I was told that there is a new additive developed and just becoming available for the LSD diff (T & XR8). One of the diff thump/clunk problems (may be others on reading the issues here) is thought to be due to the clutch cones in the diff catching and then releasing and this new additive should help.

Also told that ford is quietly working on the diff whine problem for both series 2 and existing vehicles and to hang on - again this is only experienced by the T & XR8 (GT not mentioned).

I don,t know whether running in proceedures have something to do the final outcome in g/box tailshaft, diff servicability but I imagine severe shock to the drivetrain early on or any time wouldn,t be good.On the other hand the drivetrain should be engineered to withstand the rigours of spirited driving.Having owned cars with toploaders, BW single rail, muncie ,aussie 4 speed I would say that the XR6T has a very touchy driveline in comparison and almost feels like an oil soaked and softened gear box mount and so far at 5700 km,s no problems.I spend a lot of time in a 4x4 in low range off road where clutch work has to be very delicate so smooth shifts with no backlash in the XR are relatively easy in comparison, but you can bet I,m listening carefully for any strange noises.I sympathise with those who have treated their car well and yet have these problems. :kissmy:

My car had 60km on the clock when it started clunking. I never had a chance to drive it hard and it only had 14km when I picked it up. I doubt the runin has much to do with it

Here goes mine: First diff whine started at about 5,000kays at 95kph only, replaced by 11,000kays. Second diff was alot worse whined at 40k, 75k and 90 through to 110k where severe shudder then occurs. Second diff also instigated clunking in the driveline. Can actually overcome by doubling the clutch which takes up the slack in the driveline. Third diff on order. Have researched with much help from my dealer and got a grade 10 diff coming next week. The diff is being trialed in the diff company's test car, to ensure it is ok before being sent to the dealer to fit to mine. Fingers crossed :nono:

I have completed so much testing in this car now that personally I believe the problem is in the design of the the whole driveline. My Gearbox has a whine in 3rd when cold which is apparently "within limitations' the car clunks, shunts, and whines through the driveline. I would suggest if it was replaced with superior hand built parts then most of the problem would be resolved. It seems that when not under load the driveline 'Slackens" then when power is re-applied it snaps back.

Just my 2c :nono:

I would hate to think what the "hand built" units cost ford/dana.

My car is in for service in the morning, I guess they will be ordering me a grade 10 diff and gearbox to fix my cars "issues"

ZAP did you ask them to order you one? Mate standard ordering procedure is online, and you tick a box. If you want a hand inspected one they have to ring the supplier directly and request it verbally. :nono:

They are not fixing it tomorrow, they are going to see what is causing the problem and also measure the backlash to see if Ford will replace it. When they tell me its the diff or gearbox, I will tell them to order a size 10 over the phone

Just my 2c

I am no mechanic, but this sure seems to be the case on my car, even if you give it slight throttle after being on cruise at freeway speeds it tends to clunk and make noise. Starting to really get over the assorted stupid noises my car ,akes when driving around...
