Can anyone advice how good the standard brakes are and should I upgrade and pay the extra $3K?

thanks people

Hey dutchie,

I've just changed pads after 30,000k's with my standards to the QFM pads & gave them a fair workout last weekend. The originals would have gone to lunch but the QFM's stayed strong right through.

So I'd say if your going to do serious track work I'd get some huge aftermarket jobbies, otherwise I'd just go standard & fit QFM's to the front.

I personally wouldn't bother unless you're gonna race it, work it or just drive it bloody hard all the time.

The standard brakes were apparently fixed to stop shudder from Oct 03 builds and onwards, so far haven't had any problems with the standard brakes in my Oct 03 build.

Standard brakes for mine. They do warm up pretty quick when pushed but for daily driving they're quite good. And no shudder :k24t: touch wood, Nov. '03 build.

Nov 03 build. Standard brakes. 3600km. Its a normal every day driver for me and I have no complaints with the brakes at all. I had one drive down a windy twisty mountain on a recent trip with 4 ppl in the car and the brakes were fine that day too.

One word can describe the standard brakes, and it can be repeated a million times.

CRAP CRAP CRAP CRAP CRAP.

If they don't shudder they fade, if they don't fade they shudder, sometimes they do both.

If you were pressed for cash, upgrade to a decent set of rotors DBA longlife, 4000 or 5000 series, and some decent pads. Ferodo Formula's are awesome.

But if I had the choice again, I'd get the premo's..

Hi Cro

How do you find the DBA rotors and which ones are you using? I have noticed that they now have the 4000 with sloted and cross drilled.

Cheers

For everyday driving, the standard brakes are fine although they feel spongy (mines a Jan '04) build.

They are also fine for the occasional hard stop.

However, for spirited driving (ie Reefton Spur which has 200+ 1st and 2nd gear corners in 20km), they are crap !!! Excessive fade after only 20 corners. (My Rex never had problems at all).

I got DBA4000 slotted. Awesome rotors, just wish they were bigger to dissapate more heat.

Once they heat up a fair bit you can feel the pads rubbing against the slots.

You also need to get the right pad setup and brake fluid to get the full effect. I think from memory the 4000 series can handle 750c degrees.

Bendix Ultimates can only take 450c (I've killed these pads before)

Ferodo Formula can handle 650c.

I'm using the Ferodo's and I can't complain.

Next brake mod is some braided lines and DOT6 fluid.
