You can get a dyno run to show whatever power you want to see, if that appeals to you, but on most non-hub dynos it will depend on how well strapped down the car is and ramp rate used. Far more credible is a good mph in a run at the track at full weight. Don't worry to much about the time. I know from experience, as for 3 years I copped a "dyno queen' tag. Believe me, a high speed run down the track is very exciting. As for exhaust I was running a 4" into dual 3" over the diff in 2003, but that was not for big power, just 340-360rwkw. That was all just R&D to see the effect of changes (and for looks). The exhaust was too big for the power, but also in those days we didn't have the low restriction cats that are available now. Also, not all mufflers are created equal, and you get what you pay for. As power increases you want the least restrictive muffler possible. I put looks aside, and a few years ago went to a straight single pipe with 4" over the diff and a single low restriction muffler. Downside it is very loud, but I think in many ways it depends if the car is a daily driver, and how much noise you can take, AND if your wife is a passenger. I could probably pick up an estimated 30 rwkw by going to a screamer pipe as my wastegate is poorly integrated with the dump pipe, coming in at a 90 degrees angle. I think you reach a point where you hit a brick wall with trying to screw more boost in. Just because your turbo might be able to provide more boost it doesn't mean that it will be able to be used efficiently in generating more power. By all means try it and see. Brian

Jim and I have been discussing more potential changes today, and he has already basically rebuilt and improved a lot of what I started wit; but there is always room for improvement. It never stops. To be continued in another thread. Brian

Thanks Justin, Coral Sea resort, Airlie Beach, this Saturday Never been there, but just want a break before xmas. Brian

Lol indeed.. nothing to do with performance, I said "in steering weighting and feel, and turn-in" in an casual driving situation, not driven hard, comparing the 3 models. John has driven his FG hard, and reports the FG is pretty good in standard guise. Brian

BA auto and manual both share the same 3.45 ratio diff. BF manual 3.73; ZF auto has 2.73 diff. How much power do you have, and auto or manual. Brian

Enjoy it, and take it easy until you get used to it. You'll want more and the addiction starts. Insane is when you double the standard power. Brian

I'm going FNQ in 2 weeks. I'd probably only drive to Brisbane if I kept going after getting a new gearbox in Warwick. So undecided. Brian
-
Oh I thought this thread on the old car was closed. The new engine is about 700km into a run period with low power (around 50% power at 330rwkw). Big decision is whether to keep or sell it. If I keep it it'll get an upgraded box & clutch and probably more money on other things. No doubt about it: a big powered manual is a man's car. I'd forgotten how satisfying it is. Brian

John, Thanks for allowing me to have a drive of your FG manual yesterday. I’ve been driving my BA manual for the last 2 weeks, and prior to that my BF, interspersed with driving the STi’s and my sons EVO. I commented to Jim after getting back into the BA just how much better I thought that the BA front end was over the BF, both in steering weighting and feel, and turn-in. Both my BA & BF F6’s have the same Tein suspension with EDFC, and bigger sway bars. I have never been a fan of the BF front suspension. I had a high expectation for the FG, but it did nothing for me. Admittedly a standard suspension and I was not driving hard; as you commented the FG is much better at speed. I had higher expectations of the new gearbox over the T56. Yes it is definitely better, but 1-2 shifts are still clunky, has a stiffness to it, and not a smooth change, or as smooth as I expected; especially after driving the 6-speed manuals in my STi’s. Clutch is very light compared to the AP twin-plate of the F6, although not as light as an R8 clutch (which I refer to as a girls clutch). Oh, and after being used to 6-pots, stock brakes just don’t cut it. The first time I braked I realized how used to late braking I’m used to. Obviously the FG interior is far better than the BA or BF, but I expected more from a drivers perspective out of the FG. I didn’t think I’d say it, but I felt better getting back into my BA again, not because of the gearbox, but it felt better on the road for everyday driving…. Maybe because I’m used to the BA setup I have ,although I had not driven the BA for 15 months. Brian

Looking up some old graphs, for comparative purposes: 638rwkw Nov07 with C16 ... tune I ran a 138mph at wsid on street tyres ... then various other mods 614rwkw Feb08 with 98 BP Ultimate 637rwkw Jul08 with 100ron shell Same dyno, so wheel slip and other variations bypassed. It comes down to the efficiency of the vehicle setup, and having dyno equipment to measure combustion efficiency. You can make good power with 98, but it just doesn't feel anywhere near as good as the 100 that Shell withdrew from the market. For daily driving it's more realistic to detune somewhat, due to 98 fuel variability, and in my case avoid writing off another car. Brian

Fixing up original build "issues". Once you get to 600 it's more a matter of reliability rather than more power, unless you just want a dyno queen. Designs can always be improved, but Spiro looks to have a very good setup here for making the power. Pushing the rpm limit to 7000 and above+ puts extra stresses on the motor, and only in time can you tell how well balanced or strong a motor really is. Get into aggressive drag racing these cars with full weight, only then are they are really tested. I'm sure Spiro knows this, and it's a credit to him for undertaking the journey. Brian

Bad luck Spiro. I'm surprised you bent the tailshaft. Maybe you gave it too much off the line, and it is a weakness. A number of people, including myself, have bent the tailshaft in ZF auto, but that was from stalling it up off the line, but if you don't do that it seems to be ok. I done about 4 135+ mph passes in the manual, with the tailshaft being fine. But I'd say I only ever did one hard launch off the line in the manual, and that stuffed the clutch (AP with twin ceramics) straight away. It's the hard launches that kills the drivetrain; a huge weight to try to shift quickly. Slicks will also give more stress to the drivetrain. I'm surprised you went out on normal tyres ... wheelspin hell, and a waste of time. I get my car (xr6t8u) back Saturday, after 15 months off the road, so I'll be after a better clutch also, so time to talk to Mal again, and one of those wonderful cruises up Warwick. Good luck, Brian

Good luck Spiko. Glad to see that Mal was able to sort you out with box & clutch. Brian

It happened to me back in December 2003, when I had 340rwkw. I was one of the first (if not the first) to have a Walbro fitted, as I wanted a pump upgrade, and it stopped working within a week of having it fitted. Simply failed. Happened as I was leaving the first fordxr6forum xmas event down near Bong Bong. Over 100km tow home and $200+ tow cost. There's many guys that use these pumps, and I believe the failure rate is very low. Other problems arise from incorrect fitment. Brian

Good work John. Another car for the stable. Give it a couple of weeks. Brian

The original thread post was just stirring the pot, based on the politics of the times. Brian
-
That's racing. Fantastic effort Dave with that 60'. Brian
-
Great setup; I have it in 3 of my cars with EDFC. Just a tip if you have an EDFC. Don't put your mobile phone next to it. It will interfere with the EDFC and cause the EDFC to power off. Brian

Very good effort by Dario last night in ZF BF F6, a new Tunehouse customer. His first time to the track, 11.0 and 130mph PW IC & plenum, Tunehouse exhaust & tune. Very good considering ZF is flaring. So close to a 10! Brian

Sorry to hear about this Mal. I hope it gets resolved without too much drama, more importantly your bruises and shock go away quickly. Brian

Both are forum advertisers, and both have 6 years of XR6T tuning behind them. Check out their premises and their sub-forums. Both have their own band of loyal & happy customers. Brian

Good result Frank. Very strong between 2500 to 3500rpm .... from 140rwkw to 330rwkw, so that should be really good on the street. New Tunehouse 4" exhaust works very well. Brian

They live just up the road from me. When I spoke to them last year they had no experience with xr6 turbo's. Sounds like a publicity stunt to me. Their 100ron fuel is worse than 98, based on testing and usage with 3 different cars, and verified at wsid. Brian
