rods Difference Between All Rods from BA to FG and beyond - XR6
Etax posted a topic in Engine Workshop
Hello fellas and gals. Ok simple topic, I am new here and like many others I’m sure (and probably has been answered but can’t find a link anywhere through google). I am wondering on what rods are for each generation. Specifically what rod numbers are in each turbo and NA variants of the Barra from BA to FG. There are multiple comments saying X has this rod but cannot confirm what Y has had originally or simply to upgrade. in my case I’m only looking for say FG has the xx number rod in them. (I’ve heard multiple things from the FG NA has the original BA-BF turbo rods, or no they are lesser then them). I’m putting this together to help newcomers into understanding the engine and what it can handle etc (so not just rods). However since this is rods I’m only asking for support in getting to the bottom of each generations rod design. basically wanting the layout to be something similar to this —> BA N/A - 1Rxxxx rod - 2002-2005 BA T - xxx This will not only give me insight but will definitely help others know what they can, can’t and should do with their motor (in my case pro charge an G6 N/A w/T56). It also means this can be shared around as I believe this to be the greatest simple motor designed, just very hard to search for specific info on it.- 2 replies

Hey guys, I have have bought a BF gas + turbo motor a while ago, and the seller claimed that it has performance valve springs (Crows Cams) and some other goodies in it. It also came with a turbo exhaust manifold, turbo, external wastegate, intake plenum, etc. so seemed legit and I didn't check what's inside. Now I have finally opened the valve cover and did not find the promissed plazmaman head studs 😱, so I suspect valve springs may also be stock... 😱 Could you please suggest a way to identify if my springs are stock or indeed performance...?

Hey lads I’m planning on building my first Barra in the near future and wanted to get a rough idea what work has to be done to the motor. I know I need to change all my rods, pistons, bearings, block and head machined ect... 1. I have read that people are running 1200+hp on a fg turbo crank that's been heat-treat and got me thinking if a fg crank would go straight into a ba-bf? Probably a stupid question but I have read there’s a couple differences between the ba-bf and fg. Only reason I ask is cause I can get a hold of a good fg F6 crank and I’m just planning on buying a cheap n/a ba-bf motor to build. 2. I’m looking to get around 7-800 on 98 for the street and around the 1000-1200hp on E85 so would I have to get the head ported and if so would it be cheaper and better to just exchange the head for a ported one? 3. I have been looking at the spool rebuild kit with custom CP forged pistons and spool drag pro I beam rods and going to run 14mm head studs. I’m a bit confused with all the different options like the all the oversized bearings. is it better to have all the bigger bearings? cause I’ve never built a high hp engine like this, I’ve only ever rebuilt diesels (trucks) and a couple old v8s with my old man when I was a kid. And with all the piston options I got taught by my old man the higher comp ratio in a N/A the more power and lower comp in boosted applications the more power but with technology nowadays it’s completely different from what I got taught. I know all these questions I’ve asked are simple and stupid questions but as I said I’ve never rebuilt a motor to give it more power. If yous could help me out with this stuff it would be great, I know I’m more than capable on putting it back together and for it to run like brand new, it’s just all this other sh*t just got me a bit stumped 😂😂 cheers boys 👍🏽

Alright guys, before you get straight to judging I have done this kinda of thing before but never on an XR6. So the plan is: Start with a stock XR6, get straight in with an engine rebuilt (forged everything, the works). Chuck the turbos on (obviously with slightly more care than "chuck"). With the extra power it would be making brake, clutch, intercooler, suspension and transmission (maybe?) upgrades are a must. What I want to get from you guys is both you're opinion on this plan (plus anything I've left out [minor things are just expected]) and opinions/advice on components within this plan (parts, any extra work needed). Plus anything from anyone who has twin turbo'd an XR6 before would be much appreciated.
