DIFF CLUNK - Combined Approach

TwinXRS - had same positive response from my dealer at 3000km courtesy service but having corresponded with JB and others who have greater experience than most on this issue I instructed them to keep the paperwork in the standby mode and not to place the order for a replacement until I specifically ask. I will live with the whine for the moment as I share your exact concerns - the replacment could be even worse.

Interestingly the dealer new nothing of alternative approaches to supply as per JBs long awaited Grade 10 diff other than the online method.

Will Series II bring a fix? One would think so with such a large backorder of replacements in the system. :makedeal:

Was told three months wait on my diff, hopefully they have gone back to the drawing board. If this is the case I would rather wait six months for it to be fixed properly.

When I made the service booking, I mentioned the whine

When I picked up the car in the afternoon, I was told that a replacement diff had been ordered - ETA is 1 week.

I'm now waiting for a phone call...

(Of course now I have the worry that the replacement diff will be worse than the current one - I have NO "clunk" at the moment, and when they swap the diff there's a reasonable chance that I'll end up with an out of balance tailshaft. :w00t2: )

Time will tell !

Mate I was told the same thing , now into week 16 WTF. Not hassling them as per your stated reason.Too Clunk or not to clunk ???What a choice. :nono:

Do not and I repeat do not let them touch it without all the proper balancing equipment for the " entire drive train " or it will almost certainly end in tears.

Think Fordtech mentioned this many moons ago ??? and the requisite equipment is in short supply !!

Sooooory :aaggl:

I would suggest you will be waiting much longer than 1 week mate, I waited 6 weeks for my first diff, and am up to 7 weeks so far for my second, with at least another 3 weeks from here. Apparently there is up to 1000 diffs on backorder.

Yeah, when I was told "1 week", my reply was "more like 2 months" and then told them about the backlog - they claimed that it was news to them ! :kissmy:

My plan is to tell them to hold on to my old diff for a day while I check the new diff for lash etc.

Do not and I repeat do not let them touch it without all the proper balancing equipment for the " entire drive train " or it will almost certainly end in tears.

I was planning on a followup call today - this will be part of the conversation...

After my experience with a replacement diff in my series 1 AU XR6 VCT - that only lasted 6 months ! - I am well aware of just how bad a Ford replacement diff can be... <_<

seems more people are getting new diffs for the whine then for the clunk?? would this be the case??

That would be true because Ford accept the whine as being not normal, but the clunk is. :spoton:

Not sure how that would make sense but I guess it's true. The dealers are ordering diffs over the phone to replace the whine before they even test drive the car.

I'm not complaining as at least they are attempting to fix my problem, but I do honestly feel bad knowing what you guys are going through with the shunt. If you had to choose between which of the two defects you had to put up with then it would be the whine any day as far as I am concerned.

I am now sure the problem is NOT the diff. I am almost certain that the problem is in the gearbox. I have tried different things and I find that in 90% of gear changes the car will clink.

My theory is that there is very little sound proofing under the back seat but there is a fair amount around the gearbox.

What I would like to know is who has had the clunk fixed in their car and how was it fixed ?

I do not want to have ford waste my time by having the diff replaced if this does not fix the problem.

Thoughts......
