  1. I think you probably did a burnout, making undue noise, after failing to come to a complete stop at a fixed traffic sign (which would also get you a neg driving charge) then failed to give way whilst speeding down the road with your fog lights on. But it wouldn’t let me select more than one option.

  4. It's strange, isn't it. You stand in the middle of a library and go 'Aaaaaaagghhhh' and everyone just stares at you. But you do the same thing on an aeroplane, and everyone joins in.
  5. Where's Kent ?............ah yeah dirt ........... That's right. Dirt road - Ken won't be there. Bet you looked for a while though.
  6. And here is a 10 watt HID
  7. I have been interested in the new High Intensity Discharge (HID) lights for a while because of my interest in mountain biking. HIDs are MUCH more efficient, which means a better light from a lighter battery. I found this comparison between HIDs and normal lights. Perhaps Trumpy can take similar before and after photos when he does his trial. The camera is mounted on a tripod and set to full manual mode, without changeing settings between shots. The bike is about 30m away. Here is a normal 12 watt light.

  9. I sometimes use a bit of left foot braking in either manual or auto to correct the balance of the car in a corner. I had to drive standard Commodores as company cars for many years and the body roll in some corners was very scary. I found it better to use a bit of left foot brake as you started the corner. This would induce the body roll right at the start of the corner, and then you could maintain power through the corner. It used to scare me if you were half way through a corner and then had the balance of the car changeing because of the roll. The other situation I left foot brake is just say you’re in a corner and you’re fairly hard on the power and you see a problem in the road ahead, pothole, a bit of gravel, whatever. Now if you just lift off the throttle and brake it can really upset the balance of the car, especially as you hit the obstacle. I tend to partially lift-off the throttle and use my left foot on the brake to wash off a little speed, but not enough to upset the balance.
  10. I think the tissues are provided to help you with brake shudder and drive-line shunt. As long as they left those standard features out too I wouldn't complain.
  11. Are the pedals any different to AU? I have an auto T but had a manual AUII XR8 and don’t remember having any problems. In fact I have owned 8 previous manual cars (the T being the first auto I have ever owned) and have heel & toed every one of them. But don’t just blip the throttle, it is better to double clutch – clutch in, change to neutral, clutch out, blip throttle, clutch in, select next gear, clutch out. It can take a bit of getting used to but if you persevere, eventually it becomes second nature and the gear changes are much better. I even drove a hired van helping a friend move the other week and after she returned it to the hire place she had a go at me because I didn’t tell her you had to double shuffle to change down gears. I replied that I didn’t know you had to, I just drive like that anyway.

  13. Zap Congrats on the immenent delivery of your model T, it's ben a long time coming for us too. I understand you just accepting the wheels as part of the deel. Sometimes it's not worth the hassle, and if you feel you got a good deal overall, well that's the main thing. I don't think you got deliberately ripped off. More likely the salesman didn't know what he was talking about. That wouldn't be unusual. Hope to see you on a cruise one day - hopefully Bathurst.
  14. I think too much importance is given to 0-100 and 400m times. I would rather drive a car that is a bit slower but is a bit more about the passion of driving than a souless car that accelerates well. For example my alfa 147 is slower (0-100) than a Camry sportivo but I know which one I would rather drive. It's all about driver involvement, the way you feel, etc. As long as the car as aimed at the driving enthusiest, I'll give it a go. I can understand why guys love their V8s, even if they're not quite as fast as the T6.
  15. Could it be speed limiter related somehow?
  16. Is that the petrol tank he's welding??
  17. OK, I am a layperson giving an explanation. Torque is more important to gearboxes than power, but the two are related. Going back to basic physics Power = Work / Time. The Torque is the work component. Work = Force x Distance (ie Nm). Therefore the power output is dependant on the torque being produced and the RPMs (the time part of the power equation). Torque is more important to gearboxes because it is the 'instantaneous' component of power. It is how much force is being applied, regardless of how fast the engine is turning. If you know how much torque is being made you can calculate the power being produced with the following equation. Power (kW) = (Torque (Nm) x rpm x 0.105 ) / 1000 So with a standard XR6 T making 450Nm from 2000 rpm to 4500 rpm you get perfectly linear power (in theory). 450 x 2000 x 0.105 / 1000 = 94.5kW at 2000rpm 450 x 3000 x 0.105 / 1000 = 141.75kW at 3000rpm 450 x 4000 x 0.105 / 1000 = 189kW at 4000rpm And with peak power of 240kW at 5250 rpm there must be 435 Nm being produced at that point 435 x 5250 x 0.105 / 1000 = 239.8kW This is my understanding of the relationship between Torque and Power. I am sure there are more technical explanations but I know you like to see numbers and formulas Dr Z.
  18. Do we need to bring reserve drivers or do we spit out the tasted wine in traditional fashion ?? If you include Petersons (in the Mount View area) on your tasting itinerary you can use their free breath test analyzer thing.
  19. I don't know of any way over the mountains other than the Great Western or Bell's Line. There are a couple of sections where you can avoid the highway for a while though. There is a road from just west of Katoomba to just east of Leura called Cliff Drive that is not a bad run if you don't get stuck behind a tour bus. This is possibly the road you are thinking of. (Mountain edges - Cliff Drive ?) There is also a back way from west of Wentworth Falls down to Lawson but this is not a good drive. It is usually only used by locals to avoid bumper to bumper traffic on the highway but there is a section of about 5km of dirt that is really corrugated. I took the T up that way about a month ago and will not be doing it again untill the road is fixed. There is a great route from Wentworth Falls all the way to Glenbrook but only if you have a mountain bike. If anybody is interested in Mountain Bikeing let me know.

  22. For sure lets take a different route. Stuff the Great Western Hwy..... No. It ain’t the Oberon Rd. It is a series of back roads that are so quiet that last time I went to the 1000, I left just after the presentation and only saw one other car on the entire trip back to Lithgow. It was shown to me by a mate who used to live along the route, about 15km out of Bathurst. He suggested it as an alternative when the Highway was closed due to snow at Mount Lambie one weekend. I have since used it for trips home from the 1000 or just as an interesting alternative to the Highway, although I haven’t used it for about 4 years, since my mate moved out of Bathurst. Whilst it is no big secret I would rather not publish the details on the Interweb as I’m sure the locals don’t want their quiet roads turned into a major thoroughfare, even for just one day of the year. I will prepare some legible directions and PM them to MissXR and anybody else who is interested.
  23. I just had the oil changed at ~7,500km I took it to my local mechanic around the corner. I provided the oil, so I know exactly what went in it. He provided the filter and labour and disposal of old oil etc. Cost me $37 (I think) Plus another $35 for 10l of GTX3. He gave me back the left over 3 litres. Plus while my wife was picking the car up she arranged for our son to do his school work experience there.
