Transmission or Driveline Noise

I've found a strange noise coming from my XR6T's auto transmission or driveline.

In my cul-de-sac, as I'm about to reverse up the slight incline on my driveway, I will drive to a (complete) stop, then put her into reverse. I'll even wait that second or so for the thing to actually engage reverse... and then gently accelerate up the driveway.

That's when it happens: clink-clink...clink...clink...clink.. and then nothing. For about the first 3 metres of reversing. It sounds like someone lightly hitting two shifter spanners together.

It sounds transmission / driveline related... not ABS or anything else but I could be wrong.

Any ideas?

I've had that problem since day one mate.

Now its bad enough that it takes about 10 seconds to engage in reverse unless I blip the throttle and get thrown forward.

I'm getting a new slusher put in next week, will let you know how I go.

hate to tell you Scootre, it does sound like shunt.

Mine makes from a click to a small bang going into reverse.

Try to go foward then backwards then forwards on a flat road and listen to the clunk. also try to change down gears and pump the throttle.

I hate to say it mate, but welcome to the worst option Ford has.

The clunk with no fix. Almost as bad as a pub with no beer.

Well... you've got me. To this day I've thought the famous driveline shunt to be the bad clunk. I don't get a bad clunk. Never have.

I've not heard anyone describe their shunt as anything like the high clink-clink I get. Bloody hell. :spoton:

Oh well... another thing for them to do during the 10k oil change I suppose.

Thanks for the replies chaps.

Sorry Cro - I've just re-read your post.

Can you explain to me why it takes so long to engage reverse on your / my car? Now you mention it, mine used to take a split sec to engage. Now it's well over a second. What causes this? What's the slusher?

So the fix isn't as simple as a driveshaft or linkage change I take it? It's transmission related?

Sorry guys... I'm more at home with computers, cameras and industrial printers. :spoton:

hey, mine does the exact same thing, but only when I select reverse and take off , its goes, CLINK once, sumtimes rarely twice, but some of time NEVER!

I just thought it was selecting reverse really late or sumthin, havent thought much of it! Never makes any loud bangs!!
