Just went down to Bob Jane and got my tyres filled with nitrogen apparently it gives better tyre life and helps prevent blowouts, pressure dosn't increase while driving and the tyres stay cooler. Grand total $24 plus free refills. Does anybody know if this realy works. Apparently I now only need to check the pressures every 3 -4 months.

A friend of mine had done his XR6 with this said it improves ride as the pressure doesn't fluctuate with heat/loads. Just the niggly part of not being able to regularly check pressure at the local servo that has stopped me getting em done.

RACQ did a report on it some time ago, found that air in a car tyre when compressed is 90% nitrogen. So you do the maths, 10% for a huge difference, I don't think so.

Agree and add the following.

SAVE YOUR MONEY FELLA'S.

I cant put it in any other words other than IT'S TOTAL RUBBISH.

1. The temperature rise and fall is totally dependant on the tire's ability to dissipate heat.

2. The temperature/pressure expansion coefficients between air and nitrogen at the pressures run in road cars is negligable.

3. Its totally beyond scientific comprehension how they can claim it helps prevent blowouts. Maybe they are breeding a stronger type of nitrogen molecule.

In the end though, it's a personal choice and it definatly wont be harmful.

I think it has come about because airlines have used nitrogen in their tyres for years, and one of the reasons is to maintain a more constant pressure under the extremes of take-off and landing.

However Nitrogen expands and contracts at the same rate as other gases. The advantage of pure nitrogen is that it will not absorb water like normal air does. It is the water in the air that causes the major pressure problem when it expands.

Your car is not going to cruise at -50c for 10 hours straight and then subject the tyres to a sudden, extreme force like landing a plane does.

I've often wondered if it's worth doing. Macka, hmmm good points. Oh well, just good old fashioned air will do. It gives me an excuse to down the road every now and then, doesn't it.
