Does anyone know how to fit a GT steering wheel? As I have an opportunity to buy one off a friend who recently wrote off his GT.

Basically I need to know the exact procedure that is involved when changing over from a standard steering wheel to a GT one - including the steps to take to ensure the airbag remains intact.

The only thing I am aware of is that I need to disconnect the battery terminal for half an hour to disable the airbag before I can take the steering wheel off. Is this correct??

If anyone can shed some light on this procedure I would greatly apprecate it.

Cheers.

Mick put my GT wheel on, here we go.

1) Disconnect battery.

2) Turn steering wheel 90 degrees to one side.

3) Undo torque screw.

4) Turn wheel so its positioned 90 degrees in the other direction.

5) Undo other torque screw & re-centre the steering wheel.

6) Remove wheel centre slightly back to access the 2 airbag connectors.

7) Completely remove wheel centre,

8) Undo wheel centre nut.

9) Pull wheel off(be patient, and jiggle it pulling it back applying even pressure at both sides.

Installing the GT wheel is just a reversal, emphasing the battery is to be reconnected LAST. You dont need to wait 1/2 hr, so long as the battery is disconnected prior to any wires being connected/disconncted. Also, make sure when you are putting the centre piece back in that you don't pinch the airbag wires, there isnt alot of clearance for them.

Are you absolutely sure??? Most airbag systems remained armed for a period of time after the battery is disconnected. Some sytems are different but giving it an hour puts you in the clear. Most vehicles also have anti-tamper screws that can only be moved with a special tool.

Yep, done it twice. The anti-tamper device is the two torque screws on the back. BTW, this was performed at Ford.

BATRB, if youre unsure about doing it yourself, dont do it. But if you can watch the Ford mechanic do it, you'll laugh at how pathetically easy and quick the process is. God knows what they will charge to do it for you.

BTW, the GT wheel is awesome.

Good to hear my technique doesnt just work for me!

BTW, Rob left out a very important tip;

11) Once new GT wheel is fitted, go to nearest fridge and grab a beer, so you can sit back and admire newly fitted GT wheel. And laugh at Ford for charging $35.
