  1. Well that will be a nice feeling. I'll be sure to post an update once I get her back and take her for a drive. Cheers to everyone that has replied to this by the way. Has been helpful.
  2. Is better that 3K. And is closer to the $1500 they first said. Plus will have it back by Tuesday or so. I am hoping that after all this there MIGHT be a bit more performance out of it. I am sure you lot are better judge than I at making that call.
  3. Update: The housing is fine, so it is being machined, new core, gaskets, this and that checked or flushed out, time to take it out and put it back in will be $1950.
  4. Cheers mate. I appreciate that. I will PM you.
  5. My concern there would be it has had the guts kicked out of it already. So if anything I would rather go with a proper re-built one.
  6. Thanks mate. I just spoke to a mate who is more mechanical minded than I am, and he said to have them take it out, and if they say the housing is stuffed, which he said he thinks would be hard to do, then go up and have a look at it and take the turbo to someone near me. I live on southside of Brisbane. There are a few shops around here that deal in Turbo stuff. So if I can I will get them to rebuild it or something. To take it out and assess it he said $180 as will take him about 2 hours. What is classified as near you? and do you feel them a reputable source for it? As said above, I am southside in Brisbane. I appreciate it though, don't get me wrong. It could be a go-er if I need it. So thanks. Haven't had a look at these, no. Honestly didn't know about them, except for checking Gumtree. Thanks.
  7. Fair point. I am trying to get this done in a short time span, which I know makes this harder. I don't mean to seem like I am expecting the world. So I guess I will just have to wait til tomorrow when he takes it apart and gets back to me. The only other concern I have is them still just turning around and saying the whole thing needs to be replaced when the housing is fine. I don't really trust mechanics around here, so.
  8. He k31th. Thanks for the links, mate. Can you quickly analyse something for me. Or anyone else here. I just spoke with the mechanic and I asked if the housing was still fine. His reply was "With the sound it was making it sounds like it is rooted. We won't know til we take it apart if you like. When we heard the sound we were told to just quote on the whole turbo replacement. But we can take it apart and have a look if you like, but fair chance the housing is rooted. If it isn't we can possibly put a new core in it" So, what are the chances of the housing being stuffed? I have driven the car around 3 times since it started making that sound, when I first heard it it did it for a little and went away. So I knew I had something there to check. Next time it was a bit louder, and I gave the car a kick in the guts as a test of sorts. Last time it was driven was pretty much to the mechanic which is about 600m away from where I live. Surely the housing is a resilient item. How would one be able to tell if the housing was screwed? I almost feel like the mechanic is having a lend of me considering it was simply "just quote the replacement" instead of giving me options til I mentioned the core itself. Also, is anyone able to link on ebay to a decent housing if I am to source one myself. Thanks.
  9. Okay, I will steer clear of that one then. I will keep looking. There are a few others but the price seems too reasonable. $500 - http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Ford-Falcon-BA-BF-XR6T-Turbo-FPV-CHRA-Cartridge-Core-For-Garrett-GT3582R-GT3540R-/182119342407?hash=item2a6728a147:g:tx8AAOSwn9lXKltl $315 (very cheap) - http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Ford-Falcon-BA-BF-XR6T-Turbo-FPV-CHRA-Cartridge-Core-For-Garrett-GT3582R-GT3540R-/201303114111?hash=item2ede99c17f:g:aZcAAOSw7FRWYlq0
  10. Sounds like I would rather avoid it then. I am looking on ebay. Keep in mind I am not mechanical minded so yeah. I know to look for garrett turbo. But working out what is good and what isn't I don't know. Along with the one I was looking at being very specific in that it needs their own fitting kit? http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Ford-XR6-Turbocharger-BA-BF-Typhoon-Garrett-GT35R-Turbo-gt3540-t3-t4-billet-/111979577970?hash=item1a1280c272:g:C8IAAOSwPhdVLaDk Or is this another option: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Ford-Falcon-BA-BF-XR6T-Turbo-FPV-CHRA-Cartridge-Core-For-Garrett-GT3582R-GT3540R-/201303114111?hash=item2ede99c17f:g:aZcAAOSw7FRWYlq0
  11. Thanks for the advice. Is there any way for the turbo to be removed and the car driven without it for awhile til I can come up with the money to replace it properly? Or does it simply not work like that.
  12. Unsure, he just said the whole Turbo unit is shot. Ball bearings, this and that. Said any lines would need to be flushed to make sure something hadn't gotten into the engine or some such. Either way I am looking at 3K...
  13. Just heard back from the mechanic. Said the whole turbo is shot, housing blah blah etc. Said to get the turbo kit put in, lines flushed etc and labour would be looking at $3000 edit: With how old the car is, I am trying to work out if it is worth it. 3K is more than what it could probably be sold for.
  14. She is up at the mechanics today. Now to play the waiting game.
  15. Car has only ever been stock.
