  1. Problem solved. I'll leave out the evaporator box so the ECU can go under the dash.
  2. What was the reasons for it not working very well?
  3. A quick sketch to show what I mean. This should work shouldn't it?
  4. As the title implies, In a BA, which control units are connected to the CAN bus, and which two contain the 120ohm terminating nodes? I'm doing an engine conversion into a Maverick, so I'll only have the ECU and the DLC. I'm guessing its safe to say the ECU contains one node, and I think if I wire in another 120ohm resistor in parallel I should be sweet. Also, regarding flashing/ tuning, what wires are needed in the DLC? I'm guessing CAN-high, CAN-low, FEPS, + and -. Will I need the ISO/ K-line aswell?
  5. Yeah maybe you're right, I might just use the standard cat and play it safe. I'll check out the porting too. I was assuming it was a specialist job.
  6. I'd like to put it inside, but I don't have that much space inside the dash, and it's likely to get drowned at some point if I put it in the footwell. I was planning on putting it up high under the bonnet, but I'm just a bit worried about it getting splashed or dusty.
  7. Won't that be overkill? I thought the 044 for a high kw tune. How does the 044 compare the the stock pump?
  8. Can you elaborate a bit more? If I were to get it tuned at 10psi, it should stay pretty stable shouldn't it? Can't excessive exhaust flow/ lack of back pressure cause boost spikes? I thought that was the reason for porting the waste gate- to better balance the flow between the gate and turbine.
  9. I'm putting a BA Barra turbo into a Nissan Patrol. I have a factory FG manifold and dump pipe fitted, and will have a 3 inch exhaust fitted which wraps around under the sump, then will run down the passengers side of the car. My concern is, if I have a free flowing muffler and no cat, am I going to have turbo overspeed/ overboost issues? I don't really want to throw more money at it and get the gate ported. Should I expect to have issues with it before/ after I get it tuned? I'm not chasing huge power, it's a Patrol, not a drag car **My apologies if this is in the wrong section. I wasn't sure if this should be in the turbo or exhaust section.
  10. What is a suitable external fuel pump to use with a Barra turbo from a BA? I'm doing an engine conversion into a Nissan Patrol, and I think it will be easier to run an inline external pump. Should I use a surge tank too? Out of interest, are the stock fuel pumps (N/A vs. turbo) the same pump, or are they different? I'm planning on staying under 300kw. Also, what is the maximum safe limit for a tune on a stock motor with a 3 inch exhaust and bigger intercooler?
  11. Can someone please tell me if the BA ECU's are waterproof/ dustproof? I'm doing an engine conversion into a Nissan Patrol and need to know if the ECU will be safe if I mount it in the engine bay. I know they are in the engine bay on the Falcon, but Falcon's aren't really intended to go offroad.
  12. Does anyone know who makes this one?
  13. Hi, I'm trying to track down 2 items for my engine conversion. I'm putting a BA turbo engine into a Patrol and need a tacho interface to go from the BA wiring/ ECU to the Patrol's instrument cluster. I have 2 choices for the Patrol tacho; the petrol engine type is triggered by the old coil & points type ignition, the diesel engine is a pulse created by a revolution sensor (yet to scope the signal voltage). I also need to convert the Patrol's vehicle speed signal 10volt sine wave to the BA ECU's 0-5volt square wave. Can anyone suggest a suitable convertor for either?
  14. As the title suggests, how damaging is turbo flutter/ dosing? I've read a few threads trying to find an answer but found nothing. Found plenty of info on how to make it flutter though. I was lead to believe it is really bad for your turbo. True or not? I have bought a stock BA turbo with the factory bov return line thing capped off. I rather like the noise but I don't want to go damaging the turbo. I plan on getting a mild tune at some point too, if that makes it any worse.
  15. Fair enough, I hope I don't have to travel that far lol.
  16. How long would it be safe to drive without a tune? The main concern is a lack of local tuners (that I'm aware of) I know of one, but I don't know anything about their reputation (could be good, could be bad. I really don't know) I can still run the cat, it would just be further down the pipe (would be behind the gearbox/ transfer due to lack of space). I would also probably need to run a single 3 inch exhaust. I probably should mention I won't be raping it everytime I drive it like some people do. What does it cost to get the gate ported, and is it a critical thing to do in my circumstance? I don't suppose you have any photos of their exhaust setup do you? I'm sure you've noticed the Ford exhaust is on the same side as the Patrol's transfer & front prop shaft. I haven't seen how the lack of space is overcome yet.
  17. Why will it overboost without a cat? I thought the boost was ECU controlled via a solenoid.
  18. Long story short; I have bought a BA series 1 Barra turbo to put into a Nissan Patrol. I have to get the ECU flashed to make it a stand alone unit. I have been emailing a tuner about the ECU and have been informed that the BA engine is a 'grenade' particularly if you start modifying the exhaust before the cat and don't tune to compensate for it. Is this the case, or is he just trying to sell me a tune? I'm a mechanic and I know there will be issues if it's ridiculously modified without a tune, but how sensative are these engines to minor changes? I thought they were reasonably bullet proof. I won't be thrashing it. I'm building it for offroading and towing, so it needs to be reliable. I plan on running a stock BA engine & turbo, stock tune, and an FG exhaust manifold & dump pipe (due to space restrictions), and most likely a single 3 inch exhaust and probably no cat. So back to my question, Should I be worried about it being a grenade or not?
  19. I had a feeling it would. Now to find a stock FG manifold, dump pipe, and sump.
  20. Hi, I'm about to start an engine conversion (BA Barra into Maverick) and I might have to change turbo manifolds due to the Maverick having a massive steering box right beside where the turbo will be. What I want to know is, Will a custom steam pipe manifold increase performance/ hurt performance/ or make no differance over a stock cast iron manifold. I know I can use a stock FG manifold and fit a spacer plate between my steering box & chassis to gain clearance, but as always, I'm searching for the best option. I've attached a photo of the steam pipe manifold that I'm referring to. I'm just a bit concerned that the 'T' style joints will hurt performance. The upside of making that style manifold is the fact that I can mount the turbo as high or low, or as forward or rearward as I need to. PS, Let me know if the attached photo doesnt work.
  21. Hi, I'm about to start an engine conversion by putting a BA series 1 Barra turbo engine into my Maverick. Since it's going into an old Maverick I won't be needing the ABS, guage cluster, PATS & other control units etc. I'm after some suggestions for what would be the best/ most cost effective way to deal with the ECU. Sould I pay someone to do the work, or buy a hand held device (SCT type) and do it myself? I was thinking maybe I should get a more torquey tune, or should I just stick with the stock tune and delete the bits I don't need (PATS, ABS, etc) And what sort of cost should I expect? Thanks in advance...
  22. Would someone mind pointing me in the direction of wiring diagrams for a BA/BF? I've Googled, and searched this forum + other forums and can't find what I need. I'm after printable, or downloadable PDF ones. I know where to get ones that aren't downloadable or printable, but it's a bit inconvenient. More specifically, I'm after a pinout of the DLC if anyone has any info. I've got the BA workshop manual PDF, but the wiring diagrams seem to be missing. Also, does anyone have a contents/ index for the BA manual? Thanks
  23. I'm going to be putting a Barra into a Patrol as an upcomming project and just need to know if the stock XR6T flywheel (BA/BF) is solid or dual-mass? (Also, what do the N/A & E-gas have?) Does anyone know what they are selling for, new & used?, genuine & non genuine? Also does anyone know the diameter and the lining width of the N/A /E-gas/ Turbo stock clutch plates? Thanks
  24. I want a stand alone PCM (possibly 2-3 PCM's). I've been told there is 2 options of doing it with FMP. (1)FMP can be used to switch off certain parameters in the PCM which aren't needed in order to create a stand -alone. (2) If you have acces to a pre-tuned file, FMP can be used to flash it to the PCM. I'm possibly going down the wrong path, but I'm exploring all options. I don't like the regular flash tuners because from what I've read, they basically lock themselves to one PCM, or you have to buy additional licences for each PCM you want to flash.(I don't agree with that. If I own the machine, I expect it to do an infinite number of flashes) I don't mind paying for the software, as long as I don't have to buy additional licences for each PCM. I haven't looked into the HP tuners stuff yet. What's it like? Do you have to buy additional licences for each PCM? Also a question for Ralph.. When you buy the Bosch flasher, does it come with it's own Bosch software, or do you still have to use some sort of Ford software? Do you have any info for the software? software name? Know where I could download a manual? know where I could download a demo version? What settings can you actually adjust with it? I should also explain that I like to do the work myself. I'd prefer pay say $500 for the tools/ software needed, rather than pay someone $500 to flash it for me. I like to 'DIY' with everything.
