Congrats on the T mate. Yeah, I agree with gogo, sure sounds stock to me. And I reckon that the factory exhaust is pretty loud for a stock car actually.

Great news, good to hear Rapid, very glad that no damage was done.

Thanks for that info Raphoon, I certainly didn't know that. The obvious follow-on question then is, do any tuners leave the adaptive learning function turned on and, if so, why? For those that don't, why not?
-
Don’t know if this has been asked before but I can’t find anything through the search function so here goes. Does anyone know what effect, if any, the supposedly ‘self learning’ ECU in the T has on new Edit tunes? Thankfully it’s becoming a rarer occurrence these days, but there used to be quite a few stories about guys getting new, more powerful Edit tunes that started off running well but later developed issues, such as pinging. I was wondering whether this could be partly due to the ECU making subtle changes as it got to ‘learn’ the new map, driving style, etc? It may well be the case that the more accomplished tuners out there know about any such effects and already take this into account when writing new tunes – would any of those tuners care to comment? Assuming the ECU does have some sort of effect, then what are the implications for tuning? I mean, I’ve heard that you’re supposed to drive around ‘normally’ for a minimum period of time after uploading a new tune to allow the ECU to ‘adapt’ before giving it some curry. If this is true, then what happens if you load up a new tune, whack it on the dyno, give it curry almost straight away, then make adjustments accordingly and repeat the process until you have a ‘safe’ tune? Once you’ve driven off with your brand new tune and the ECU does it’s thing, will that tune change after the ECU’s had some time to adapt? Any views or insight would be greatly appreciated!

Okay, I just did some calculations and this is what I came up with. Twin 2.25" pipes have a combined (cross sectional) area of about 7.95 (inches squared). Single 3" pipe has an area of about 7.07. Single 3.5" pipe has an area of about 9.62. My logic tells me that the larger the area of the tube, the more air it will flow (somebody tell me if that’s incorrect). Based on that, I would say that the stock 2.25" pipes would flow more than a single 3" pipe. Having said that, this doesn’t, of course, take into account things like cats and/or other restrictions like mufflers, etc. Hope that helps.

I would imagine it's just simple physics. Without getting my calculator out, you'll probably find that the combined cross-sectional area of two 2.5" pipes is greater than that of a single 3" one. Area of a circle is pi (approx 3.14) x radius squared. Now, where's my calculator...

No worries mate, glad you took my post in the manner in which it was intended. Yeah, I've got a Walbro too, but (unlike you and unfortunately for me) I don't think I'll ever have to worry about it running out of puff! Your car must be an absolute bloody weapon to drive.

Woah, talk about jumping to conclusions. I know that Nick just happens to be my tuner, but that's not why I'm posting. I obviously have faith in Nick but I also have the utmost respect for Simon. I just think it's a bit of a pity that people get so touchy about the tuner issue, 'cos I gotta agree with Eugene that, in this case, I certainly don't think that Nick was having a go at anyone - hell, he didn't even know who the tuner was!! As for being a Dr Phill, well yes, Nick is certainly a little guilty of that! But that's 'cos of the type of guy he is, way too nice 'n' helpful. He's only trying to give (free) friendly advice to help as many members as he can so don't shoot the poor fella for that. Ugly as he may be, he's still a top bloke. I dunno, Nick, how many times have I told you to take it a bit easy mate?! Having said all that, I'm glad you found the source of the problem, Rapid, and sincerely hope that no damage was done and that you get it all sorted pronto. It's guys like you that test the limits of these cars and many of us appreciate the knowledge we gain from your experiences.

I dunno about 'attracting' heat so much as 'absorbing' heat eg. a black car will be hotter on the inside than a white one because black absorbs more heat from the sun. But a black surface will also radiate more heat than a polished one. So, arguably, a black I/c would be more effective than a polished one because it would radiate more of heat from the hot air it's being filled with and isn't really subject to much sunshine?!

Mate, trying to hide Edit from the dealer is one thing. Trying to hide the fact that you have larger injectors is quite another - they're not complete idiots. If I were you, I'd just come clean and tell 'em what you've done. Then either tell 'em not to drive it or go over and flash back an appropriate tune, preferably a valet one.
-
I'm not normally one to sink the boot in, but it's seriously scary to see members (especially those that have been here for a while) thinking that these cars will run larger injectors safely on factory tunes, especially given the plethora of great info readily available, and regularly discussed, on this site. Hope it all works out for you in the end with no damage done, nesh.

Am I gonna be the first then Woggy?!
-
I want whatever that guy's on, what a load of utter codswollop. I actually painted my polished Wogcooler matt black to make it less obvious, but the same principles apply. The only major difference is that I had to sand mine down a bit to ensure the paint would stick to the previously polished surface. The coolers don't get THAT hot, so shouldn't need a high temperature paint, but a primer/undercoat might be a good idea. But, as others have said, spray light even coats and try not to get TOO much on the fins. Good luck.
-
Great idea and looks fantastic to me, surprised nobody has done this before! Plus you get all the cost advantages of sticking with 17" rims - (decent) larger tyres get very expensive very quickly. Nice one! But like most, I'm not a big fan of the stripe.
-
Thanks mate, much appreciated. Now, bring it on!!!
-
I'd be happy to go along with those recommendations actually, but I'm not sure if DBOSS actually remembers me!! So does that mean I don't have to book accommodation? Do you want the $$ beforehand or when we meet up?
-
Cro, count me in mate, and thanks for organising it! I'll book accommodation shortly, but before I do I was wondering if anyone wanted to share a twin room with me to help keep costs down a bit? I had a double to myself last time and it was a little extravagent I thought! I can't guarantee I don't snore and I only fart occasionally.

Although I was pretty much just an observer when a fellow forum member very kindly 'helped me' fit mine, it definitely looked to me like the front bumper had to come off. But that was a MUCH easier task than I thought it would be - scary how few screws hold that thing in place really (once you take a few screwws out here and there, it literally just pulls off each side and away you go).
-
You said you thought it was an early '80s RX-7, that would place it at about a Series 2 (Series 1 to 3 were that older original 'wedge' shape). I had a 'Gregg Hansford' special (apparently done by some Qld dealers) which was a 1983 Series 2 with a stock 13B, lots of ricey stuff (Recaros, Bilstein suspension, Compomotive mags, etc, etc) and a ridiculously large 3" zorst. Anyway, it went very well for a 'stockie', but was certainly nowhere near as quick as even my XR6T (when it was stock, let alone now). So to imagine it would even begin to compete with a Phoon is just fantasy, if indeed it really is stock.

Well, the car is booked in for its 45K service shortly, and I'm wondering if Mrs Buggy will notice how much better it goes after it... "But sweetheart, it was a major service, OF COURSE it's going to feel better to drive."
-
You've obviously done this before.
-
If the truth be known, I suspect Mrs Buggy is far wiser than I give her credit for. I'm sure she knows about the stock cooler, she's already on to the fact that I have a set of 968's lying around at home and she is more than aware of the Edit, having once commented that driving without it was like "driving with a flat tyre"!! But she has a nasty knack of catching me out when I least expect it. "Buggy, why is our car so low, much more so than other XR6 Turbos?" "Oh, ummm, errr, because it is." Now, BACK ON TOPIC!!
-
You know me so well Chooka!! Actually, this is one occasion where she DOES know about the mod. "Do we really need an intercooler, Buggy?" "Why, of course, dear, ALL turbo cars need an intercooler you know."
-
I got myself a nice new shiny Wogcooler and proceeded to sand it down and spray it a matt black. Can't notice it at all!
-
I stand corrected. Still don't really fully understand but will try and get my head around it! Thanks for the info Zap.
