Standard XR6T brakes

I got the premium brakes on my XR6T.

The way I see it, even if they only improve stopping by say 5%, they only have to save you in one emergency, and they have pretty well paid for themselves. Paid, in money, time & anguish, that is.

I got DBA4000 slotted. Awesome rotors, just wish they were bigger to dissapate more heat.

Once they heat up a fair bit you can feel the pads rubbing against the slots.

You also need to get the right pad setup and brake fluid to get the full effect. I think from memory the 4000 series can handle 750c degrees.

Bendix Ultimates can only take 450c (I've killed these pads before)

Ferodo Formula can handle 650c.

I'm using the Ferodo's and I can't complain.

Next brake mod is some braided lines and DOT6 fluid.

G'day cro, that sounds like a great set up, just what I've been looking for how much did it cost installed? cheers badger

Mine cost me a lot more cause I had to buy from a Ford dealer to keep it under my lease. So they bought parts from Repco, and put their markup on there.

Cost me about $1000 for front rotors, and pads all round all fitted.

Take a couple of hundred off if you buy yourself.

Guys, I have an Oct 03 build with standar brakes and have 20,000 km on it with zero brake problems (mainly highway driving). How can I tell whether my car has the new or old style of brakes. Are they visibly different.... is the rotor a different thickness???

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

10/03 should be revised caliper design.

My car was deliverd 29 Oct 03 which makes it a 10/03 build. Can I assume that all 10/03 builds have the new design brakes. Reading previous posts, the new design brakes have been accused of requiring both feet on the wide pedal to make the car stop. My brakes work fine with a light touch so I suspect I have the earlier design.

How can I confirm this? The reason I would like to know is that if I have the earlier brake configuration, I would like to change the pads now to something that is not going to screw the rotors.

I personally find that for city driving and highway driving the standards are find for me. But as mentioned before - when u do 'spirited' driving - you can feel the brake pedal not stopping the car more and more as you have a bit of fun. :ermm:

Standard brakes are working A-Ok @ the 1,000km mark  Yet to run up the back of someone...

On a serious note, the demo turbo I had for a weekend prior to buying my T had the premium brakes installed and the first thing I noticed when I took delivery of the new car was the difference between the two types.

The premiums were (are) not cheap, and in hindsight, should I have spent the extra cash on the better brakes? Probably not. I look nothing like Marcus Ambrose and some would say he is a better driver than me (I'll prove them wrong one day), so am happy with the standard stoppers.

Any-who, my thoughts and opinion.
