Well almost a week in the new M5. Well how does it compare to the mighty T?

Firstly, let me say that I enjoyed every K in the T. It was great fun.

Background

2 years ago when I sold my last 5 series BMW, I made an of the cuff remark to a mate of mine that worked at BMW. “If you every get a silver M5 ring me”

Last Friday the phone rang whilst we on holidays in Melbourne. “Your car is here”

I said what car? Anyway to cut to the chase. I went down to the BMW dealer on Monday. Saw the car and put a deposit on it as I fell in love with it!

The deal

My t was leased only 15 months ago and the payment was about 44k. Whole sale they were offered 35K. So we were 10K away on the trade.

Anyway we came to deal where they paid out the lease, I still got more off the asking price and the deal was done.

The Service

Nothing was too much trouble for them. They organized new plates for the T and returned my personalized plates at delivery. The car was ready at the appointed time, complete with the wheels being polished, full tank of juice, BMW M key ring, and Formula 1 umbrella as gifts.

It came with 2 years warranty and roadside assist.

No before you say “so it should given its cost” then think again. How much did these nice touches really cost them?

BTW today II received a letter from BMW thanking me for my purchase signed by the MD. Not bad!

The driving

How does it go? 13.2 0-100 for a start. It’s off line acceleration is much better than the T. Mid range it’s almost feels the same but after about 120 its gone into the distance!

Its mid corner grip would have to be 50% better than the T. the T can feel nervous when going fast. In the M5 you can talk on the inbuilt phone at the same time.

The 18x 9’s on the back give fantastic grip. I think the T could do with bigger wheels and tyres as I am now sure it may handle better.

The M5 has many more gadgets than the T but shares many of the same styling cues. It’s obvious that Ford have copied Audi and BMW with some ergonomic features.

Is it good value?

The T is fantastic value when compared. You can buy 3 T’s for the cost of an M5.

The T has its own appeal and in my books is a fantastic choice. It does not stack up in the suspension or handling to the M5 but it could with work on it.

Anyway that’s my humble comparison. The service from BMW was fantastic as usual, they mad no bad comments about the trade in and it has all worked out.

What did I not like about the T?

Well it’s a pity it’s a ford sometimes. Ford need to work on their service to customers or they will loose people like me. I really would have kept the car, if I didn’t have persistent niggly issues. It matters not if it’s a 50k car or $150k car.

My wife’s 20K Mazda 2 has NO issues and they treat her like it’s a 100K car. Would we buy another Mazda? Yes.

Its funny as Ford owns Mazda. I wonder if they have ever called in for a chat?

Regards

Dallas

Congrats

A love the M5's

They are a real mans car...probably the ultimate all purpose car in my books.

Yes, that it the big difference with European and Japanese car salesmen. They treat the buyer with a bit more service and they appreciate the custom.

Australian dealers (Ford and Holden) could learn a lot about service. They seem to think they are doing you a favour by selling you one of their cars.

M5, awesome car dallas. Even a Fordaholic like me drools over 1.

I'm certain that they hang on like the proverbial to a blanket, especially with those 18x9's on the rear & I'll bet that 6 speeder is quite sensational.

We all know why they treat you like God, cause you've purchased a car they can only dream of (bit like me, wouldn't like to adopt a 35 yo 6'6 son hey big guy.)

But I can't drag Aussie manufactures over the coals as they don't follow suit to the big Euro boys. H____n & Ford design, build & sell cars for the mass market in reach of most Aussie's pockets.

This is done on a budget & for my money when I buy a car I don't want flash keyring, umbrella, coffee or tickets to Les Miserables, I want bang for my buck.

All this said, M series BMW's are constrant drool factor for me & I'm in awe of your desire & ability to obtain one, but I'm also confident that we won't lose you to www.baverianmotorworksMfive.com

Congratulations Dallas

Sounds like it needs a tune up.

Now if it were 0-400m time that would be a different story...

A few friends have M3's and M5's very nice cars indeed, thanks for the review, from a diferent perspective than a hand-on-knob journo from M or W mag.
