Ok, im still stuck between a rock and a hard place. Went to ford today, they listened and said it could be fixed. They will take it out and send it to someone. Spoke to the local mechanic, and he wants it back, sounds like he had an idea he wants to try. I've got still no idea on what it could be, I have got some different psi tunes for it, but the thing does it even with stock tune, unfortunately im starting to come to terms with it being in the gearset. In other words, gonna hurt the pocket. I'll try get an audio file up so you can hear it. Im telling ya, strangest noise ive heard, and for alot of other people might I add. To throw another one in, when I lean on the gearshift, makes a whine as well. Its a different note, 1 &3 to 2&4. (moving it forwards and backwards...)

If it was the clucth throw out bearing, I would expect it to be noisy with the clutch pressed. Also, there is no whine when in forth gear, when in 4th, the input and output shafts are rotating at the same speeds, so when in another gear or in neutral they will be turning at different speeds which is when the noise starts, this sorta hints it must be inside the gearbox. I might head down to ford tomorrow, and take a manual for a drive and comment on how quiet the box seems to be. See what they say, ie. make them eat their own words.

Hey guys, I have an 04 xr6t, and it has developed a serious whine. On start up, being hot or cold, you can hear it. Press the clutch in and it goes away. You hear the whine slow down when selecting 1st, but take off the whine becomes really loud. You hear the same slow down whine into 2nd, then again loud, same again into 3rd, then once again really loud, then when selecting 4th, no noise at all! But once you go for 5th, the whine comes straight back. I have had the box in and out a few times, had every bearing replaced, had the shafts checked with a dial indicator, changed the oil, had the preload and end float tolerance set different specs, and nothing has changed. Before I got someone to start working on it, I contacted ford, and they told me they could fix it but it would be between 1800-3000 to get done. I asked if ford would help cover the costs, but they said no because I had not had regular servicing with a ford dealer. Can anyone tell me at what service do they service the gearbox? I decided to get a local mechanic to do the work for me, he contacted a few ford service techs, they helped at the start, but now they are telling him that this noise is normal in all 5 speed gearboxs. Does anyone have, or had, this problem, is there anything I have missed out in checking or changing? Cheers Ruby

I may as well name them, felt I got ripped off on the replacement deal. It was an extreme clutch flywheel package. I originally blew up the original ford clutch, being silly of course. Put an extreme kit in. At the start it rattled, probably bent clutch finger and smelt of burning clutch. I just thought it was from the previous clutch crap floating around. No more than 7 weeks driving later, I couldnt start my car. They use button head screws to secure the ring gear to the wheel, so obviously they wouldnt hang on. Also the clutch was rooted as well, lots of wear in strange places. I swear I didnt give this one a hard time, I was still letting it settle in. Alot of time without a car, and a very sore hip pocket finally got my car back on the road. The first clutch blew just before christmas, which made it hard without wheels over that break, and of course the second one had to go just before easter. I dont think ill drive my car for the whole of october just to make sure I got wheels for melb cup weekend!

I had an alloy flywheel with a steel ring gear on my car for a while. Ended up spinning the ring gear on the flywheel. It was fine when I parked it at night, next morning awful sound when I tried to start the car. Im back to a steel flywheel, def wont get that problem again.

Before you get too involved with windows processes, a good place to start is by looking at your Startup in your System Configuration. You can get to this by typing MSCONFIG in the run dialog box. Look at whats in the Startup tab, and compare these to the website http://www.sysinfo.org/startuplist.php This is a good website that is updated regularly. It will give you an idea if the program is a trojan or not. If you want to take the next step to decide what process is worthwhile running or not, you could check out http://www.tasklist.org/ If these are trojans, or viruses, it may be difficult to remove, if they keep reappearing after a system reboot, you could run REGEDIT from the run dialog box, do a search for the EXACT process name or startup item, and delete any key that contains this. Just a hint, be very careful playing around with reg keys, could cause you more trouble if you delete the wrong key.

It wasnt the battery, it was something else that I might post later. Until its all sorted out im keeping my mouth shut til we work out who stuffed up. It could end up being my fault.

yeah tried both, didnt have a real steep long hill to try it, but it just felt like there wasnt enough compression building up

Hey guys, having trouble with a certain part of my car, (dont want to go too far into it at the moment) and basically I should be able to roll start my car, but dont seem to have any luck in doing so. Even a local mechanic tried, and although he said he nearly got it going, he didnt. So, has anyone had to roll start a XR6T, and if so, had any troubles doing so?? Cheers

if I can give u any advice before your warrenty runs out, its get your rear brakes completely refitted, including discs, shoes, adjusters etc etc, it will only get worse and worse. Your shoes are incorrectly adjusted, and there is a small hole in the side of the brake drum to adjust this, but it is a pain in the arse to get to. Removing the drum damages the shoes, and adjusting the shoes, it was a hit and miss thing, not holding, and then rubbing. In the end, replaced the lot, and can straight away notice the difference. Holding in reverse, and no drag felt on the rear after sitting on the handbrake for a while.

I have the same rattle after replacing my clutch with an extreme. From what I have heard its because I didnt get the flywheel machined, and/or balanced to my car. And/or what I can hear is uneven clutch fingers. Im not sure if this is true, but when I went to a clutch bloke, he sort of set up a rig and showed me the different affects clutches can have when not machinced and balanced to a car. Made sense to me. When you press the clutch pedal, u load up the fingers and even them out therefore not rattling bouncing of different height fingers. Doesnt look like it will do any damage, and I sure as hell aint getting back under my car to rip the box off any time soon. Just my two bobs worth.

I cant really say it was flogged, Ive never seen one like that before either. Attached is a pic of the clutch disc, why its not totally ripped to shreds is beyond me. Cheers beauies for the offer, but I got it inspected and if it was to be welded, it may cause more fatigue. It should be ok, as long as I dont have the same problem again.

Well, I persivered with the grease method, and FINALLY it popped out. Copped a face full of grease, but it was well worth it. Glad I didnt hit it with the die grinder, could have caused more headaches. Cheers guys, I owe you a beer. Thanks Phantom for the torque specs. Much appreciated.

Does anybody have any suggestions on how to remove the spigot bearing? Im about to attack it with a die grinder (carefully of course) to weaken the thing and hopefully it will collapse. Slide hammers and bearing pullers have been no help, and the idea of packing it full of grease to push it out just made a huge mess. Anyone else had difficulties getting one out? Only reason I decided to replace it was it was rough rolling. Also, can anybody tell me what the torque specs are for the flywheel, clutch, and gearbox bolts on the BAXR6T? Ford werent any help, they couldnt tell me because if something went wrong they would be at fault, and VACC wouldnt tell me cos I didnt have a member number. Obviously number 69 wasnt a good choice. Cheers

Yeah the flywheel was a bit worse for wear. Its a stocky car. 5 speed box. no power upgrades, but was really close too... Its driven on the street, so its not driven hard constantly, courtesy of aussie road rules, but every now and then I may rotate the tyres just for a kick. Its just one of those things that seem to hang in there until the warrenty runs out.
