Study finds no speed limits = lower fatalities

This is interesting:

http://www.hwysafety.com/hwy_montana_2001.htm

It's a study of the imposing and then removal of speed limits and their effects on the road death rates. They've found that an open road (no limits) gives way to a lower fatality rate.

It's lengthy. If you don't want to read it all... the juicy bits are in the coloured tables half way down.

I've often wondered what the fatality rate was like in the Northern Territory what with their open roads. NSW and presumably other states had open roads. For NSW, limits came in to force in the mid-late 70s as I recall. I don;t believe we have a lot of roads in NSW that would support no limits (let alone the drivers).

What are the speed limit-less roads like in the NT? Do they compare well with those wide, good cambered Autobahn's?

There weren't any NT road fatalities this easter, and the roads arent bad but the newcastle/sydney freeway is heaps better, but you have to keep in mind the amount of traffic a road sees also.

yeah I haven't driven on the nt roads but they should be fairly ok if there is no speed limit

The fatalities in the NT and on the autobahns in Germany are very high per capita.

However, even though the fatalities are higher per capita than in oter States, the actual number of fatalities are lower because of the density of traffic volume.

Therefore the high number of fatalities on the autobahn can be attributed to the amount of foreigners that travel (and die) on the autobahn who are not experienced in high speed transit.

You are more likely to have a fatal collision on NT roads than in other States and this is because of the lack of experience in travelling at high speed, the exposure of objects such as animals that cross into a vehicles path and lack of knowledge on how to safely overtake other vehicles when you vision is reduced by clouds of dust from other vehicles.

Trouble with those studies is that I can find a couple that would find the contrary. Studies are VERY heavily influenced by who's paying for them, and what they are looking to prove

that's only because you're likely to run over someone sleeping on it or staggering across it.

And why have they got no experience or exposure??????????

Because the 'nanny mentality' of our elected State Politicians not allowing people to traverse some of our good quality freeways at realistic speeds and getting the experience.....

All they see is an opportunity to..........'raise revenue'.

And then.....prove they are the opportunistic, vote whoring mongrels they are by hiding behind the 'Safety' banner, and then deluding themselves by thinking we, the voting public are going to be naive enough to swallow this sh!t!!!

Redhawk

I agree......

Now don't allow this thread to degenerate into a 'cop bashing' exercise because at the end of the day Police still use discretion........whereas Speed cameras don't.
