John Cunliffe to test Funny Car @ Calder Park It is now confirmed that John Cunliffe will test and tune his AA/FC 2000 Pontiac Firebird at the Calder Park Re Opening LOSD / Street Series meeting on Sunday 7th September 2008. The car has a 540ci Merlin pro motor with a tbs 14/71 hi helix blower on methanol. The car runs a Lenco drive and 9 1/2 full floater rear end. Sean Mullins built the car and the body is a 2000 Pontiac Firebird. The injection is all enderle and flowed for approx 2100-2200hp at this tune. John will run in supercharged outlaws and AA/FC for the first season and then in Top Alcohol next year. They have a new spare Carbon Fibre Body and a BAE -5 sitting in the shed for next year when they decide to step it up. John says he is really looking forward to having a local track again so they can compete with interstate teams that have the convenience of testing at their local tracks without towing 10+ hours just to try a new setup. Calder Park Spring/summer Street Series 08/09
SLY LS1 replied to SLY LS1's topic in Drag and Circuit Racing
Ok here is a few updates and info to clear some of the questions up.. This series will be run in conjunction with the normal Legal Off Street Drag Meetings, so for those that do not want to compete or cars than do not meet the street series rules you can race as per normal in the LOSD Engineers Certificate will be required 1. If the original engine the car came with has been replaced with bigger engine that was not an option on the model vehicle. 2. If the supercharger/s or turbocharger/s were not factory fitted or an option on that model. 3. If the rear chassis or rear wheel tubs have been altered in any way other than factory specifications. That is all for the engineering side of things. Tyres Must be radials with tread! NO SLICKS M/T ET Drag Radails are approved, so if you have any doubts they would be your best choice. Other items that ARE approved NOS - may be used but you must run in the blown class, even if you have only NOS lines fitted but no bottle, you still must run in the blown class. Roll Cages - any vehicle running quicker than 11.00 MUST have an approved roll cage. Anyone can have a roll cage fitted as long as it has the required protective padding! Wheels - no restrictions Open Exhausts - no restrictions Diff Changes - no restrictions other than chassis and wheel tub rules as above. Transmission - no restrictions All competitor must meet the general Calder Park saftey regulations which you can find at the link below http://www.calderpark.com.au/losd_regulations.shtml Legal Off Street Drags & Sping/Summer Street Series Hours Of Racing will be Saturdays Gates open 10.00 am 10.00 am to 6.00 pm – Scutineering (approximately) 12.00 noon to 5.00 pm - Qualifying for street categories 12.00 noon to 5.30 pm - Legal Off Street Open Racing 5.30 pm to 6.00 pm - Dinner Break & Seeding 6.00 pm to 10.00pm Finals & Grudge Racing Presentations 10.15 pm Sundays Gates open 10.00 am 10.00 am to 4.00 pm – Scutineering (approximately) 12.00 noon to 5.00 pm - Qualifying for street categories 12.00 noon to 5.30 pm - Legal Off Street Open Racing 5.30 pm to 6.00 pm - Dinner Break & Seeding 6.00 pm to 8.00 pm [approx] Finals & Grudge Racing Presentations 8.15 am Presentation To be held on the start line at the conclusion of each meet Trophies for "Best presented Car & Bike" each round Trophies for "quickest Reaction Time" each round Prize Money & Trophy will be awarded to winner & runner-up in each category each round Winner in each category each round will be awarded 10 points Runner-up in each category each round will be awarded 5 points The competitor with the most points at the end of the spring-summer series will be awarded the following prizes: King of the Hill trophy and sponsors prizes AMC Membership for one year 5 Free Entries for the next season Their name on the AMC Calder Park Website Round results will be posted on this page after each round http://www.calderpark.com.au/losd_street_s...s_results.shtml Points Top Ten in each category will be posted on this page after each round http://www.calderpark.com.au/losd_street_s...standings.shtml Entry & Saftey forms These forms are available for download from the website, to save yourself and everyone else time we ask that you please download them and fill them in before you arrive. I will have some big news to post later tonight for all the off street "street car" drag racers

Drag Racing Back To Calder Park With a Bang! A new strip, new spectator facilities and undying passion for a spectacular sport will see . . . Story by STEVE THOMAS CALDER PARK’S introduction to the sight, sound and spectacle of Drag Racing came in April, 1966, when a team of six American drivers brought their supercharged dragsters to Australia for a tour of the strips at Calder Park, Surfers Paradise and Castlereagh in Sydney. This was the First Australian Drag Fest and featured two nitro-methane burning AA/Fuel Dragsters and four methanol burning AA/Gas Dragsters. Unfortunately, their first meeting, which was at Calder, was a bit of a flop, when it was found that there was no nitro available for the two fuel cars. Other problems were encountered throughout the day. As the 1960s and 70s progressed, Calder Park became one of the country’s best tracks and many of the sport’s biggest names were Victorians. Calder Park in its heyday. Fast-forward to the 1990s and Calder Park hosted the prestigious Australian Nationals for many years and tens of thousands of fans from across the country would descend on the track for the annual event. In its heyday the track saw many National records set and many National Champions crowned. More recently, Calder Park has been the home of Legal Off-Street Drags, but has been unable to host full Championship racing, due in part to the stringent safety requirements set by ANDRA, the sport’s governing body. Cars like this are driven straight off the street and into the legal action of Off Street Drag Racing! Picture: Wild2Mild One of the main safety features required of drag strips is that concrete barriers must run the full length of both sides of the track, including the braking area. With Top Fuel Dragsters currently producing around 8,000 horsepower and covering the quarter mile in 4.5 seconds at speeds well over 500 km/h, these concrete barriers are all that stand between a car and the spectators when something goes wrong. During the 1995-2000 heyday, crowds of up to 90,000 attended Calder Park's two-day National Drag Meets - facilities are even better now with terraced seats on the embankment. Picture: Steve Thomas Shut Down for Upgrade With this in mind, Calder will be shutting down during July and August so that many improvements and upgrades can be implemented, thus bringing the facility up to the level required to be able to showcase Drag Racing in every form, from Off-Street through the various brackets of Sedans, Dragsters and Altereds, right up to the sport’s ultimate classes, including nitro-burning Bikes, Doorslammers, Funny Cars and Top Fuellers. A typical Friday night Legal Off Street Drags crowd – ready for fun and with plenty of officials to help them get it. Picture: Wild2Mild The barriers are to be moved in so there will no longer be grass edges along the strip, as these can often be more detrimental to a wayward vehicle than when it is kept within the confines of the concrete barriers. The Start line will also be moved 14 metres further down the straight, thus giving more room for the staging lanes and burnout area, and a new timing tower will be built alongside the starting area, angled at fifteen degrees to the track to afford tower officials an uninterrupted view of the entire strip. Drag Racing originated in the USA and so the internationally accepted standard for speeds in the sport is Miles per Hour, even though nearly everywhere else uses km/h. This being the case, the new timing boards at Calder Park will register the speeds in mph and, depending on cost, they may give readings in both mph and km/h, thus keeping us old blokes and the new crop of younger spectators happy! This high-speed blow-up illustrates the need for concrete barriers. It’s hard enough to control 8000 bhp when all goes right – but when it goes wrong, the results can be catastrophic!. Steve Thomas Pic Special Attention to Spectators The spectator mound is currently receiving major attention and seating will eventually be put right down the eastern side of the strip and around the back of the burnout area, thus allowing up to 35,000 spectators to sit and watch in comfort. In an effort to give racers and spectators an input into the racing, track management conducted a survey on 22 different forums and has used the results to plan their meetings. The results showed that families preferred the meetings to be held during the days, as this was better for the kids and for travelling and that Friday nights were not good for off street drags, as this was the worst night for traffic on Melbourne’s roads. Terraced embankments 20m wide line the back straight of the race circuit, offering great views of the whole Drag Strip from the comfort of car or tailgate. Accordingly, when the drag strip re-opens in September the Legal Off Street Drags will take place on Sundays and from the 8th November racing will be held on Saturdays – of course, with an eye on the weather, check your Calendar and Calder Park’s website - http://www.calderpark.com.au Calder Park’s Legal Off Street Drags have been proving very popular in a city craving for the return of full-blown drag racing, with over 180 cars entering each of the events in May. At the first May meeting, 20 full competition cars were entered in order to do some testing and tuning in readiness for Australia’s biggest Drag Meet of the year, the Winternationals. Do it Off the Street Legal Off Street Drag Racing is exactly that – legal, safe and on the track, not on the streets. Cars must be roadworthy and can drive to the track and race, providing the driver is licensed, has an approved crash helmet, long sleeves, shoes and socks. It’s the perfect way for mates to find out who has the quickest car, no-one gets hurt and it costs a hell of a lot less than a fine and the risk of having your vehicle impounded by the Police. The drag strip surface is prepped with traction compound the day before every Off Street meet, exactly as it is for full competition meetings, so even the street cars get maximum traction and many of the regular racers are regularly re-setting their personal best times. The Legal Off Street Drags are aimed at encouraging drivers, especially the younger ones, to race in a safe environment and not on the streets. The drag strip is also capable of being used as a venue for driver training programmes, two much needed ways of attempting to educate drivers and hopefully help to reduce our road toll. Classes to be included in the AMC Nationals series will be Pro Street Blown, Pro Street Unblown, Modified Street, Real Street, Super Gas and two Bike brackets. Prize money for these meetings is still to be finalised. Most classes will be run on the “dial-your-own” system and the Bikes will be run in two brackets based on qualifying times, those being for Bikes running 9.99 seconds and quicker and the other being for those running between 10.00 and 14.99 seconds. In the dial your own system, the driver nominates the time he expects to be able to run, based on his qualifying time, and the start is handicapped so that the vehicle with the slower time leaves first. In theory, if both cars have an identical reaction time off the line, and both run their exact dial-in, then the race will be a tie across the finish line. In other words, slower vehicles have as much chance of winning as the quicker vehicles. The class that will differ from this format is Super Gas, which is for cars that race on a fixed index of 9.90 seconds. There is no handicapping at the start, so the cars take the green light together and first to the finish line wins, providing you don’t go quicker than 9.90 seconds. If you do, you’re disqualified and your opponent takes the automatic win! Adelaide in New Year It is also expected that Adelaide Raceway will re-open its Drag Racing program late in 2008 – its major resurfacing project having been thwarted by wet weather - and its format will mirror that of Calder Park, thus giving the race-starved South Aussies a place to race as well. With both Melbourne and Adelaide having operational strips again, drag racing will once again become a truly National sport. Bob Jane and the AMC are pulling out the stops in an effort to bring Calder Park Drag Racing back to its glory days by improving safety and comfort at what is the world’s fastest all-bitumen drag strip. This in turn should see Drag Racing make its long-awaited and spectacular return to one of the strongest racer bases in the country. Calder Park’s race calendar for the new season is now: Most Saturdays from 8th November – Legal Off Street Drags. Australia Day, 2009 – Round 1 of the AMC Nationals. 14th February – Round 2 of the AMC Nationals. 11th April – Round 3 of the AMC Nationals.
