Yay - the first pic of Sat Nav working!! Thanks Djelibeybi

I'd like to see some pics of it working showing road level detail, where you can see the individual streets, and perhaps there's arrows showing you to turn left, right and so on. Your help is appreciated!

You can zoom in to 50m scale and out to around 10km or so. It'll be a little difficult to show the various navigational tools it uses because they're only displayed while the car is in motion. So I'd have to get someone in the passenger seat trying to take pictures while I'm driving!

There are a few different navigational display modes. The one I like best displays upcoming intersections and clearly marks the direction in which you should travel. Alternatively, you can have an upcoming turn list (with distance count-downs) and there's a third one I haven't tried yet. :)

I'm not sure what you mean about road level detail, though. Depending on what scale you use, you can see more/less road information. You can also configure the system to display up to 5 different Points of Interest (POI) icons. For example, I've configured mine to show me petrol stations, parking lots/garages, hospitals and shopping malls. You can see those icons in my picture above (the Red Cross, the P sign and the little petrol pump).

can DVD sat nav be fitted at a dealer after purchase?

No. The Satellite Navigation requires major modification to the Premium Sound ICC to handle the incoming RGB display signal from the unit the boot and it also needs the infrared receiver for the satellite navigation remote control. While I'm sure it'd be possible to do this after delivery, its probably not something Ford would like their service agents attempting to do! :)

However, you can get aftermarket navigation systems from VDO Dayton and other manufacturers. They start at around $2,500 or so, I believe. You can also get combined DVD players/navigation units, but those are obviously more expensive.

The only gripe I have is the womans voice who directs you is not loud enough when driving at high speeds. Apart from that it is well worth the $s if you are doing a lot of kilometres

That was the only problem I had between choosing it or a dvd player. I am slightly hearing impaired so I couldn't hear it as well as some, so I opted for the DVD player. But it is good to see that they are going to do something about

Hey Djelibeybi, thanks heaps for all the info. About the 'road level detail' I just meant, I'd like to see some pics of the Sat Nav at the level that shows individual roads. I guess that's at the same level where you see the arrows etc showing which way to turn. The pic you posted earlier seemed like a 'higher'/'zoomed out' level with less detail, showing only the major roads. You answered all my queries on that stuff, and the news about POI's is a handy feature. If it's not too much trouble, and you're able to avoid an accident :) it'd be good to see it working - it's a lot easier to get info from this group than some Ford dealers!!

Thanks dude!

I'll see if I can explain it -- you can scale down to about 50m resolution (which shows all the roads in the database). However, when navigation is active, the screen splits -- one side is the map in the picture, the other side displays navigation assistance, either as a bigger view of the intersection showing the direction of travel, or a series of upcoming turns and their distance.

I'll try and get some pics taken soon, but real life is interfering with this stuff, so it may be a while.

I am expecting delivery of my XR6T in the next week and was reading some of the earlier text on the Sat Nav and DVD entertainment systems. And if I understood correctly the Factory DVD Sat Nav and Factory DVD rear entertainment system share the same disc slot, can someone tell me if this is correct?

Nope, they're two separate systems. The DVD Satellite Navigation drive sits in the boot, the DVD Entertainment Unit sits on the roof of the car above the gap between the two front seats. You can run both at the same time, so they would have to have different drives. I'd imagine the Entertainment Unit's drive is in the unit itself.

Does anyone know or think it would be possible to run an aftermarket sat nav or DVD player into the existing premium sound screen? The Ford system uses this screen, and apparentlly the DVD for it is in the boot. If this is the case then I suppose the back of the screen would have to have some kind of video input. Would love to hear from anyone who has seen the screen on its own, or even just the back of the screen. The Ford sat nav option seemed pretty expensive to me, however I would pay for an aftermarket one (assuming it's cheaper) if I knew it was possible.
