  6. I reckon my BA auto (stock) has the irregular tapping sound in the second vid, and has done for the 2.5 years that I've had it. Listening through a screwdriver, it is loudest in the belt/idler/pulley area. It hasn't gotten any worse in that time. It only makes the noise once the engine is warm. I told my mechanic about it, he thought it was the idler pulley and didn't seem to worried about it.
  7. In my experience, it's quite normal for the turbine to continue spinning for about 20 seconds after the engine has been switched off. If my car is up to operating temp when switched off, the sound is barely audible. If the engine and turbo are cold when switched off, it sounds somewhat rougher/louder which is also apparently normal. If the sound is a grinding noise as opposed to a free spinning noise there may be issues. The turbine should spin freely by hand. The middle of the turbo is essentially a shaft with a fan either end with a bearing pack in the middle. Watch this vid from about 3:30 to see what I mean The bearing pack in the middle is the part will usually fail, which can eventually damage the intake and/or exhaust housing. The main culprit usually being a clogged filter in the turbo oil feed line. If your turbo is found to be stuffed you must check/remove/replace this filter or you will quickly damage the new turbo. You'll find a million threads in this section about this issue. I had the filter removed and had ETM's replacement oil feed line installed for peace of mind. http://www.fordxr6turbo.com/forum/Replacement-Turbo-Oil-Feed-Line-t45049.html&p=668494&hl=replacement%20oil%20feed%20line&fromsearch=1#entry668494 I would think you would need to bring the entire turbo over for assessment. Another thing to check is to see how much play the turbine shaft has by grabbing the nut on the intake side and wiggling side to side and in/out. A millimetre or so side to side should be ok, but movement in/out can be a sign of trouble. To answer your other questions: The stock BF turbo is Garrett GT35/40r, and you could replace it, or they can usually be rebuilt to save money if not too badly damaged. I'm not sure about suppliers/reconditioners in the Melbourne area, hopefully someone here can recommend one.
  8. Hi all, I've been lurking here since I jumped across from the dark side to the blue oval camp about a year ago. I had been dead set on buying a v8 but the wealth of info and stories in this forum helped sway me at the last minute from buying an ss Late model camira to buying the xr6t. I have a 04 BA XR6T in mercury silver and it's been awesome except for one minor annoyance. The paint on the external door handle surround has flaked off down to the white plastic underneath in a few places (about the size of a pea). I'm just wondering if anyone knows the best course of action for such a small repair. Does the handle insert just pop out and can it be replaced? Or is it just as easy and cheap to get it professionally touched up? I'll try to post photos asap. Thanks guys.
  9. I have noticed this on my 04 BA. We were wondering where all the black stains had come from on the hood lining of the babies pram. Then I noticed that the stains are where it makes contact with the boot carpet. I haven't had a close look at it yet, at least the boot in the xr6t isn't a mouldy swamp like my old commodore.
  10. Hi Octane6, I've got a similar thing going on with my 2004 BA XR6T, clacking/tapping/chattering which is reasonably quiet but annoying. I can hear it the loudest through the front grill. I could've sworn it was coming from the timing case area, but the screwdriver stethoscope tells me its the idler pulley. Apparently its common, there are a couple of other posts about it.
