The way I look at it is, the more money you earn, and the more money you spend, the more tax you should pay. Its as simple as that. Whether you like it or not, our society is based on the rich contributing to support the nation more than the poor because they have more capacity to do so. Some may see it as a penalty, others may see it as their duty. I for one, who earns more than the average wage (but I'm certainly not rich), am happy to pay my taxes and don't see a tax increase on a luxury item as a 'penalty'. Luxury goods are just that, they aren't a necessity. If you don't like paying more tax on luxury items, don't buy luxury items. No-one is forcing you to. And if you don't like the way our society is run, and has run successfully for the past 100 years, then go live in Brazil and drive through the favallas in your expensive, untaxed car everyday. I'm sure you'd change your tune when you wouldn't be able to park your fancy car anywhere because of the incredibly high crime rates due to the high unemployment, due to the terrible education funding, due to the rich not being taxed accordingly. The less divide there is between the rich and the poor, with funds being distributed reasonably and rationally, is a means to a well run society. Brazil is the perfect example. They have the biggest divide between rich and poor and an untiered tax system, and the crime rates, and quality of life there for the majority of the population is astonishing. I agree with you in one part though, this government (and every other for the past 50 years) has spent too much money on welfare, and more funding needs to go into eliminating as much welfare fraud as possible. But this is a case of spending money to get money back, which would more than likely cancel each other out. Without researching further into the amount of funding lost per annum due to welfare fraud, I can't comment as to whether increasing funding to catch welfare cheats would be a viable option. However, I don't believe in cutting welfare spending for the sake of rich people being able to enjoy more luxury items for less. As for saying you have to accept this government because they were elected... well what else are you going to do? Break every law passed by this government because you didn't vote for them? lol You can disagree with them, fair enough, open debate and criticsm is healthy in a democratic system, but whether you like it or not, Labor is in power until 2010-2011, and you're just going to have to live with it.
