The Skid Factory - episode discussion

That's reminded me - I did some scaling for Bosch 968s as I was about to buy them for the BA. The data available was for a range of fuel pressures, but not 4 bar. I wanted to go through the process of doing it myself rather than just copying from someone else, so did some calcs and then was going to dial in on the road. I'll post them up later, maybe in the DIY tuning thread, to see if the approach I used was correct. I basically graphed the data I had and used a line of best fit to work out 4 bar values. Won't use the values now as I'll use a different injector in the FG (maybe Bosch 57lb or something). Would still be useful to know if I'm understanding the concepts correctly though. -

And, which is fair enough, for copy and paste ability. If I was tuning every day I'd rather be able to quickly do an outstanding job on a couple of different injectors rather than spending more time doing an ok job on lots of various injectors. -

It is a good general question. I've often wondered why people put monster injectors in 98 cars with moderate power, when surely the cost and idle/cruise characteristics would be better with something smaller. Probably a mix of bragging rights, shops wanting to upsell to a more expensive product and shops knowing that customers will be back for more power later. In this case though, yeah it's E85 and the package is clearly aiming at considerable power. Edit: haha what the heck was with the Family Guy bit at the start?? -
Yeah we will be there soon! Both kids are starting to eat like horses and look like they'll be well over 6 feet. At one stage my younger brother was eating 20 Weet Bix for breakfast every day.
-
My family currently uses exactly one row of Weet Bix every morning.
-
That is the absolute worst. I hate it when people try to be heroes and infect 5 other people.
-
Success! Had to use a second spanner as an extension, brace a chisel against a brick I had a foot on, and sit on the engine so it didn't move. Thanks again guys! Engine picked up and gone. I'm basically down to transmission, cat, steering wheel, wheels and a few panels now so will strip it next weekend ready for metal recycling. Not bad for two weeks!

Awesome, thanks mate. That's a big help. I've got three bolts loose so last one should be simple with that advice.
-
What am I missing with the torque convertor? The Ford manual seems to suggest it just stays with the trans, however mine stayed with the engine. Max Ellery manual says the four bolts from the flywheel to the convertor need to be undone, which makes more sense. I've loosed three by bracing against another tight bolt, however the last one I'm struggling to crack as the convertor wants to rotate. This is my first rodeo obviously!

Looks like it's sold. Guy rang me as I was pulling in the driveway with the engine crane. I'll let you know if he doesn't come through with the cash tomorrow!
-
Yeah doesn't take much to get someone to proof read your site. If I go that way, I'd probably paint it or see if he will make up something a bit plainer. Meanwhile, poor car:

Thinking back to that talk about P clamps etc to attach water and oil lines for the turbo, a guy buying parts off me last week put me onto these: http://www.mackielecindustries.com.au/product/barra-stainless-hanger-for-braided-turbo-oil-and-water Not a bad option. I'm still in two minds as to whether or not it's worth doing a new oil feed on the FG or leaving factory. If I change it I'll do the water line too and get one of these.
-
Well, other than disconnecting some wiring, I'm pretty sure I'm ready to hook up the chains and pull my motor and trans out tomorrow. Except for the 27 things I've probably missed...
-
I'm still suspicious about the wife's story when the diff blew in the BA...
-
Seems lame, but I've got way too much mechanical sympathy for that! Heaps of tread in the fronts (except shoulders) and rears, so might try to sell them after they are replaced. I'm sure someone else will be keen to tear them up!
-
Wow just googled those Grenlanders. Couldn't find 19s, but the 18s in similar width and profile are $82...
-
I'm up for new tyres too I think on the FG. The Nangkang NobleSports on the front are flogged on the shoulders and the rears are near new, but some weird "Grenlander" brand. Judging by the rego docs, Pickles chucked some second hand tyres on to get it to pass. I loved the Goodyear Eagle F1 Directionals on my BA. But Invos are $209 (as opposed to $286) in my size and everyone here seems to like em. Looks like they wear faster based on the ratings, but more than offset by the saving.
-
I'm about to do mine too. I'm planning to run a pair of wires under the dash and use the ground point at the fuse box and one of those add a circuit things so I don't need to cut any factory wiring (I just prefer doing it that way) https://www.narva.com.au/categories/electrical/fuses_accessories/fuse_holders/add_a_circuit I'm not worrying about dimming at this stage.

Haha I've shifted $2k of parts out the door in just over a week and still have motor, turbo, box in the car! Turns out straight B-series don't come up too often in Canberra for wrecking. The best actual cash in hand ready to go offer I got on the whole car was $3200. Learning heaps along the way too. Engine and box will come out Saturday so more fun to come.

Goodbye front guards, front bumper and diff cradle... Hello garage space!
-
Yeah I know! And I didn't even get called champ or bud. A couple of quick questions guys. To get a front door off (which should be extra easy as the front guards are gone), I've obviously got to disconnect the door wiring. Is it just a matter of prying out the rubber boot near the hinges and there should be a wiring connector in there somewhere? Also if someone is looking for a full conversion, is it basically ECU, BEM, ignition barrel, drivers door lock and keys? Is that enough to prevent any recoding from a security perspective?
-
So far this weekend, I've had 6 people booked from Gumtree or Facebook to pick up parts and all 6 have turned up! Totally different experience to trying to sell it. Everyone who had come has stopped and chatted for a while about their cars. Dropped a diff cradle for the first time time. Took about 2.5 hours, but would be quicker next time. Would definitely be quicker with an impact wrench too.

Mate I'm wrecking my BA and have the phone power adaptor plugged in under the dash. I always liked it because I could splice into it without cutting into factory wiring and could therefore unplug my own wiring if I was chasing a fault. If you PM me your address I'll send it to you for free. Already has some wiring spliced into it that you can join too. As Keith says, it doesn't help with on with headlights issue though.

I used to drive VXs and VZs heap for work when I had my EL. The gearboxes were chalk and cheese. The Daewoos were rubbish. I've always liked the BTR - super smooth and good ratio spacing. After a few weeks with the ZF though, I'm in love.
