Why is it hard to sell a T?

In the process of buying an XR6, looks like I have a new NA for under $38,000.

Lately have been noticing a lot of T's for sale and they are not been sold? Why is this so. Just been offered an immaculate Mercury silver T, Novemeber 2002, 18000kms, towbar and not much else for $35,500!!!!!!!!!!

So I could buy the T for less then the new NA. The T is a manual, seems like the manuals are not moving, am I wrong in suggesting that. Why can people not sell the T's 2ndhand. People scared they have been flogged??

Very curious.

I will test your theory on thursday when my T goes to auction, and I will let you know then. I don't think that what you say is an accurate reflection of the average car on the market.

A mate of mine just got $44k trade-in for a Nov 02 sss sedan with leather, 18s, sunroof, premium sound. Also had about 25ks on it. Traded it on a car of LESSER value too.

I think ive nutted out not so much why the turbos are not selling , but why they have depriciated so dramatically. being the amount of turbo fleet cars on the market at present. it seems that the price the fleet car needs to return to break even ,has drawn the price of the second hand turbo down to what the fleet pricing is . ie. 2003 auto stock $39000. 15000km later sell for $39000. fleet account breaks even . funny but I think that $39000 at present is not getable? where I work at present they have 5 fleet turbos for sale ! just chech out the km's on the cars for sale .a lot around the 15000km mark.

all the best timmy.

I visited the Pickles auction iin Canberra on Saturday 29th May and a manual turbo 09/03 (19858km) reached $36800 and an auto 04/03 29648km reached $36500. I think they did not reach the reserve price but I expect a sale will be agreed. An XR8 went for about the same price. C*m*d*re SS were going for only $26000 (02 models with 40000 + km.

l dont think T's are any better or worse than most other cars when it comes to resale. The trade work on 22% deprectiation on the "on road" price in the first year so a 1 yr old stock T should be around $39k. Extras dont add a whole lot to the price except maybe leather and sunroof which seem most desirable.

Selling cars used is much more difficult than 5 years ago because new car sales are at record levels and the market is flooded with supply.

It has become very difficult to sell a non-prestige car privately for more than $20,000.

With all the media reports on vehicle rebirthing and winding back speedos etc - buyers have become a lot more cautious. In addition, record car sales means that folks with budgets in the high $30's for a T (or any other car) may as well buy brand new for a few $$$'s more.

A T which is sold for $39k privately, does not include stamp duty, usually has the balance of rego, may be due for a major service 45k, have 50% worn tyres etc. Hence the gap between 2nd hand and new at fleet prices is not that great. In addition, GST on a fleet car is also deducted from the sale price for company owned vehicles.

Desirable options may make a 2nd hand car more appealing, as the buyer's emotional attachment are stimulated. e.g. 2nd hand T for $39k with leather, 18" wheels, premium sound, sat nav and sunroof compared to a $45k on road for a base spec T would be a difficult choice for the private buyer.

I have been selling my second hand Falcons for the last 15 years and they are always slow to sell. I never ask top dollar, even though as a minimum my cars have always had factory roofs and are in top condition. I find the options dont add value, just increase the appeal. All I want to do is differentiate mine from the hundreds of other Falcs on the market. I did find though once you get into the low $20k's, the number of buyers increase because you have the younger guys entering the market. I keep mine a minimum of 3 years and generally get out of them OK.
