  1. I gave up turning it over to find out if it actually lined up or not so couldn't be sure but it did have bent valves in the end. Still doesn't mean timing was out as the cause of the bent valves is unknown. Probably will be another 4 weeks. I'm picking up the head next Saturday and will get the final bits amd pieces through the week. But won't be able to start working on it until the 22nd of July.
  2. Update, the engine machinist found 4 bent intake valves. 1 really bad and the others were only slight bends. Not sure which ones they lined up to but glad I got them to do a complete service and not just machining the head surface! Also Got the 12mm arp head studs, new gmb water pump and just going the ford oem head gasket for now! Still looking at timing chain and guides.
  3. I'll take the head hypoformance on the coast on Thursday and have them inspect, test and machine.
  4. no damage to any plugs, crank moves fine, all pistons come up to the same position.
  5. Any Thoughts? No obvious damage.some Signs of coolant in the pistons but could of been due to disturbing it while the head was removed. I'll take the head hypoperformance on the coast on Thursday and have them inspect, test and machine.
  6. I replaced the cams when I did the valve springs because they were damaged (pitted on some lobs). I got some second hand cams from another fg xr6 turbo.
  7. Yep I stupidly ignored that when I did the valve springs. I'm guessing it's possible for timing to jump a tooth or two because of that?
  8. Well had an interesting weekend pulling everything down. Here's a couple of happy snaps along the way
  9. Haha , all the super humans that never make a mistake are in the house, why even bother posting the unhelpful sh*t? To increase your post count of unhelpfulness or to prove that you are better then me. Either way I'd like to keep the post to useful stuff for people that come to these forums for help so take it elsewhere. ill try and keep a bit of a photo diary of pulling the head down and the inspection etc if anyone is interested. Going to price up some arp head studs. Was looking at AR252-4302 first up. Second is a gasket kit including head gasket.
  10. Tune: self tuning via hptuners Fuel: BP98 Kms: 77,000 Boost: higher then it should have been. was watching the ngauge and it shot over 21.5 and stopped showing (showed a 0) Other bits: Had just modded the external gate using a 3 port boost solenoid and the top port for positive pressure to hold the gate shut. Stupidly went for a burn without more testing, tuning and logging (basically broke all of my own rules for self tuning). Cause: Too much boost has blown something. Now need to focus on getting a full diagnosis of the issues to get a parts list together.
  11. nah I didnt hear any particular rattle but was screaming its head off (literally) so pretty hard to hear. what symptoms did yours have?? using coolant? what studs are the go without needing to drill anything out. I want to support circa 500 - 550kw @ 22-25psi to allow for future proofing.
  12. Yeah man sucks bad. I'm really hoping it's the head gasket which is almost a best case scenario, time for stronger head studs and atomic gaskets. Looks like next weekend is pulling the car apart instead of driving it like I was planning :-/ and busses for a few weeks!
  13. Took my car for a blast this afternoon, did a first, second, third take off and then bam white smoke bellowing out the back of the car. pulled over into a service station and the car stalled while filling the servo with white smoke. checked under the bonnet and oil was over the right and left hand sides of engine accessories. Leaked either from head and or from rocker cover but hard to tell exactly. Took pip cap off and white smoke was coming out of the oil cap. coolant still looks normal bright green and not low. Let evrythigg settle and it turns over but won't start. got it towedhome and did a compression test and got the following results: 1= 100 2= 120 3= 90 4=125 5=90 6=160 Did a wet test on cylinder 1 and it turned up the same compression. so I've pulled the rocker cover off and everything looks ok, engine turns over. Cranked the engine over by hand heaps trying to get the timing marks to line up and haven't been able to yet. so thinking and hoping either head gasket or timing issue but could be something worse like ringlands etc? Is next step to pull the head and take a look at the gasket, valves, pistons and bores?
  14. Sound coming soon!! Going to get it plumbed back soon because its going to become known very quickly if I leave it like it is.
  15. In the spirit of continuing this thread of my learnings time for a minor update. I went to Sydney powercruise in feb and had a ball for a few laps until my wastegate started jamming open leaving me with basically zero boost under 4500 then boosting up to like 14 psi. Laggiest car ever! so I started down the path of an external gate. Trying to not spend a heap, as most f stories start, I bought a used 50mm turbosmart progate off gumtree for 200. it came with only half the flanges and vbands so bought some genuine turbosmart parts to finish it off. Added up an extra 100. Then got a friend of a friend to fab up my old ford rear housing with the needed flanges and a pipe etc , done for a great price by a top bloke. fitted it all yesterday and did some runs with mechanical only boost control , it was only boosting to around 7-8psi. So turns out it's a 7psi spring and the wastegate is obviously doing a heaps better job of bleeding boost then the internal ever did. Re enabled the ford factory boost control and it's all good boosting to 19psi. Still getting the wgdc set right so I can turn off closed loop boost control but it's pulling hard and controlling boost really well. Oh btw the old mamba housing seems to jam and it's not anything catching, it appears to be the flapper arm binding on itself!!!!
  16. Cool I'll come up to the meet soon also. Can you pm me your mobile so u can find you guys. We will have a pack of black g6e t's ?
  17. I'm in. + for the cruise depending on where and what time.
  18. Lets organise a cruise so you can see and hear for yourself! Sunday the 29th or sat the 4th of feb? I'm coming to terms with the fact the the hptuner adventure will never end. It's never good enough because there is always something else to consider :-)
  19. So got one of these for christmas.. Still fine tuning the setup but really enjoying having all the data at my fingertips without looking down at a laptop screen.
  20. You can get them with the 1.21AR housing. I think 1000hp would be a stretch but not impossible. Here is the compressor and turbine maps and roughly speaking I think 1000hp would require 100lbs/min airflow so it would out off the compressor's efficiency levels but people stretch the little gtx3576 pretty far off its rated efficiency maps also. Would need around 26psi and 6500RPM for 90lbs/min. or 30psi could see you at 100lbs/min
  21. Now that Garret have the GTX3584RS out with associated specs etc, I thought I would drop this compressor map in here. I know its not the same turbo but specs are very close and without any Mamba compressor maps this is probably as close as we will get to a starting point for compressor efficiency etc. Whats interesting is I have started to monitor the airflow VCM scanner reads. As boost hits 20psi at 3000rpm the scanner shows 36lbs/min then up around 6000RPM its still at 20psi with a air flow reading of 70 lbs/min. Ive run the calcs myself using some assumptions for VE at 95% and at 6k rpm and 20psi I get 65 lbs/min. Upping the VE to 102% gets me the 70lbs mark so it appears close. Does anyone know if someone has installed and tuned a Garrett 3584 turbo yet?
  22. Cheers Peppy for sending it so quickly. Fingers crossed I might even receive it before christmas day. If not Ive got plenty to look forward the week of christmas / new years.
  23. Ill take one for my christmas stocking
  24. Just road tuning at the moment. Trying to talk my mechanic around to letting me strap my car on his dyno once I have it in a happy place. That will give me a chance to measure and possibly even make some more changes.
