I Thought there was a power to weight ratio restriction on L and P plate drivers in Victoria.

There is meant to be, but it lasted about 5 minutes. I think the law still applies here but the young guys seem to have ways to get around it.

It may be in place but it is not policed. :spoton:

Probably more lack of concentration than to much motor, our thoughts are with their families.

There are limits on motorbikes/scooters etc why not cars

1. No vehicle larger than 100kw (Incl. P-Platers)

2. No passenger for learners (except instructor)

3. No phone/AUDIO/Eating etc

Newxr

The problem I have with this is that if you restrict the type of car a younger person can drive - - they will go out and buy the cheapest car they possibly can that fit the limit. So instead of having a accident in the Falcon that Daddy bought - the driver ends up pranging a 1985 laser.

My parents were in a head on about a year ago when a drugged out moron drove across a fairly main road in Canberra directly into them (VG might remember it?) They were driving 70 & he was on about 85 (for those that can't add - that's 155km/h impact). They were told that the only reason all 3 people lived was because they were driving a new family sedan (AU Falcon). If they were driving a smaller or older car (like his Datto) all three would be dead.

I guess my point is - If it was my child that was driving, I would want them driving the best/safest car possible.

I don't have any problems with your logic JJ_Phantom. They can have a safe large family sized car with a less potent motor. eg 145kW V6 Commodore, NOT 250kW R8 !!!

Castlemaine is in Vic Tom,

To Dags and 'hoon....

Never been there....(Castlemaine , that is) I made an incorrect assumption. I assumed that as there is a restriction on vehicles that L platers could drive, the media would have picked up on it.....

Never the less.... tragic story.

I'll bet there will be a more concerted effort to police this issue within 3 months!

Very sad indeed..............

Agree with the argument about power restrictions for L and P drivers. Also I passanger (the instructor in the case of the L driver). Then incrimental power increases in motors as the P plater gets more experience, say yearly.

There was an unfortunate accident here (WA) on the weekend when a 4WD overturned in a paddock, the driver was 15, all the police were interested in (on the media that is) was why was a 15 year old driving, I have no problem with that on private property, what I had a problem with was the young lass killed was riding in the tray, that was stupid, unfortunately she got pinned under the roll bar.

The wheels of motion don't turn too briskly in government, but when they do turn you can bet you'll get a decision whether you like it or NOT.

Three months was an optimistic time frame too.

cheers
