As far as I could tell from what the office guy told me, they did something to the wategate bypass. This will cause it to get less "top end" boost. (whatever that really means). They think I will "not really be able to notice the difference". The only other thing I could get out of them was that they had "disconnected the electronic control of the wastgate". The office guy could not explain what that ment.On the way home I floored it in 2nd. It definately felt down on power. Very flat. No surge of torque in the mid range. Jeeze. If I had wanted a NA XR6 I would have bought one and saved thousands of $. I will have to check it out more to be sure, but it really did seem pretty obvious to me that it was down on grunt significantly. They claimed it was only a temporary fix. They are working on the problem. To me I am not sure if it is an acceptable fix, even temporary.Has anyone else come across this 'proceedure'? Anyone have any more insight into what they have done. I will have to go back and ask to talk to the mechanic who worked on it, but I may not be able to do that for a couple of days.Prof.
profrat Member 126 Member For: 21y 5m 23d Location: Eastern Victoria Posted 15/10/04 03:16 AM Author Share Posted 15/10/04 03:16 AM I finally got a bit more info on what they did but if any one can elaborate on this I would be greatful. They have by passed the computer control (via a vacume hose) of the wastegate.I understand this to mean that the computer, under normal curcumstances is able to increase boost at certain engine speeds (mid range?) Is this correct. The car certainly feels a bit flat now. especially in the mid range.I am certainly not happy with this 'temporary fix' as you can imagine. Anyone have any insights to add to this? HIPWRED Member 68 Member For: 21y 25d Gender: Male Location: Brisbane, Australia Posted 15/10/04 04:05 AM Share Posted 15/10/04 04:05 AM Just put my XR6T in for its 30k service a bit early as I wanted to get a towbar fitted. With my idle problems they said they 'cleaned out the throttle body and reset some values in the ECU' Now have no problems in that department. No changes to the turbocharger system that I know of. My boss also has an XR6T auto and has not experienced anything like whats described here. Perhaps it is the fuel after all?Leigh
HIPWRED Member 68 Member For: 21y 25d Gender: Male Location: Brisbane, Australia Posted 07/01/05 09:26 AM Share Posted 07/01/05 09:26 AM Now HERE is something interesting. I drove down to Canberra from QLD for Summernats. Filled up twice on the way down (on Ultimate), and had none of the problems mentioned here.I get to Canberra, and fill up on Optimax. Sure enough... the EXACT symptoms mentioned here happened to me only 5kms after filling up (and it was a big fill too - only had 10 litres left in the tank). This seems to fit the theory that fuel quality seems to be the issue.Any more news from you guys?'nix
NighEve Member 193 Member For: 20y 4m 7d Posted 07/01/05 12:04 PM Share Posted 07/01/05 12:04 PM profat - you are going through the exact same routine I did about 3 months ago (and it pains me to have to recall the whole frustrating experience and yet I jate to see another person get farked around by those useless dicks at Ford). They take away electronic control of the wastegate meaning that the electronic solenoid for the wastegate is no longer being used to manage boost levels, and instead it will rely on manual actuation. I don't know the actual reason why this does not work so well when disengaged (although I have a few theories, but I will not waste your time writing them here). They take this approach because the aggressive protection features of the Ford program are set too close to actual normal driving conditions (and let's face it this is supposed to be a performance orientated car so you should be able to accelerate WOT and expect it to work everytime!). Evidently Ford have taken a very nasty approach to this. If they were to allow more scope in the boost before the protection kicked in they are probably conscious that there would be XRs making higher power and perhaps more prone to warranty claims (they are already in over their head with these as it is!). Their soultion, waste our time pretending to help offering bullsh*t quick fixes that don't fix anything but actually choke performance and make the car dangerous in certain driving conditions whilst our warranty time runs out. Ok - sorry for that rant - but that's the way you start thinking when you get nowhere with this unprofessional and incomponent company. I love my car but will NEVER buy another Ford again. You will undoubtedly like me get the sh*ts with this so-called temporary solution very quickly and probably want the electronic conrtol to go back to the PCM. The sad thing is that even if you get to the top of the food chain at Ford's customer complaints, despite fiegning they care and making some efforts to help calling dealers etc, ultimately I was still left with an unsatisfactory car. Frustrated with it all and with the intention for a bit more power as well I bought the SCT flasher (all problems solved within about 5 minutes of opening the delivery box and plugging it in). Whilst I think it is terrible some of us have to modify our cars to actually make them work properly, this is the only thing I know from my experience has worked. I couldn't care less about Ford's response to me modifying the PCM as they have given me no other choice and the alternative is just not accpetable. Please don't think I am trying to push you to buy the flasher as this is only one of the solutions other people have taken. Despite the many reflashes from Ford (including the supposed miracle one recently before xmas), the only trick I found worked for a while before the PCM "learnt" through the error information (re: boost levels) was to disconnect the battery for 20 minutes when I found it was getting worse. A service "technican" ( they don't deserve that name!) told me that the error codes become erased in this process. I was told that between reflashes if they have found significant error codes that they try to "reset" the PCM by taking this process after loading the new program. In theory this makes sense because the PCM would have to relearn how to adjust itself to the specifics of the car when an updated set of parametres are introduced (starting from scratch aka reset, is obviously a faster way of achieving this starting point). Sadly you lose your clock and radio memory too obviously. This is the only thing they seem to have gotten right because I tested it with the SCT maps as well just out of interest after having some dramas the other day. I had put in about 15 litres of Vortex fuel because I had no choice at the time. I noticed the performance dropped considerably (the hot day didn't help either) - after filling up with some Ultimate and doing another 50 od clicks it still drove sh*tty obviously because the PCM had configured itself to the 500 odd ks of the lower octane fuel). I did the d/c battery trick and the car immediately came back to how it was before the lower octane fuel. If you are getting grief from your dealer and have been back several times - don't bother trying to speak to them, and don't bother speaking to some useless call officer - ask for the manager (his name is Peter) of Customer Complaints at Ford. Make him organise for you a time to get one of their specified dealers to look at it thoroughly. Get him to guaruntee that they have their new "fix" flash and they will definitely fix your car. Make them earn their money - you have probably wasted some of yours dicking around by now - it's only fair given the fact they MUST try and help re: warranty. Make him do the running around and act as the liaision between the dealer and you (this way you will at least be told more detail and they are more conscious about how they treat you with a manager on their back).Good luck....
