  1. I think most people remove the bottom studs from the manifold, no need to take the bracket/support off then. From memory(all bad !) the heat shield is held on with a clip similar to those used to retain wheels on axles (on toy bikes etc) ,force it off or should unscrew if you can access it. I lost the plot and ripped the crap out of the heat shield , should have enquired about the price first, ended up removing the studs anyway.
  2. I could be mistaken but I am pretty sure that this is what the manufacturer is telling you to do. I only went down this path because I was having issues. When you consider that the vast majority of the time your engine revs would be under 2000 (prior to fitting a restrictor hot pressure was 45psi @2000), I don't think that higher pressure at higher revs is a problem, I don't think you can damage the seals. From what I have read providing oil is not getting past the seals you have nothing to worry about, but if (like me) oil is evident a restrictor might help. With ball bearing turbos Garrett do not appear to have any interest in flow rate only pressure prior to the turbo, it is my understanding they need very little oil to operate.
  3. I fitted a braided in line filter kit to an FG, oil was getting past the turbo seals. 1mm restrictor fitted in the line dropped the pressure to recommended levels, no more problems with oil past the seals. Obviously not happening to everyone.
  4. From what I have been told by Garrett (it is also on their website) the oil pressure should not be higher than 45 PSI upstream of the turbo . I am pretty sure that all Garrett ball bearing turbochargers have a built in restrictor, according to them it would appear you need to fit a restrictor in the line if the pressure is too high.
  5. Search Garrett FAQ, " Does my turbo require an oil restrictor". I recently spoke to someone from Garrett, he told me that there is a maximum recommended oil pressure to the turbocharger before the inbuilt restrictor.
  6. How can it restrict to a known pressure if it doesn't know what the supply pressure is ? According to Garrett you need 40-45 before the turbocharger, clearly people are running much higher pressure with no obvious issues.
  7. According to Garrett maximum oil pressure to the turbocharger is 40 to 45 PSI, the built in restrictor is not there to achieve this. So if you go by what they recommend you would have to put a restrictor in the line because your oil pressure is going to be way more than 45 PSI. Has anyone ever measured the oil supply pressure with the factory screen in place?
  8. Would anyone be able to tell me the torque settings when fitting an FG turbocharger . I realise I probably won't be be able to access some/all of the nuts/studs with a torque wrench, after settings for turbo to dump pipe and turbo to manifold. Thanks
  9. I have a stock 2012 F6 auto, vast majority of driving is in the suburbs. I have checked the consumption a couple of times by filling up and checking distance travelled, been around 17l/100kms. I always have it in performance mode, don't dawdle but certainly not hammering it. I know the consumption figures provided by manufacturers are obtained by bench tests but from what I have read generally in real world driving people struggle to achieve the published mileage. Correct me if I am wrong but I think Ford quote the urban cycle for turbos/F6 as being around 18l/100km which is around what I am getting. So many people seem to be using around 12l/100km around town, I have to ask how, can there be such massive difference from one car to the next?
  10. Thanks Ralph Wiggum Took me a while but I think I figured out what you mean. Are you saying you leave the "H" bracket bolted to the engine mount/block and remove the lower two manifold to turbo studs ? Can you then remove the turbocharger and manifold as a unit ? Thanks

I am trying to remove the turbocharger off a 2002 XR6, I am having a problem and have not been able to find an answer on forums etc. My car has the support bracket that is attached to the engine(engine mount?) and also the lower two studs where the turbocharger is bolted to the exhaust manifold. To remove the turbocharger the bracket has to be unbolted from the engine, my problem is I can't access the the bolt closest to the rear because the engine mount heat shield is covering it. Does anyone know how to remove the engine mount heatshield ? Thanks

    Vac Leak

    My stock BA had low vacuum at idle, accidentally found the reason was the blow off valve, leaky diaphragm. After I disconnected vacuum line to bov manifold vacuum went from 14" to 21".
