DIFF CLUNK - Combined Approach

I note the exact same problems with my XR plus several others. Returned the questionairre that I received from Ford after 12 months ownership - my responses were negative, Ford's response to me.....None.

After dealing with 2 dealerships on several occasions and advising of driveline issues (amonst others), I have come to a dead-end. The last dealer's service advisor stated that he knew of the problem, and then two or three sentences later asked "what time would you like to pick-up your vehicle this afternoon". They just weren't interested.

Because I have made a significant outlay to purchase this vehicle, I will make the most of what I have got and rectify/repair the faults when I have the time and cash and/or enthusiasm. Even the boot gets full of water when it rains!!!!.

My Motto: Live with what you've got and don't mount the Donkey unless you expect to be taken for a ride!

Hello fellow XR6T owners,

My first post since owning my XR purchased new in Apr04.

My vehicle has just had its 4th (yes 4th) diff fitted in the last 2 months to try and remove driveline vibration. Result: Failure again.

My vehicle had gear whine in the diff from day one between speed range 90 - 98 km/h. At the 3000 service, the diff was replaced and since then the vehicle has been mostly undrivable.

At this stage I cannot tell the whole story as I am dealing directly with Ford Australia to see what happens next. The issue is that nobody can balance the driveline of the vehicle since the first time the tailshaft was disconnected some months ago.

How I dream of having a drivable vehicle with only a whine and not a car that literally wants to throw a tailshaft above 75km/h. The vehicle has had two tailshafts, 4 diffs (including 2 handbuilts), and countless attempts at balancing.

You can literally drive down the highway in one direction with little or no vibration and then do a U turn and drive home and the vehicle wants to vibrate itself apart.

I will keep this forum informed as the saga continues.

AAiek

Ps. One thing I was told was that there will be a national recall notice on all XR6T and XR8 vehicles to replace diffs in Nov04.

AAiek,

All I can say is SHAME FORD SHAME

I thought my clunking was bad, if Ford put 4 diffs in my car I would give them the car, demand a loaner and tell them not to return it unless they gave me a full refund or they guarantee they have fixed it or your money back.

I cannot understand how they can get it so wrong. It is either the dealers mechanics have a severe case of NFI when it comes to fixing the driveline or they are lying to you and say they have replaced them, but really they have not.

I guess you are lucky that Ford has done something to try to fix the problem....Ford just tell me its normal and to F... off. :spoton:

Sorry to hear about the vibration..........but did you ever get a diff that:-

a) didnt clunk ?

and/or

b) didn't whine ?

ZapXR6T,

You must have ESP. The dealer has had my vehicle in the workshop for close to 3 weeks. I will not accept it back until it drives like it is supposed to. They have given me a 'loaner'.

I have started a history on the vehicle with Ford Australia and now deal through them and the dealer, together. Everything done to the vehicle is documented and tracked. They are well aware of where this will lead to if the vehicle can not be fixed.

I must say that the dealer is going out of their way to rectify the problem, and even though the issue is not resolved yet, I am confident that it will be in the near future.

teebone,

It has been three weeks since I drove my car, and it is hard to remember which diff was in the car at different times.

First diff was noisy between 90-98 km/h with no clunk. 2nd diff clunked but with the vibration in the car that was the least of my worries. Apparently the pinion end thrust in diff 2 was .5mm which was .45mm above the specs. Diff 3 - no clunk but ooooohhh the vibration (and a slight whine)!! Diff 4 - I never drove the car with this diff.

JB, xr6 typhoon, jetute,

You guys may be right; only time will tell. The only suggestion one could make is to document everything. That means with Ford Australia as well as the delaer. If the dealer is not playing the game, demand some direction from the parent company on which spefic dealer to take the vehicle to.

Demand a plan of action, with answers to 'what if it is not fixed by ........ etc'. Ask direct questions such as 'at what point do Ford accept that the vehicle cannot be fixed, AND THEN WHAT?' If the parent company is prompted to state milestones that must be followed by dealerships, then if they are not followed or can't be followed then surely the owner must have some comeback. If this is documented, then it could make very interesting reading for outside agencies.

I'm sure everyone is already doing something along these lines, so I'm probably telling people to suck eggs but good luck.

I will update the progress as it occurs. Good luck

Hello again,

Just to advise that after three weeks in the workshop I picked up my XR6T on Friday. All vibrations removed and no diff clunk. The diff fitted to the car has a pinion end thrust of .07mm (tolerance .05mm acceptable). Parts replaced were diff centre, half shafts, tailshaft, one rim and rear end cradle.

The vehicle drives smoothly at all speeds. There is a slight gear whine between 90 - 100 km/h. This will be resolved later in the year with a new diff centre.
