Exhaust Disappointment

Hi All,

while I was in Sydney today I dropped in to Hi-Tech Darlinghurst and spoke to Lambros about the XR6T system. From looking at systems on other cars (WRX plus 15kw ATW, 200SX plus 18kw ATW) I was hoping for some big things from a 3' system on a BA.

Well I am a fair bit disappointed to say the least! I saw a dyno readout claiming 192kw ATW. Great, you say. The sad thing was that in comparison on this day at C & V the std XR6T ran about 186kw ATW. That means roughly a measly 6kw gain, with just the exhaust. I was told that the only thing done to this car was the exhaust, no intake change etc.

The power curves are VERY similar and the Hi-Tech system only seems to improve over the std system past about 140k's in 4th gear. I am not sure what rpm this equates to.

For the money spent (@$2k) I think I will go with a mild steel system and see the same sort of results for about $700. What are other ppl's thoughts?

Hi Tech Mufflers did the exhaust in my car, i truly notice the gain more now then before. Ill let you know the dyno results from our dyno day would be very interesting to see. Strange though that they told me roughly 271 or so Flywheel KW.

Do you think the boost was still restricted, thus limiting the potential improvements in flow from the new system? After all, the car will only make as much power at the wheels as the ECU lets it...

Perhaps some more detailed dyno charts can be produced by someone, including a boost reading over the same rpm range...

Hey CJF077,

I told them I knew of your car etc thru the site. Do you still have your std system so a real world comparo can be taken? 271 fw seems a bit :alien: l to me. Call me sceptical. I don't think that this is quite right, but I will reserve my full judgement for a proper dyno report. All Lambros kept repeating was 192 192 192 kw and like I said, when compared to the std system, it sucked IMHO.

Be careful guys, DYNOs can be soul-destroying.....mechanics always tell us that a pipe adds 15kw, a chip adds close to 20kw, a pod air filter adds 5-10kw....but then when you put them on and ruyn the dyno, you'll see that it ain't the case. You'll see improvements, but not like the figures that add up.

We dynoed a std xr6t on saturday and had a result of 179rwkw's. Now when I posted that number I had another forum member concur with that reading on another xr6t dyno result that he had seen. Within a couple kw's.

We also dynoed a std xr8 and had a result of 191rwkw's. This car had only 300km on the clock.

Yes still got the standard exhaust at home. But I think what we will do on a dyno day is dyno a standard xr6t and then put mine on and find out for real. This will at least be some sort of judgement. I really want to find out for myself as well!

A dyno is as good as the person who performs it amd the equipment they use. I have seen dyno's with WRXs that just don't add up either. Dyno's have a ramp up rate that can be adjusted to play with figures. There are many variables and that's why I asked CJF077 if he still had his original system. Things I have seen mane a difference are tyre choice, wheel diameter, air temp etc. It is only good checking your car against itself. CJF077, your car might make 192kw ATW at 8am with 18's, while someone elses car with a hi-tech system might make 182kw ATW cos it was done at 2pm and they were running 17's with a different tyre choice. Dynoing a car at sea level will create more power than doing it at the top of Mt Kosiosko too...

I guess I was expecting more than 6kw for the $, that's all...

Matchew, can you tell us the name of the company and the brand of the dyno used? Also, was this early in the day? What city?
