  1. They aren't illegal if you get an engineer to sign off that it meets the Australian design regulations.
  2. So there is no real evidence at all to support the concept other than it being a great way to make money for a parts manufacturer?
  3. So you have evidence of people who have grenaded engines due to fuel surge?
  4. Worst that can happen is a meteor can hit earth and kill everyone you love. So what?
  5. I've just done some more reading and only when people get to very high power levels do they even consider adding a swirl pot to many hi po cars that come with nothing. Why is our swirl pot inadequate? BF xr6t, what is the difference between the pumps?
  6. The stock tank comes with a decent swirl pot though, unless you are racing the vehicle at what point does a surge tank actually become necessary? A good flog off the lights with 350rwkw will produce less Gs than hard cornering with stock suspension and stock motor, I am just not sold on when you actually need it. Same goes for pump, what does the stock one pump L/hr and at what power level is this exceeded? There are 1000s of nissan GTR skylines from the 1990s with no swirl pot, AWD and 400rwkw who run stock tanks, I have not once heard of a surge tank being required or recommended for them. Imo it sounds like a few companies have had very successful marketing campaigns! Is there any data out there at all?
  7. Has anyone done any science on the issue and found out at what G forces you do lean out from the stock tank? What about the stock fuel pump, what is it rated to L/hr and at what power level does this become insufficient? Has anyone looked at the datasheets and worked this out?
  8. I keep reading about people installing surge tanks, curious when and why this is needed, eg what happens if you don't install it and what are the pros if you do? Fuel pump, when do people start replacing the stock item and why? Is it because the stock flow is not enough or is it a reliability issue, if the latter what are the signs it should be replaced? Thanks
  9. Boost takes like 2 seconds to come on so not really, I'm talking instantaneous torque eg throttle feel.
  10. Going to ask them to anyway. Do morpowa charge similar? I could always go there instead.
  11. I'll be paying someone to tune it initially, then I will either recruit the help of someone with a HP tuners license or consider buying one myself depending on how happy I am with the tune. I've had experience with other tuning packages but nothing in the Ford/GM scene and at $1k for a HP tuners license unless I'm quite unhappy it might not be a worth while investment. The questions here are more just so I know what is available and as prompts to ask the tuner to play with themselves. Thanks for the help.
  12. That is why they changed it in the early VN commodores, you could spin the wheels off the line with the auto with good tyres if you just stomped on it.
  13. From what I've heard the GM ECUs have much much worse throttle maps, ford apparently has gotten it pretty good, though you can see it absolutely is not linear like a cable throttle which explains my poor pedal feel. Thanks for the info peppy it is exactly what I was after, I'll see if we can tweak it slightly. I'm sure if I had access to the tools to debug the asm that runs in the PCM it would take no less than a week to adjust the threshold in which it triggers the fault code, though as you said this is there for a very good reason, to shut the car down if the servo fails and gets stuck open etc so the risks are high if you get it wrong. Ford obviously did it this way to smooth out the throttle for the mum and dad drivers who barely rev the car, probably also improves fuel economy. Remember we are that 1% of buyers who actually care about this stuff, they have to cater to the masses.
  14. That is because I'm not talking about engine torque, I'm talking about throttle responsiveness, you couldn't compare a 900cc car to either of the engines I mentioned torque wise, but it still has better pedal feel/response. A 4L turbo is going to have more down low than any other motor out there, it is about as good as you can get, most 2L turbos are a pile of sh*t down low compared to it.
  15. I'm a perfectionist so if I can get something tweaked I won't stop until I've either done it, or f*cked around with it so much I've made it worse
  16. So it isn't 1:1 from the factory, they have dampened it? Does anyone have the standard mapping they could post up? Curious what it looks like. edit: I'm going to ask if I can have a look at the tuning software when I get the car tuned on Fri, see how much we can fiddle with it and if it improves the feel. What is the map called in the SCT XCAL software? I'll see if Bruce has played with it before.
  17. Just throttle response, if I flatten the throttle at low revs it feels fine and torquey, I mean the motor definitely makes lots of torque at low revs, it just seems to need more throttle than I'd expect. I'm fairly certain the issue is the electronic throttle not the actual motor, though who knows. A great example is the good old 3.8L VN commodore, sh*tbox car and long stroke engine but they have really nice throttle response, the VP etc onwards don't because they changed the throttle design, people commonly change it to get the old feel back. I didn't think my 2.5L turbo 6 cyl was that small, the block is almost the same size as the 4L, had a longer intake tract as well and it had good throttle response.
  18. it isn't really low compression, it is lower sure but far from low. My old 9:1 2.5L turbo skyline felt like it had much more direct throttle response, I'm not sure if it was just the cable throttle or it actually was more responsive, I would have though having an extra 1.5L would surely make the 4L as good if not better off boost though. I wasn't exaggerating when I said my 900cc charade had better throttle feel, it really does feel better at the really low openings eg 10-20%
  19. I'm just talking about off boost performance, eg 1500-2000rpm etc, my old 2.5L felt like it had better off boost performance, though if I flatten it at 2k it feels fine, just feels like it needs more throttle than it should being a big 4L The boost lag feels normal for a turbo car with a turbo that size, eg not coming on until about 3k.
  20. If it had skipped enough teeth for the pistons to finally make love to the valves after years of sexual tension you would have huge mess on your hands, literally and metaphorically, eg your engine would not be running. Stop driving it and take the car to someone who is capable of diagnosing the issue. Do you have white or black smoke? If it is black then you are very lucky, sounds like an air leak, sensor failure, if it is white then I hope your pockets are deep.
  21. Not really sure what you are saying, start modding the ecu?
  22. Do people commonly do it to make the throttle feel less doughly? I swear my 900cc charade feels like it has more torque at 5-10% throttle.
