  1. It's all sorted now. It definitely was the phaser and solenoid. However as it turned out this wasn't the cause of the problem. They failed trying to compensate. The original problem was a mistake when the engine was put together. The timing was slightly out and hence the variable timing was compensating up until now. Once this failed the surge appeared due to the bad timing. And now that it is fixed, wow do I notice a difference. Goes so much harder.
  2. Hey guys, Now im assuming that the problem im about to describe could also present in other ways, and Im not the most knowledgeable about cars but I know enough to describe my problem in enough detail to help anyone else who presents with a similar issue. The reasoning im posting this is because I scowered these forums looking for an answer to my problem and couldn't find anything that worked. Also since fixing the issue, ive learnt that it has been pretty uncommon thus far. My car has just ticked over 100,000km so it may be something that shows itself as cars clock up more kms. In saying that, im sure this has also happened before in different ways, but this is my story. Car is 2008 G6ET with 100,000kms, no modifications. Also posted in g6et section but figured would be easier to find here. Also, I still recommend testing the easier and cheaper items first, such as coil packs, inlet manifold gaskets, fuel pumps and filters. Also sometimes just taking your car into ford or another decent mechanic to hook up a computer will get you on the right direction. However, this didn't work for us. Even fords computers couldn't pick the issue. Anyway, read below for how it presented. 1. Car started surging at idle after a short drive for no particular reason. Hadn't given it a squirt (on that particular drive), although at the time I only had the car a short time so had tested the waters a little bit. Turned it off, restarted, still surging, crapped myself (in that order). 2. Now when I say car surging, I mean a proper shaking of the engine, and hence the car, more noticeable when in drive for obvious reasons. RPMs were stable at 550-600rpms, although did hesitate slightly when throttle initially opened. Surge disappeared after about 1000rpm and hence drove relatively fine. No major loss in power that I noticed at the time. 3. Car didn't surge when cold. Took about 3-5 mins for car to start surging, which increased gradually over about 30secs to the point I was having nightmares about it. Important note. 4. Changing of simple stuff like coil packs, fuel filter, inlet manifold gasket (which did have a leak and bolts were loose) failed to make a difference. Answer: Variable cam timing solenoid and phaser (for me anyway) (exhaust) We did eventually get a computer code to show up (will chase up the actual code soon) which pointed us to the solenoid. We replaced it which didn't fix the problem. However when we placed the solenoid in another FG we got the code to come up. So replaced the phaser which stopped the timing issue and hence the surging. After my mate being on the phone to the engineers in Melbourne, we discovered that apparently, only one of the solenoid and four of the phasers have ever been sold by ford. Now this is what ford said, unsure of truth. However after posting this might find some others had the same issue. Now the reason the issue didn't arise when cold is because as many would know the solenoid and phaser work on oil pressure, hence become evident once the car warmed up. Hopefully this helps someone trying to diagnose their issue, if not rule one this possibility out.
  3. Alright guys, just another update. Part of the problem was the sensor but it was also the cam phaser cavity which is the part that actually does the adjusting of the timing. Apparently nothing could have caused it and it was just pure bad luck. My mate who fixed it indirectly knows some of the ford engineers in melbourne who helped him diagnose it. Apparantly there has only been 1 of the sensors sold and 4 of the phasers australia wide. Or visa versa. Not sure how true that is but what I was told. Anyway car is all good now. Bit of a long dragged out hassle but had some family members pass away in the process which slowed things down.
  4. I'd agree. That sounds like an awesome deal if they pay out your loan. Shop around for a better interest rate and then make the deal beat that too. Also make sure that the interest rate is fixed for the five years and there isnt any fees if you pay extra off. My interest rate is 8.48% fixed for life of loan, and I can pay it off with no fees. But if I want to withdraw the extra ive paid on it I can do that too. Which means I can pump my money into my loan to reduce the interest and if I need to withdraw any in an emergency its all good. Parking is simple, just reverse it everywhere, easy with the mirrors and reverse camera. Id also get an inspection on any used car. That way you can have things like brake pads, bushes, tyres and leaks checked and factor that into your budget.
  5. Just a bit of an update on the car. Taken it into to four different mechanics including ford, all who have had no idea and have suggested the obvious things like coil pack, fuel filter, manifold gasket among others. However we may have narrowed it down to the variable camshaft timing sensor as we have sporadically found this code come up on a couple diagnostic computers. Inspection of the sensor looks okay as it's not clogged up with thickened oil. But hopefully it's the solenoid on the inside which is playing up. Will keep the forum updated just incase someone has a similar issue.
  6. Yeah that's the plan! The engine light is back on now so would rather be safe than sorry. Ive got a spare car in the mean time so that's why I didnt go running to pay the 88bucks. Just frsutrating. Hence my looonggg and worried posts lol.
  7. This sounds like my issue at the moment. Fine at cold starts and then after 3-5 mins starts to shudder quite hard and miss. Getting a computer on it tonight so might give me some answers. Throttle body wouldnt cause any misses though would it? Just a rough idle.
  8. 1. Wish I lived near you guys because the ford is charging 88bucks to hook the computer up, and then even more to tell me what the problem is. Why waste the money on that when my mate who is a qualified mechanic was 90% sure it was the ignition coil. A part which ive been told is a common problem with the new falcons. The only downside is ive spent 50bucks and now have a spare ignition coil for the lifetime of the car that I can use if need be. 2. Shyfrd no idea what your referring to, I did paste the exact some questions under another heading but it was deleted, which must of been because I posted it twice. Mainly because I was unsure where to post it. But that happened straight after I posted it so you cant be referring to me. But otherwise thanks for stating the obvious and being absolutely no help at all. Obviously going to take it to ford if cant get an answer. But my mates bringing home the computer from his work tonight so hopefully will give us some answers.
  9. Okay so I've replaced the ignition coil and still idling rough! Any ideas? I'm getting a mate to bring home a diagnostic computer tomorrow night from his work to see what the computer says because the engine light is back on now. Hopefully his computer is alright and points us in the right direction. Until then I'll be in a sh*t mood
  10. Okay think I've discovered the issue. Cylinder 6s coil pack which as I've found out through mates is a common issue with the fords. Off to grab a new one tomorrow and hopefully confirm that it's the issue. However there is a notable increase in misfiring when I disconnect coils 1-5 but number 6 hardly no change at all. So should be right on the money. Any ideas on why it would be okay in the first couple of minutes whilst cold and then start to misfire. I also thought that if it was a coil pack it would misfire whilst under load in higher revs.
  11. Thanks for the info. Yeah its weird how its fine until after 3-4mins in and then it starts to idle rough. Something electroincal for sure. I'll take it to ford on monday and probably pay through the nose. Gonna try something simple today myself if I can
  12. Ah good. I got my mum to ring whilst I was at work this morning. I'll go in there myself and suss it during the week. Thanks!
  13. Update: Just called the bro after reconnecting the battery. Again, first 3-4mins were fine with no shudder and now the engine light has turned off. After 3-4mins the shudder started again. No problem at higher revs. Engine light hasnt come back on yet after going around the block for 4-5 mins at different speeds.
  14. Hey Guys, Got the G6ET just over a week ago now and have done about 1000kms since (Soccer traveling and missus is a 60km round trip). Has all been good and have fallen in love with it. No problems at all until now. Recently serviced by the dealer and underwent an MTA inspection in NSW which passed fine. However, last night took a mate who hadnt seen it yet for a drive. Gave it a lil bit but nothing major or prolonged and everything went okay... However, pulled back up in the driveway and notice a little bit of a shudder at low revs, kind of sounds like its misfiriing but im a massive noob so not really sure. The engine light didnt come on initially but after about 1km of test driving it at low speeds it now has. I left it overnight last night, started first thing this morning and it went fine for first 3-4 mins. (engine light still on) but then began to miss/shudder again. Almost as if something in the electronics clicked over. My noob thoughts in no particular order: 1. Something simple like a plug or coil pack? 2. Engine in limp mode since putting the footdown a bit and causing overboost for some reason. 3. Something else to do with giving it a squirt. 4. Vacuum hoses, although had a quick look and cant see or feel any splits. It drives fine at higher revs, can really only notice it at idle. Tried to get it into ford today but being a saturday they cant check it until Monday. I know they will try slog me for a diagnostics test as well. Ive gotten my brother atm to disconnect the battery at home for a while and just see if that resets any electronics. However im at work atm so cant see results of that til later. In the mean time im gonna try avoid driving as much as I can until it can be checked. On a further note, any South Australians know a good ford or general mechanic who could do a diagnostic check without slogging too much. My understanding is its a 2min test which they will try slog u 88bucks for, + more if u want them to ring and say what it is! BS if u ask me. It is still under 3 months warranty from the dealer, however I got it from NSW so not sure if id have to take it back up there or if its unreasonable for them to make me do that. If anyone has any idea about this also would be good. Sorry for long post :/ Thanks in advance Add Reply Quote MultiQuote Edit Blog This
  15. Thanks guys, I did consider asking about potential upgrades but because im getting it from interstate I figured id just try suss it once its down here. And thanks I'll definitely suss the poorboys gear. Excited to drive one of these beasts
  16. Hey guys, Great forum on here. Been reading on/off for a couple of weeks now. Just bought my first ford after finally finishing uni and being able to afford a decent car. Shopped around for a while but decided that the G6ET was exactly what I was looking for. Paid for it this week from a dealer in NSW, should get shipped down here (SA) by mid/late next week. Black with the cashmere interior. Hopefully it looks as good in person as it does in the pics. Ive had an MTA inspection on it which came back practically perfect so I now its in good nick Couple of questions. Ive had a bit of a search on here but being a forum noob can't find much. 1. Any suggestions on the best way to keep the interior leather/carpet clean and protected. Which products and brands have you guys found that works best. 2. Is their a way to upgrade to have the Sat-Nav system. Either as an aftermarket add on, or going back through ford? :/ 3. Also has anyone put in DVD players in the back of the cars, either as a drop down screen on in the back of the headrests? Once the cars here I'll chuck some photos up, but basically its stock standard 08 model. Cheers. Sam
