  5. My point has nothing to do with unions. As you pointed out tmac this is one of the worlds worst economic melt downs and what I was trying to point out is that we still have our heads above water. I am not saying we are all rosey but it could be a hell of alot worse. Yeah the prevous government did put us in a good ecomonic position thanks to our local resources boom but they did not face anything half as bad as the current GMC.

  7. Cooperation and Development (OECD) is predicting that Australia will be one of only a few countries to avoid a recession in the current global downturn. The Paris-based organisation forecasts that the richest economies in the world will shrink by a collective 0.4 per cent next year. The half-yearly report predicts that 21 of the 30 member economies of the OECD will go through a protracted recession of a magnitude not seen since the early 1980s. But Australia's economy is likely to avoid the worst of the financial meltdown, with predictions it will grow by a relatively healthy 1.7 per cent. That is only slightly less than Treasurer Wayne Swan's prediction of 2 per cent growth. "These forecasts are encouraging, but I think what the OECD has confirmed [is that] we are facing extremely difficult global conditions," Mr Swan said.

  12. you say they do nothing for the workers and union members are f*cked but whenI give an example of unions helping people you slag them off. Just recently our work lodge gave $50G to a women to go get life saving brain surgery in the US so her kids could have a chance at knowing thier mother when they grow up which was not a tax deductable donation to charity. If you dont like unions then good for you your aloud to but unions do alot for local communities and stand next to you when getting shafted by large companies (James Hardy). Just food for thought. its not compulsory to be in a union at my work

  15. Helping Local Families in Need CFMEU members at two Geelong construction sites have raised money to help local needy families. Members at the Westfield Bay City Shopping Centre collected donations for a terminally ill Geelong girl Mikayla Fisher, so she could go to Sea World on the Gold Coast. Workers on the Deakin University site raised money for single mum, Jodie Meade, who is terminally ill. Jodie's mother received the donation as her daughter was too ill. She was overcome with emotion saying: "I don't know any of you but what I can say is that this money will come in handy. It will be put into a trust fund for Jodie's daughters". The workers were moved to help after hearing about the family's circumstances from one of the workers on the shopping centre site. Making Cancer Kids' Dreams Come True When Warkworth Mine amalgamated with Mount Thorley in 2006, the miners there decided to donate $20,000 to help needy kids. Warkworth Lodge President Russell Trappel said: "The miners donated teh money to the children's cancer support group CanTeen". The money went towards a special camp for the kids in April 2007. CanTeen's Northern NSW Division Manager Clayton Barr said: "We took 60 people away our biggest camp ever and stayed at a recreation centre at Coffs Harbour. All of our activities revolved around the young people challenging themselves to imagine anything was possible. Rescue Helicopter Service Since 1991, the CFMEU Mining & Energy Division has sponsored the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service, operation in the Hunter, Mid North Coast, New England and North West regions. Every member of the Northern Districts Branch makes direct wage contributions to raise a total of around $700,000 for the service each year. In 2006, the affiliated Mineworkers Trust made an additional donation of $250,000 and the Miners' Northern Districts Office topped up their member donations with $100,000, giving the service more than one million dollars. Additionally, the 2007 Miners National Golf Chanpionships raised $9,370 for the helicopter service.
