Hey long time reader, first time poster. My name is Mick and I've recently turned to the dark side after selling my LS1 Statesman. I now have a Black BA Jan 2004 XR6 Turbo and I'm working my way through fixing the crap the previous owner had done. So here is my welcoming present, a guide to painting the gear shifter surround in an Auto, which after all the threads/posts I've read wasn't the biggest pain in the ass job I've had to tackle. Lets begin. XR6 Turbo For whatever reasons, the previous owner created this monstrosity of a gear shifter surround. And under closer inspection... Pull up the Gear Shifter surround plate and then work your way around all the screws that you can. The cup holder will just pull straight out (Upwards) with a bit of a tug. Unplug the cable into the back of the cigarette lighter adapter. The back air-vents are held in with 2 screws and 2 push-in connectors, so it comes out easily. Hamish and Andy will get you through this job in now time. Now it was too hard to get a shot, but I will explain how I got the gear shifter surround out. Make sure its completely unbolted, as well as the bolts either side of the seats near the carpet - just put the seats forward and unscrew. I pulled at the open section where the rear air vents were which got the centre console lower section to pop up then using pulled on the two plastic sections either side of the Hand Brake. This gives you around 1" to 1 1/2" of space to squeeze the gear shifter surround out. I had to change the position of the gear shifter a few times, finally getting it out by pushing it far enough forward to for the surround to slip past the the hard plastic section closer towards the handbrake, you kinda need to push with your thumbs as to get it past (milimetres to spare) and then its just a case of wiggling out from the top. *Note I did not have to remove the whole console, it was a bit of a pain to get out, but its completely achievable, this was my second attempt. This is the gear shifter surround bottom section which squeezes out and holds in the PRND plastic piece. *Note it does come out so you can paint the surround without worrying about masking tape. You can see that the previous owner didn't even let the damn thing dry, leaving red (possibly left over caliper paint) everywhere! So I started by sanding back the red paint using 200 grit sand paper, just working as much of the paint as possible. Preparation was the key to my project and I think I roughly spent about an hour on this process which came up great! I used touch up paint which colour was closely matched to the existing shifter surround and my wife though it looked good. First Coat. 2-3 coats at this point... Lightly sanding any high spots or drips etc using 600 grit sand paper wet/dry. These were the products I used Finished product after using 2-3 light coats of the clear lacquer then leaving overnight to harden. The next morning I applied about 2-3 coats of Maguiars Techwax which removed a little bit of the orange peel and gave it a really good shine.
