I'm prepared to pay the extra to avoid the stress of issues that are continually detracting from the enjoyment of my T3. I'm not even confident taking it on a long trip now.

Exactly. Same reason I got rid of mine. I would not hesitate at a BMW again, Especially a M series they are just a beautifully engineered car.

Close to 10,000k's now on the clock and all I have done is put fuel in it and wash it. Funnily enough I still get alot of comments from people on the X5, don't know why considering they are very common... :spoton:

I have always liked BMWs, great cars - nice build quality, go well etc, but....

I thought seriosuly about a second hand 540 v8 - (cant afford the M5) - looks nice, goes well, but I hate to say it - they are in my opinion a bit of an old mans car inside and out - and the same goes for most of the BMWs, particularly the 5 and 7 series cars.

This blandness is typical German - and I guess means they will last longer designwise (ie not outdating) - but they just dont seem to have the x factor that I like. This is shown in the interior shot the most - just is blah - nothing wrong with it, all smart and functional - just doesnt do anything for me - especially for a $150,000 car. (Sorry - not trying to put your car down)

Even though the XR6T Fords seem to have issues with self destructing sometimes, and arnt as technically good as the BMW - I think that they have loads more character, and suit me better than the BMWs.

nice cars BMW and even nicer to see something else instead of a 318i ...

not my thing though couldnt justify the price but if money can cover then go for it I guess

All cars lose value, if you start at 100k where does that leave you in a couple of years, a T may go from 45k to 30k price in 3 years but I saw a Range Rover go from 110 to 50 in 2 years ....

Accessible power to the people in my opinion.

Read my last line in my signature, my dads boss sold his Porshe the next day and bought a Lambo diablo HE WAS SO PI$$ED after the run, imaging the face of an architect with a property portfolio worth a couple of million...

He wanted a re-run ... :spoton:

Are resale any good on those BMWs ?

Don't know if I agree about the depreciation on the T's. I think most would agree they are pretty poor. I dropped $18k in 2 years, and the avg seems to be around $10k in the first year, but as indicated that's what you get with new cars.

I think it's the same with whatever you buy, you will always loose money on a vehicle so it's about making it work for you in the best possible financial way.

There are different situations where people do come out better on a vehicle but these situations would only be in the top 15 odd %. You mentioned Range Rovers, anyone who knows that brand of car well, knows you will do your balls on it if you buy one new, same with a Jag. Where as a porsche your money will be reasonably secure based on care of the car and K's.

My situation now with the X5 is that no more Diesels are coming into the country until march 06 when the 06 update arrives. They have pretty much run out of stock of the 05's after their recent advertising campaign (Being imported cars they are only allocated so many per year under a quota system).

The benefit for me is that with fuel prices and lack of product my car is in high demand. The dealer offerred to buy it back from me for $3k more than what I paid for it. They had a buyer who had obviously more money than sense.

What I am getting at is if you choose right hopefully you will do ok. I will only find out as the years tick by on my car, but I am hoping with the rave reviews the X5 has always received, combined with the ongoing demand for the car since it's release in 2000, and the fact I bought a diesel, (45% of X5 sales they only budgeted 15%) will mean I cover myself when it comes to resale in 5 years. If I end up better off than the payout then I will be one of the minority who have been lucky.

Cheers

Dallas,

How is the ownership experience going 18 months on? l see that you can pick up a 2002 model now for around 100k or a tad over. Its a tempting alternative to a new GT-P.

How expensive is the maintenance on your car? Most parts on the M5 are not interchangeable with other models so you probably have to buy genuine which must be expensive? l can imagine what the brakes would cost to maintain for starters  :tease:

Interested to hear you thoughts.

Cheers Simon

Dallas, you around? :tease:
