If you're not going to buy a real Porsche don't bother - anything but a 911 doesn't rate in my eyes, but give me one of those and I'll quite possibly never buy another car!

Its quite obvious from some of the comments here that a few guys are highly swayed by what Clarkson tells them to think, re: passion in cars. What a wank. I'm an engineer, and I'll take the better engineered car over the unreliable Italian. However, of recent times Ferrari has produced far better engineered cars than earlier (letting the F1 side of things come through) and lambos are basically audis anyway..

Heck, top gear talks about the passion in Alfas! Hmmm - Alfa or Porsche, what a toughie :blink:

Hey Bunna what makes you think passion and cars is a wank? If there was no passion Volvos would rule the roads. There would be no cars clubs with people that spend hours and thousands of dollars to do up and cruise with like minded people in something as bad as a Suzuki Mightyboy or Leyland P76. Psssion is a massive part of motoring and car enthusiest lives. For my mind Porsche are massively engineered, who else could get a rear engined car to handle so well, why have they stuck with rear engined vehicles, I can tell you why passion ther can be no other reason.

Taking away from the original point of this thread Porsche have and still do make fantastic cars, but on a whole car enthusiest dont rate them anymore, there are just to many great cars out there, that make you smile as you drive them. Talk sh*t about them with like wise motoring enthusiests, not debate the laws of physics and chat about mathematical formulas, like you engineers do.

Please dont take offence as without you bloody boring engineers, we would still be driving around in VW,s, god help us.

Sorry, but I had a low opinion of Porche well before Clarkson mentioned it.

Put a 911 next to an F430 or a Lambo and the 911 barely rates a 2nd look in my book.

I have to agree with Scotty, the majority of the car market is about passion. The purchase of a car nearly always has an emotional aspect involved, even for those who just buy a car as a clynical transportation device.

You only have to look at Holden's market sucess in Australia, pretty much down to sucessful emotion based marketing.

I'm definitely a car nut, and have a genuine passion for all things car - I spent most of my uni degree reading about and mucking around in/with cars instead of studying. Heck, now I work for Ford :spoton:

My point about passion was regarding the reason Italian cars are pumped up over the Germans - the perceived passion that comes with the likes of Ferrari, Maserati, etc, as opposed to the perceived lack of passion from Porsche, BMW, and Mercedes. I meant that using that as a reason to rank the Italians as superior is a wank - as Clarkson and co in fact do on Top Gear (which is a show I thoroughly enjoy - I'm downloading the current episode right now!). The latest example of the bias shown was the review of the 997 GT2, anyone who has seen it would know what I mean.

Errm - that'll be physicists and mathematicians, engineers generally do stuff (problem solve) based on sound (or otherwise) background knowledge. Oh, and drink beer :blush:

I completely agree with Clarkson on this one. Ever since I was a kid with my Matchbox cars, I always thought my 911 was no match for my 308GTB.

And yes, I have been fortunate enough ti drive a 911 (around 12 years ago admidedly). I was very impressed with the handling, but utterly underwhealmed by the performance :verysad: .

Perceived passion or not, it works for them. The Germans (and Japanese) have long enginered their cars for function rather than form. The Italians design their cars for form as well as function. On the other side of the equation, the Germans have a reputation for extremely high quality, and cars that perform their designated purpose with unrivaled precision.

Porche, BMW and Merc traditionally employ fairly plain styling. The Italians are known for their sleek, 'out there' designs.

Another aspect is exclusivity. The Germans build several versions of similar themes making their cars fairly common. By comparison, on the rare occation that a F430 or Lambo rumbes by it commands respect and attention like nothing else on the road.

Like it or not, perceived or not, you can't ignore the evidence.
