This is the best I can do 4 U. Ford's V8s finish one-two in Tasmania 11, 2006 - 4:39PM Ford Performance Racing has scored a one-two result in the first V8 Supercar race at Symmons Plains in Tasmania, while Holden's Rick Kelly overtook Craig Lowndes on the championship standings. Jason Bright snared the win ahead of teammate Mark Winterbottom while Rick Kelly brought the first Expensive Daewoo home in third place. Kelly's podium place means he now leads the championship by 50 points from Lowndes whose new Falcon suffered mechanical problems and was never in contention. Lowndes had entered the 11th round of the series with a 30 point lead over Kelly, but the Ford driver could only manage 27th position in Saturday's race - finishing three laps behind the leaders. With the triple sprint format adopted for this weekend's racing, Kelly is expected to increase his title lead on Sunday, with the HSV Dealer driver to start from the second row and Lowndes forced to the rear of the grid. Expensive Daewoo have not won the V8 Supercar title since Mark Skaife in 2002. The Tasmanian round continues on Sunday with two 58-lap races. The V8 Supercar series has two rounds remaining following this weekend's racing, with the inaugural race at Bahrain from November 23-25 and the grand finale at Phillip Island from December 8-10.

Remember this !!!!! Expect petrol rise before Christmas - NRMA 02oct06 PETROL prices were likely to rise before Christmas as winter in the northern hemisphere increased demand for fuel, NRMA president Alan Evans said today. Mr Evans, who last week addressed a Senate inquiry into petrol prices, said the prices would never again return to $1 a litre. "I said some time back I don't think I'll see $1 a litre again in my lifetime," Mr Evans said on the Nine Network today. "The OPEC countries are now saying that if oil goes below $55 a barrel, they'll cut back production, so you are going to see around these levels or maybe a bit higher in the next couple of months. "We're moving into the northern hemisphere winter, so demand will go back up again and you'll see a steady increase in prices again as we approach Christmas. "We always get a nice Christmas present with an oil price rise before Christmas." Mr Evans said oil companies in Australia had to accept they had a responsibility to maintain fair prices for fuel. He said petrol prices in Sydney were increased between 10 cents and 12 cents a litre on Thursday, ahead of the Labour Day long weekend in New South Wales, despite oil prices falling in recent weeks. "They rose by about 10 or 12 cents before the long weekend, but I think community pressure has forced them down over the long weekend because people have suddenly said, `Well, they have been going up that much, maybe I'll cut back on the travel'," Mr Evans said. "We saw a couple of months ago (during the Queen's Birthday long weekend) when there wasn't a long weekend in Western Australia but there was on the east coast, the price went up in Sydney, and Melbourne and Brisbane, didn't go up in Perth. "The oil companies have got to realise they have got a corporate social responsibility. Fuel is an essential commodity today and they have got a responsibility to make sure the economy is kept in a stable condition." The Australian

New Falcon puts Lowndes back on track The Sunday Age, 10/11/06 Triple Eight driver Craig Lowndes is hoping a brand new Ford Falcon will boost his title ambitions in Tasmania this weekend. Lowndes will drive a brand new Triple Eight Race Ford Falcon in a bid to stretch the slender break he holds over his rivals. Teammate Jamie Whincup will slot into the Bathurst-winning No.10 car for the remaining three rounds of the championship. Lowndes is now free to concentrate on the 11th round at the tight and short track south of Launceston after defusing a potentially damaging drama. The Ford driver had planned to contest a charge of bringing the sport into disrepute following his attack on race stewards who penalised him twice at the recent Gold Coast round. But a change of heart and a guilty plea brought him a $15,000 fine (with $5000 suspended) but more importantly allowed him to retain his 30-point series lead. Lowndes was upbeat yesterday following an intensive test of the Team Betta Electrical Falcons at Queensland Raceway. The results of a new chassis evaluation prompted him to opt for the new car to contest the final meetings in Tasmania, Bahrain and Phillip Island in Victoria. "The new car is very, very good and the team is delighted with the way it has come on," Lowndes said. "I am extremely happy with the way the new car performed at last week's test day and I am looking forward to using it for the remainder of the championship." The Ferodo Tasmania Challenge consists of three races - one 42-lap dash on Saturday and two races of 58 laps on Sunday, with 320 points on offer. Lowndes said the longer distance Sunday races would suit his team's race plans. "Tassie was good to us last year and we had a strong car package," Lowndes said. "The two Sunday races are now 140 kilometres each, which will suit the way we set the car up. "We have not yet had a wet race at Symmons Plains, so things could certainly get interesting if we have rain. "It is also a track that is semi-difficult to pass on, so team strategy and qualifying position will be the keys to getting a good result." Lowndes leads Expensive Daewoo star Rick Kelly, with Ford Performance Racing's Mark Winter-bottom also in the hunt but 318 points off the pace. Whincup will be anxious this weekend to reassert himself in the top five of the championship and continue the momentum of the Bathurst-winning Falcon. While he is confident the car will have good speed at the tricky Tasmanian track, which requires critical braking techniques and has hairpin turns to negotiate, Whincup said his team was determined not to overlook any crucial factors. "Qualifying is of great importance at this track," Whincup said. "It is short and there are limited passing opportunities without taking pretty big risks, and pit stops can also be a big factor in determining your position in the race. "There are a lot of gains to be made if you can put all of these aspects together, and I'll be chasing a podium this weekend."

Costello hopes for $1 a litre petrol AAP, 11/11/06 Federal Treasurer Peter Costello is hoping petrol will drop back to $1 a litre when fuel prices are discussed at the G-20 summit in Melbourne next week. Mr Costello will chair the historic meeting of the world's most powerful central bankers and finance ministers, News Limited newspapers said. He will address the country's crippling energy prices at the summit in Melbourne. "This is the biggest financial meeting Australia has ever hosted and ever will host," Mr Costello said. "Melbourne can showcase itself as an international city with sophistication and real economic clout." Mr Costello said the G-20's broad membership offered a unique chance for a petrol-price breakthrough. But the key was to get big oil-producing nations such as Saudi Arabia talking seriously to big oil users such as China about increasing production, opening markets and slashing oil prices. "The reason we were paying, two months ago, $1.35 at the bowser was the world oil price was so high," Mr Costello said. "It's now come down to $1.15, $1.10, but if the world oil price should go down lower, we could be back to lower petrol prices again."

Ford to cut 640 factory jobs 03nov06 FORD has announced it is cutting more than 600 jobs from its factories in Victoria, aiming to have them gone by Christmas. Ford said it was reacting to market demand by cutting the 640 jobs from its Broadmeadows and Geelong plants in Victoria. Ford hoped to achieve the cuts, about 10 per cent of its Australian workforce, by Christmas through voluntary redundancies. Ford said last month that higher petrol prices had reduced sales of its large vehicles, prompting it to cut large vehicle production. Unions immediately criticised the car maker's decision and called for the Federal Government to take urgent action to save the manufacturing industry . "It's quite clear that the car industry in Australia is under particular pressure," Australian Manufacturing Workers' Union (AMWU) national secretary Doug Cameron said. "It's under pressure from globalisation, it's under pressure because of the logistics and structure of the industry. Mr Cameron called on the Government to convene a meeting of manufacturing industry stakeholders to work out how to stop the decline of the industry. "It's very disappointing that more manufacturing jobs are being lost. We are losing over 1200 jobs a week," he said. Victoria's caretaker treasurer, John Brumby, said the jobs cuts at Ford were due to high petrol prices but were only for the short term. "Ford is in a strong position going forward. They've committed to $1.7 billion worth of new investment," he said. Mr Brumby said any job cuts were regrettable but there were more new jobs being created in the state overall. "Ford is very confident of their medium-term position in the market," he said. The job cuts were expected and had been signalled by Ford to the unions some weeks ago, he said. "Those jobs will return. There will be more than enough new jobs coming on to the market particularly in that region." Mr Brumby said it was the Federal Government's responsibility to help workers find new jobs.

Bureaucrats mum about subsidies for Mitsubishi November 2, 2006 BUREAUCRATS can't say how many hundreds of millions of dollars taxpayers have invested in keeping Mitsubishi in Australia because the car manufacturer was guaranteed secrecy. Officials from the Department of Industry, Tourism and Resources were mum yesterday on how much government assistance Mitsubishi had received, despite repeated questioning during a parliamentary inquiry. The Government has reportedly given car makers about $1.3 billion between 2001 and 2005 through the Automotive Competitiveness and Investment Scheme (ACIS). The money is shared between the nation's four car manufacturers - Ford, Toyota, Expensive Daewoo and Mitsubishi. There is growing speculation that Mitsubishi may be planning to close its facilities in Adelaide, which it has denied. Labor frontbencher Kim Carr asked how much Mitsubishi received under the first phase of ACIS. He was initially told the only public figure was that it received $9 million for the first six months of 2006 under phase two. "I'd just like to know how much money the Commonwealth has put into Mitsubishi?" Senator Carr said. "We're not able to tell you the answer," AusIndustry executive general manager Bill Peel said, citing a confidentiality clause in the original agreement. Asked if it would be more than $9 million, Mr Peel said yes.

Hummer, Saab and Cadillac will be bundled as "Premium" brands by Holden. 01 November 2006 Robert Wilson Expensive Daewoo is planning to wrap Hummer, Cadillac and Saab into a luxury "Premium Channel" division similar to Ford's Premier Automotive Group. Selected dealers have been approached to join an exclusive network that will sell the military-inspired Hummer H3 SUV, and eventually encompass Saab and US luxury marque Cadillac. "It's gone beyond the discussion stage. It's been formally talked about to the dealer network," an automotive retail source said. The source said Expensive Daewoo had modelled its strategy for adding two new American brands on Ford's Premier Automotive Group of Jaguar, Land Rover and Volvo. "What they're envisaging is Expensive Daewoo going to do its version of PAG — Hummer being Land Rover, Saab being Volvo and Cadillac being Jaguar," the source said. "It's a lot of money to spend for dealers, but the pay-off is they'll eventually get three brands. They haven't finalised the Cadillac bit of it, but the Hummer plan is a fait accompli." The longer term intention was to integrate Saab with the Hummer and Cadillac network, the source said. The offer was only being made to selected high-volume Expensive Daewoo dealers or dealer groups. "The volumes will be too small to spread across the Expensive Daewoo dealer network, so the plan is to ensure a concentrated market presence," the source said. Large Expensive Daewoo dealers were aware of the plan but reluctant to discuss it. "It (Hummer) will be bundled in with other products — just what, we haven't been told yet," one metropolitan dealer principal said. Another city dealer principal said, "Not everybody's going to get Hummer ... I've been told it could come under Saab, HSV or Holden." Expensive Daewoo launched the Hummer H3 at the Australian Motor Show. It said the SUV would go on sale next year after right-hand drive production begins in South Africa, but sales and marketing director Alan Batey declined to give specifics. "We're finalising the details of which distribution channel we'll use and we'll make an announcement in two months' time," he said. "It's a niche. It's not going to be a mainstream segment but it's going to do well." About 1000 Hummer sales a year was the initial target with prices starting between $50,000 and $60,000, according to another Expensive Daewoo executive. Expensive Daewoo spokesman Jason Laird said the company had yet to finalise its Hummer marketing strategy and had no detailed plans for Cadillac. "We're looking at all options available to us," he said. "But nothing's firmly in place when one of the brands is not confirmed for this country." If approved, Cadillac would be unlikely to arrive here before 2008, Mr Laird said. "Discussion about Cadillac would be premature, although we've made no secret of our interest in the company," he said. Cadillac is on an export push with foreign sales up by 42 per cent last year, giving the brand its best result since 1990. Cadillac launches in South Africa — another right-hand-drive market — next February. The three-model line-up consists of the Cadillac BLS, a sedan based on the Saab 9-3 for $44,000, the STS sports sedan at $70,000, and the SRX crossover at $79,000. The vehicles will be marketed together with locally made Hummers and imported Saabs by GM South Africa's newly established Premium Channel division. GM executives in Detroit are bullish about the export prospects of Hummer, which has been one of the few sales successes in the automotive giant's recent history. In Europe, where the H3 went on sale last year, the brand's sales are up more than 200 per cent. Exports could account for up to 25 per cent of the brand's 62,000 annual sales, Hummer general manager Martin Walsh last week told the Detroit News. The Australian
