choose manual, its a personal choice I suppose. Having the auto in sports mode pings me.

I always prefer manuals in a performance car that I plan on driving hard. You just cant beat that manual link in the chain for getting closer and having the most control of the action. There are just too many things you can do that you can not do in an auto.

The auto is pretty good - dont get me wrong - but one thing that I dont like is that you cant force it to stay in a gear. I could (if forced...and I mean FORCED) put up with the auto, but Id prefer it that when in sports shift mode it always stays in the gear you want it to be in...even to the point of stalling if needs be.

This idea of "you are going into a slow corner in 4th...and even though the engine has the power to pull out of the corner, Im selecting 3rd or 2nd for you" just doesnt cut it for a supposed manual-override mode.

Manuals rule for people who drive hard. Auto's rule for people who just drive, or who sometimes drive a bit hard.

You just need to look at most racing formats to see that manual rules for getting the most performance when pushing the limits of a vehicle. (F1 is a bit different for a lot of reasons....and likely returning to manual mid next year anyway)

The only concession I would say I give to Autos is in serious drag cars (which arent relevant to the road anyway). For those vehicles, autos rule as they can handle silly levels of torque and no requirement for subtelty. (Although in the REALLY serious drag cars, they have one gear and several manual clutches, so they are really manuals in a way).

Mickq you're a bit wrong regarding the auto in the "T". If you have the auto in manual mode and go into a corner in 4th it will stay in 4th until you either change it or stop. I have had my auto modded and it changes like a manual, without having to drop revs. I believe that the manual has some sort of protection so that when you change the power drops a touch, even if flat changing. I stand to be corrected though. I'm not sure where you are located but if you're in Melbourne you can take "BOOF" for a spin and decide for yourself. If your interstate nodoubt someone else may make the same offer.

Yeah, I agree with geea. Unless your going REALLY slow the auto will stay in the selected gear, it sill only change back to 1st for you when you have nearly stopped.

I havent tried the "go into a very slow corner in 4th gear and see it change to another gear" trick myself, I must admit. Didnt occur to me while Ive been driving them. When I next drive one I will give it a go.

I have, however, read the reviews in a half dozen mags including Motor and Wheels that clearly state it was the one downside they found of the auto in sport shift mode....in some circumstances it over-ruled the drivers decision....and the 4th into a very slow corner then accelerate out scenario is exactly as they mentioned. They did however say the other way was great- you could bounce it off the rev limiter all day and it would never select the next gear.

I'll go play with a mates auto in the next week and suss it out more closely. Id be quite interested to see if both Wheels and Motor (and whatever others) were wrong on that. it would definitely change one aspect of my opinion of the auto.
