Guest Modi Guests Posted 01/06/04 12:55 AM Share Posted 01/06/04 12:55 AM since making modifications to air intake and adding BMC filter to my T, ive noticed that on a cold start it blows a fair bit of white smoke for a while and the exhaust tip which used to be black is now looking a bit grey. Obviously more air is getting into the engine now and the ecu is sposed to compensate by putting in more fuel. Anyway my beast appears to be running lean. It has been about 400km since I did the mod. My question is, should the ecu have got it's sh*t together by now? and if so is it worth getting this to a dealer to get it tuned? I don't wanna be putting the crappy stock filter back in. If there isn't any then they'll probably shrug their shoulders. I can't imagine an air filter or intake mods causing the car to blow smoke and I doubt the car would run lean because this. On cold mornings my car can have little puffs of white smoke too. ZAP No boost, no bottle, just my foot on the throttle! Lifetime Members 7,935 Member For: 21y 4m 3d Gender: Male Location: Sydney Posted 01/06/04 06:03 AM Share Posted 01/06/04 06:03 AM Are you sure its smoke not condensation ?As it is getting cold most cars will blow condensation out the exhaust until the pipes warm up.If you are gettin white smoke something is VERY wrong. Also your exhaust tip should be Grey as this is the correct colour of a car running right. Black means its rich, white is lean, grey is good. The ECU would have compensated about 1 second after the mod, I am sure your car is fine Link to comment https://www.fordxr6turbo.com/forum/topic/11068-white-smoke-on-cold-start/#findComment-129094 Share on other sites

Guest Modi Guests Posted 01/06/04 10:05 AM Share Posted 01/06/04 10:05 AM Thanx guys I guess it could be condensation although it runs a good lot of smoke for a while and the temp aint too cold up here in queensland. It isn't pinging or showing any other signs of lean running. I spose I'll just keep an eye on it for a while. Its due for its 3000 service in 1400kms. If it gets any worse I'll take it in to the dealer before then. I'd rather have a black exhaust tip than a grey one. My falcons before this one have always had nice black exhausts. Also I spose I'm a little paranoid with this beast as it's my first new car. Lifetime Members 7,935 Member For: 21y 4m 3d Gender: Male Location: Sydney Posted 02/06/04 04:48 AM Share Posted 02/06/04 04:48 AM I stopped being a mechanic 15 years ago. I left school at 15 and went straight into mechanics. After I got my ticket, I left and I am now a Computer Network Engineer, so the mechanics are a bit rusty. VL commanhores were brand new and EFI was also new when I was doing my trade. I learnt on Carbies and Super petrol not EFI and ULP.I feel old now Link to comment https://www.fordxr6turbo.com/forum/topic/11068-white-smoke-on-cold-start/#findComment-129473 Share on other sites
useless Member 259 Member For: 21y 15d Gender: Male Posted 03/06/04 10:05 AM Share Posted 03/06/04 10:05 AM Hi I think you should check your intake manifold for water leaks into the cylinder.Alot of these run heater hoses on them.Another posibility is that any water jackets in the manifold may not be sealed by the newgasket properly.Try if you wish Im not a mechanic but a mechanical nut.Just some sugestions....
