Proposed US law "opens" ECU (PCM) codes

Hi All

Just found this story on the Wired website about a push to make car manufacturers publish their proprietary diagnostic fault codes, in an effort to open the car servicing market to more competition. (The story is copyright Wired, so it's probably not wise to copy the article directly onto the site...)

It would be nice to get something similar happening over here - what do you think ?

Should the Ford dealer network be the only organisation that can do more than a simple oil change on your T, or would you like the ability to see exactly what is going on ?

Could this lead to ECU crack for the Ford like the LS1 edit. Surely it would speed things up if it were to happen. MAYBE, I might be talking out my a$$.

Kind of sort of like that law suit filed against Microsoft, which forced them to release some of its secwet source code for Windows. Sounds like a good idea anyway.
