Haha that's me today. Someone asked how I was settling back into work after the holidays. Well, as you ask that question I'm washing down a couple of Panadol with a coffee, so take a wild stab. Plus fitted everything up last night with my new fittings and the actual cooler core is leaking. I now have a hose going out of the transmission and straight back in again so that the car can drive!

...for bike racks!

I'm just glad I worked hard so I could be born in a country like Australia

Just picked up one of these so I can finish the job tonight faster. My line fittings should arrive today. Figured I'll probably service it every couple of years or so, plus the Kluger needs about 16 diffs and trans done every couple of years so about to buy a drum if that stuff too.

Don't use the rear location for a wideband - it is not an ideal spot for an accurate reading. You want to be between the first sensor and the cat. Exhaust place only charged me $30 to weld in a new bung for the wideband. If you turn off the rear sensor you can leave it there, or fit a plug to fill the hole.
-
Yeah should have done that. The drill option is a good tip. Actually a funnel with a hose would have done the job too. I'm 3 litres in (but paused until my fittings arrive) so will probably finish with the little guy, but will pick something up ready for the next trans and service.

I wouldn't worry about warm up with going to oil to air and deleting the factory heat exchanger. Heaps of people have taken this approach. There's an email from ZF floating around on a post somewhere where they say the trans heats itself quickly and is designed to operate from -20 degrees. I might be wrong, but to my thinking if your thermostat is closed at startup, the coolant parked in the heat exchanger until the thermostat opens won't be getting warm anyway. One of the items you can read with an OBDII scanner is trans temp so no need to install a gauge. Yes, you will need to top up the fluid. I figured if I was getting under there I'd do a full service and flush anyway. I've taken plenty of pics and will write up a full version of what I did in the next couple of weeks.
-
@Puffwagon Haha only if you pump the trans fluid in! I counted the 25 pumps for 100mL (there's no good way to say that). If I flush and fill with the full 20L barrel, that's 5000 pumps!

Nup - have just fitted an air to oil cooler upfront. Factory cooler is still hanging there until I get a fitting to connect the two coolant hoses together [emoji16]
-
One more dumb question - anyone know whether the top or bottom cooler port on the ZF is the outlet? Can't find the info anywhere. Could hook up a hose into a bucket to check I spose. Ideally I would connect the hose with fan thermo switch to the outlet of the trans (inlet of the cooler). Doesn't matter heaps though as either way it will still act as a temp threshold.

Kids broke a branch and cable tied it back together. Bush mechanics.

I've had a Li-Ion trimmer for about 6 years. There's some stuff it struggles with (we were in a much smaller place when I got it) but being able to just press a button and go is pretty awesome. Yours is more higher end than mine though. I got a Bosch that had the same batteries as my drill and impact driver, so always have plenty of batteries ready to go.

Thanks guys - that's awesome. Means the part I was shipped wasn't the ZF part, and what I've ordered definitely is. Bit annoying to now have the car off the road for a couple of days, but oh well. Can't quite bring myself to reconnect the factory heat exchanger in the meantime now that the car is officially incapable of bringing all the boys to the yard. The fittings the parts place had in stock weren't in packaging so I'm guessing he thought they were ZF fittings but was mistaken. Edit: yeah I saw that one Arron. Seemed too good to be a true and possibly not right, so I played it safe and ordered through TI Performance. Small saving not worth the car being off the road for a few more days if it's wrong.

Thanks! Would be interesting to know. Not urgent - I think I've got enough info to keep me moving. I'm measuring the part of the fitting that pushes into the box obviously.
-
I might be on to something now. Raceworks also list two parts and provides outside diameters for the fittings. The ZF part no has an OD of 16.4mm (which matches my factory fitting) and the 6R part has an OD of 18.8mm (which is what the Aeroflow part I was sent measures). I'll reward Raceworks for providing some meaningful specs and order the ZF part they list as its OD matches my factory fitting. Would still be interested if anyone else has done this what size their box had - on face value alone it seems like the photo and description are matches up to incorrect part numbers for Aeroflow. I'll email them and find out as it might save someone else some trouble.
-
So I may have jumped the gun here. Went to the parts guy this morning and the Aeroflow part he had matched the Aeroflow part I already had (and had the same part number). So seems what was in the bag was the correct part. He was sure that was the part he always supplied, but is definitely different to my factory line. He actually had a Falcon ZF in his workshop - we had a look at that and my factory line fitted it and the Aeroflow part didn't. So Aeroflow and Speedflow both list two separate parts for ZF adaptor. Aeroflow have AF72-5050 (which I bought) and AF72-5051. 5050 says it for a Ford ZF, 5051 for a Ford 6R 6HP26. Speedflow list 922-ZF-08-BLK and 922-6R-08-BLK. Proflow only list one part number, but the picture doesn't look like mine. Looking at the pics on the Aeroflow site - the 5050 seems to look like mine (with the chamfered end) but is a straight end. The 5051 look like a straight end but I'm wondering if the pictures are around the wrong way. Given the 5050 was wrong, I'm thinking of ordering the 5051 and seeing what happens. Has anyone else come across two types of fittings before?

Lol what's worse than installing a transmission cooler on stands in 38 degrees? Realising you've been sent the wrong fittings. The packet has the correct part number, but is definitely different to the factory fitting. Is also different to the pic on the Aeroflow site, so I'm guessing the wrong part went in the Aeroflow bag at the factory. Thankfully I found a performance parts place a couple of km away with the correct fittings in stock (they are special order only from Supercheap and the hose places). So two minutes under the car tomorrow and I'll be ready to start filling up with the old Gulf Western. Have me a chance to finish the wiring instead. Have a thermostatic switch wired to an led in the car to trigger the fan , plus a manual override switch with its own led to force the fan on. Wired in parallel to the new relay for the fan.

http://www.formula1-dictionary.net/flow_viz_paint.html This should sort you out! Was someone saying recently that the fill plug on their ZF was tight? Far out - ended up with a steel pipe over my breaker bar to crack the bugger.

Nice work on being honest - not everyone would have done that

Nice work as always Gaz! Thanks for putting in the effort. Reminded me I was going to get you the links to the leather handbrake and auto shifter boots I got. Leather looks much better than the stock stuff. I got these blue stitch ones to match the XR blue stitching on the seats and door cards, but the seller has other stitching colours too, including black. https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.com.au%2Fulk%2Fitm%2F153318790716 https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.com.au%2Fulk%2Fitm%2F153310799124 -
Haha thanks mate - just happy not to tip it onto its roof today! Will get some repair quotes tomorrow. Getting the trans fluid to 38 degrees should be easy in this weather - will be pretty much pumping it in at that temperature.

That sucks mate

Much more successful day on the tools today. Got my trans cooler and fan in. Just need to run the hoses, do the trans oil and finish the wiring. Is mega hot so I'm just doing a bit each day. Taking plenty of pics so I can write up what I've done. Doesn't seem to be much in the way of detailed info on doing this job and as these cars get older there'll be more DIY I imagine. Also de-engined a mate's Hilux yesterday, so putting the stupidity of the other day behind me gradually!

Looks in good nick. I wonder if certain '06 Tezzas had stronger bottom ends, or just standard BA/BF stuff?
