Decommissioning old septic tanks at a subdivision site over the next few days (thank god for submersible pumps and jackammers). 4 days fishing at Steep Point next week (For those not out west its often regarded as one of the world's premier land-based fishing spots!) In fact - I might even start a thread on "your biggest fish!"

Know how you feel mate - I've been burnt before - I now ring for quotes (my 45k service cost $150 at Centre Ford with me providing my own oil). As for warranty claims, my next Ford will be out of warranty when I buy it so I can just go and get things fixed, pay for it and know its done properly. Getting things fixed under warranty just shouldn't be the headache it so often is.......

Hmmm - just trying to imagine a smaller turbo that spools up even quicker???? Perhaps Ford didn't realise the monster they'd create.
-
Ford put a pretty good ball bearing, liquid cooled Garret GT35/40 in the XR6T which may give increased longevity. To get most Jap turbos into 12s you need a bigger turbo while Ford's GT35/40 is rated up to 700hp I believe. Therefore our turbos are good quality, are not highly strung or working to their full capacity.

A few facts and comparisons to ease your mind. Many earlier Saabs and Volvos with more highly stressed turbo engines than ours will easily do 400 000km with appropriate servicing. I've driven a Liberty RS with 240 000km (which I think run close to 13 psi stock) which drove like new. Turbocharged truck engines are just as durable as non-turbocharged truck engines (I know diesel is a different kettle of fish but its worth considering) Falcon base engines are designed to do many hundreds of thousands of Ks using LPG (up to a million even - as taxis) which provides a hotter combustion environment than petrol. We have a very strong base to work with. and if it does go boom at the end of the day a rebuild will cost less than $2000 with quality parts - you won't find a cheaper-to-fix modern performance engine.

Strange Feeling In Car (feels Like Engine Braking)
markxr6t replied to JimmyXR6T04's topic in General Tech
I'm sure Simon will fix it - something to do with low/no load part throttle fuel delivery being too rich or too lean or something (probably too rich?). Nothing serious, I'm sure. -
Strange Feeling In Car (feels Like Engine Braking)

Is it anything like feeling your air-con cut in and out? I get the feeling you describe under low-load, part throttle application, say at 60ks in 3rd. I think its a part throttle fuel delivery issue (hey - that almost sounds like I know what I'm talking about!) Best solution is to apply more load by pressing the throttle down! Otherwise, putting it into 4th stops it for me. -
Show? Yes! Shine? Hmmm - how do you do that?

PM JB - I think I recall he ran a 13.2 before breaking an axle with 305 rwkw. Geea would also know. If turbocorty ran a 13.2 in his stock 6 spd Phoon (say 220 - 240 rwkw), you should get close. Not with your current clutch, but.
-
But it did it twice... and there were no other anomolies on the day... ← Not strapped down tightly enough perhaps? ← Ahhh - just claim it Kieran! See my earlier post - mine ran more than that once - inconsistency is a (stock) T's forte. Looking at your chart, though, yours definitely produces power well beyond 5000rpm (or up to 185 km per hr). Most other stockers have their power drop off sharply after 5000 - 5200rpm. Your PCM obviously didn't do this on Saturday. Maybe it will next time. Or maybe it won't. I just attribute it to that feeling you get some days when you feel your car is fitter than usual. Enjoy it! (or Edit it!) Mark

T5 Manual with 2nd CAI and K&N Filter: 206 rwkw on Hyperdrive's Dyno Dynamics in shoot 6 227rwkw on Mindarie Custom Exhaust's Dyno Dynamics in Shoot 6. It was the highest reading he'd ever seen for a stocker. (I'm not saying that's what my car has, but it what the Dyno said. I've attached the chart as proof.) The red line is the factory tune. Green line is 8psi (which only got to 7) and blue line was a dodgy 10 psi that never got anywhere near 10psi. Whilst its obvious that all Dynos read differently and humidity adjustments etc have an impact, I also believe that the same car with same tune will run different rwkw at different times, perhaps dependent on how you've been driving as well as obvious things like ambient temp, humidity, heat soak, what side it got out of bed etc..

Good idea for a thread Lawsy! Whilst your mathematical approach is most valid, my personal approach is "which reasonably priced car can be made into a reliable 12 second street car with minimum expenditure?" And the answers just gotta be the XR6T - especially with the last few weeks and that edit-only BF auto running 12.6. From my readings, other good bangs for buck include: LS1s and LS2 (and no doubt the LS76) now regularly run 12s with extractors, exhaust and tune only. Not bad value for less than $3k. There's a ute over here with cams as well as the above running 11s. The now discontinued supercharged V6 Ecowreck could be made into a low 14 second car with the simple and cheap ($600) addition of a smaller pulley on the supercharger, which increased boost to 8psi and still didn't require intercooling or other mods. that's good bang for bucks. Smaller pulleys and higher boost (10psi) required lower (?or is it higher?) ratio roller rockers, intercooling, PCM tune etc.. so it all became a bit pointless. Japanese turbos respond well to tunes, but as BCL said, because they're running quite high boost already, you really need to upgrade turbochargers etc... I think Nissan 200sx (Silvias) respond particularly well to the old zorst and chip, but not into 12 second territory. An unknown (to me anyway) is how well the Euro turbos respond to tunes only - like the Audi A4 Quattro Turbos, Golf Gti or even Polo Gti. They're well built to start with so they should be able to handle extra boost. Some guy has written into Wheels (April 06) I assume saying a tune only got his Polo Gti 155kw and 335Nm up from 110kw and 220NM. I don't know if its true, but if it is tune only , that's serious bang for bucks in an 1100kg car. However, I'm not sure if Ford knew what modification monster they were creating when they bolted on the Garret Gt35/40 rated to up to 700hp. Bang for Bucks, modding the XR6T would be hard to beat anywhere in the world I reckon! (I'm happy to be corrected on any of the above - no personal experience with these other cars - just what I've read) And Steve (XXXR6T) must have broken the world record for Bang for Bucks on Saturday with a 35% power increase for $900!

Steve - your mid range is amazing. From 110 to 155km hr in 4th your graph quite closely follows the Nizpro stage 2 sample they included on our graphs. A freakish result indeed!
-
that's a great result Steve. Its interesting how our graphs show similar curves with yours at a much higher power level across the board. I can see why our terminal speeds weren't up to our expectation on Wednesday night - see how sharply the power drops off quite early? (about 155km hr in 4th). Lowering AFRs and holding the power longer at higher revs will see you with an easy 110mph terminal speed. I'm interested to see anyone's comments on our AFRs, too ie how dangerous are they?- probably good feedback for CAPA. All in all, I'm happywith my 230rwkw, bit concerned with running lean and will probably book in for a custom tune in a week or two!

That would have to be Gonzo's XY, right?
-
Yeah - 13.52 @ 106

First thing I'd do is ring Mal Wood. Have also heard good things about the Extreme clutches on ebay for around $600. Maybe my 2.6 second 60 foot times, slow gear changes and mechanical sympathy aren't such a bad thing after all.......
-
It is. You're consistent Steve, so you could be competitive in the true street category. Question is, what will you dial in?
-
Reading the latest Wheels mag, it says the XR5T will start at $35 999. Now that's competitive and may even steal some waitlisted Golf GTi buyers. Heck - even I'm interested, particularly if Ford's national fleet discount is as generous as it id with Falcons!
-
Impressive Scott - well done! A question - once a fair number of properties are positive geared and you want to create a company to own them to reduce tax(if they've been personally owned prior) wouldn't that trigger a capital event and result in serious CGT issues? ie Can you transfer ownership from an individual to a company without adverse effects? Thanks Mark

-------------------------------- How have you found the Visco 5000? My Ford dealer said that Visco 5000 being 0W40 was to thin for the turbo and that it would cause it to burn oil. What does everyone think? Len <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I use Visco 5000 synthetic in my Subaru, but not my T. BP doesn't even recommend its use in the XR6T (check their website - they recommend their Visco 3000 15w -50 mineral oil).

Come to think of it, I only ever get this issue on my computer at work. Home is always fine. Could have something to do with the enhanced security at work and super dooper vlan router trusts continually re-establishing connections and verifying static IP addresses. (No I don't know what I'm talking about but sounds good, don't you think?). In a nutshell - maybe its server / router / firewall related?

Just to save any confusion put on of these --> after posts of this nature as some people struggle with subtle jokes! <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Yeah thanks - I see your point. Thought of the smiley, but then decided the "lay her eggs in it" was an obvious irony hence no smiley required. I was wrong
