Serious Rattle From Box After New Clutch Install
bjacobs replied to bjacobs's topic in Driveline Workshop
Try this one, hopefully it works, I think clutch is sprung but not 100% sure, if anyone could confirm that would be good, 230mm xtreme twin plate ceramic Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk -
Serious Rattle From Box After New Clutch Install

Here's a good head scratcher for everyone. Just got a new xtreme twin plate clutch installed with arp flywheel bolts. When I picked up the car, as soon as I started it there was a rattle noise only heard on idle. I drove it home and by the time I got home it was a lot worse. The noise only comes when car is settled at idle, as soon as any revs are applied or the clutch is engaged the noise goes away, when driving the noise is gone. It sounds like a horrible metal on metal rolling/ vibration noise that's initiated when the revs drop right down to idle. So I took the car back to my mechanic and he pulled the box and clutch out again and replaced the throw out bearing with a solid brass bush as well as changing the flywheel bolts back to stock ones as they have a much bigger clamping surface than the arp bolts and torquing them correctly, re installed and noise was gone. Yay! Went for another short drive and the rattle slowly started coming back FML! would happen maybe 50% of stops. Then got worse and worse until it happened every stop again. Got back onto my mechanic and we are going to drop the gearbox oil and see what it looks like and go from there. Does anyone have any other ideas of what this noise could be? Car was fine before new clutch, only has 13,000kms on it, my mechanic has installed the exact same clutch in my mates f6 only Afew months before so it's not like he doesn't know what's going on. Here's a vid of the noise. https://vimeo.com/138801973 Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Clutch is in, got the 230mm twin plate ceramic and xtreme are not joking when they say for race use only! I feels completely different to my mates in his f6. First impressions of mine is a really light pedal, lighter than stock but in a good way, pedal feels really good. The clutch is brutal though. Don't get me wrong, car is still very drivable but I'm now in the market for a daily. I don't think you would be able to drive this in peak hour everyday, taking off from stationary is ooook and you have a tiny amount of slip but you have to feed it some revs (up around 2.5-3k) and then you get a slight shudder from the wheels wanting to spin and your off! But it's an absolute dog when your rolling slow or have to punch a gap, you just get 0 slip and the thing bites so hard haha. However, when you are driving it is unreal, haven't kicked it or anything yet as I'm gonna give it ~1000kms to bed in but just general clutch and driveline feel is so much smoother and so much more engaging when changing, really easy to drive actually. I'm sure I'll learn the trick of it after a couple weeks and it will get easier but I've only driven with it today and it's pretty full on. I strongly suggest doing a good comparison between the less gnarly clutches before going ceramic because you do lose a lot of drive ability. But it is a good feeling knowing it can handle 4th gear kicks haha Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

I'll keep an eye out! Haha Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Ahh that's the dream. I wish I could afford a daily as well haha, gotta stop spending all my money on this thing. Haha I hope so [emoji16] always a good time when another fg pulls up next to you haha Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Cars booked in next week to get an xtreme twin plate ceramic clutch plus earls oil line and a couple of other little bits and pieces. Stock clutch is done, pretty keen to see how it feels with the new one Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Yeh I think it comes down to luck of the draw as well haha but yep auto would make a pretty big difference. If your ok with a bitchy clutch I reckon go for it then, you'll be fine. The drivability wasn't really an issue for me it was more the rattle. People who know nothing about cars must think your cars about to blow when clutch is in haha. I just was interested in the lifetime of them cause like I said my mate only got to test his for about 2 months before his engine went. He's going atomic motor now with a gtx42 so that will be a good test for it when it's done haha Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Oh and he had about 350rwkw, but also had 20% under drives and that wouldn't have helped the pump gears, he also has a heavy right foot! We could hear a rattle for a while and he had his car into numerous shops trying to id the noise but no one could, ended up being that! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Hopefully they get it sorted for you, I think I'll probably go down a similar track, the stock shaft just feels so rubbish and doesn't fill you with confidence to give it a boot full, especially in a manual. My mates was the heavy duty ceramic and I found it ok, was a bit sh*tty if you were tiered or lazy haha but wasn't that bad, I found it really hard to release the pedal when your rolling (like coming up to a red light, clutch in, then light changes before you stop and your still rolling in say 2nd gear then to let it back out again there is zero slip haha it just bites so hard) but apart from little things like that it's dealable Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Oh and they do rattle a lot, almost tuned me off getting one when I heard my mates but the performance of the twin plates are to good to pass up Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

What tailshaft issues have you had and what path are you taking to sort it out? Cause I'm planing to do my tailshaft after clutch but not sure wether to get a whole new one built or just get standard one modified. My mates got the HD twin plate in his F6 and I've driven it a bit but he didn't get to test it for long before he blew his oil pump gears and seized his motor! I liked the clutch from my limited driving with it, it wasn't as bad as some people make it out to be on here imo and it gripped so hard, that's why I was thinking HD just cause I've driven one. By organic do you mean ceramic? Because I noticed the ceramic one is about $100 cheaper, do you know what the difference in lifetime and drive ability is between the two? I'd get the ceramic if it's similar. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

And by road I mean my very long driveway [emoji57] Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Haha I was egging her on to crack it in 4th and she got there.. Just haha. I was consecrating on the bumpy road cause my exhaust hits a bloody tic tac on the ground so limiter bashed 3rd for a sec which wasn't ideal but yeh it's not toooo laggy Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

https://vimeo.com/134468350 Also did a hell good clutch burnout today so will be getting the xtreme HD twin plate I think, what are people's thoughts on it, anyone have one? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Thanks mate, should do a northern beaches cruise [emoji14] haha Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

I cop the diff clunk too, or at least that's what I think it is, car has been to ford on 2 separate occasions for them to look at. When I picked it up after the 2nd time they said it was fine and by the way we have suspended your warranty do to suspension and turbo side intake. Didn't really bother me as it was getting tuned the next day. But then was at heasmans for a week and they had the whole rear end apart and couldn't find anything either so I am happy to say that it is normal! Very very annoying though, mines the worst when taking up load in 1st on a slow take off, clunks when clutch is about half way out and then clunks again when clutch is halfway-fully out on a slow 1st to 2nd change, other gears does very occasionally but not often. Do you have a build thread Matty? Wouldn't mind having a look at your mods, might help me decide what to do next haha Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
-
Ahh I see, so that mod for the gt35 is basically just turning it into a gtx anyway, that makes sense. What sort of power are people seeing from the 76? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
-
I believe you, I was told by atomic that they've seen 510rwkw on e85 out of an f6 turbo with a 11 blade billet wheel and .7 cover, so hopefully can get into the 500 club soon [emoji14] In saying that, What other low mount set ups are definitely capable of 500? I would want to stay Garrett I think so is it just the gtx3582 or is there a bigger bolt on? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
-
It's so hard sometimes just to make the right decision with all the options we have for these cars! Haha. The more I think about high mount vs bolt on, I think I want to eventually go the biggest turbo I can on the stock manifold. The cost of custom dump, intake and cooler piping for high mount set up is just too much for me haha. Just so much want and not enough $$ [emoji28] Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Thanks mate. To be honest thought 380 would be a little more ruthless than it is, might have to strap a bigger snail on and do my fuel system, won't be happy till it spins 4th all day everyday Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Here's some pics and vid of the ute installing the cooler and exhaust before the tune and little video of after just boosting 2nd/3rd. Just wanted to also say I am still super impressed with autotech' service, Spiro's son was in hospital the day I was there and he still stuck around till 7pm to finish tuning my car so that I didn't have to come back the next day. About two weeks since the tune and everything still good, nothing's broken... yet! https://vimeo.com/132883676 Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Wheel spin, if that was clutch there's serious problems haha Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

https://vimeo.com/131926517 Yeh boost comes on later but so much harder. See you later tyres haha Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
