I might be there too yee haa
  2. I'm in for 1 x GP and 2 x Lunch. thanks
  3. Hi scruffman, I hope this will help. In any audio system the most common cause of distortion is known as clipping. Without going into any technical details the amp bascically pushes beyond its means and a nice "round" sine wave becomes flat at the top and bottom.... any hoo that is distortion. I would believe this to be the case upon first examination. Another thing that is extrememly relevant is that the lower the frequency the more "power" it takes to reproduce that frequency at the same level as a different higher frequency. So if you are boosting the bottom end ie using loudness or turning up the bass this will contribute to the amp being worked a lot harder and therefore maybe clipping. Having said the above it could aslo be as you suggested any part of the system. If however at lower volumes there is no distortion it is almost certainly not the head unit. Other commonish causes are over extension of the speaker (sub) or that the front end of the amp is overloading (the least likely of the three). To tell exactly I would need a CRO to plug into all points of the audio chain to see whats happening. If you like you could play a song (something that I may have on CD any AC DC is fine) and tell me where your settings are (ie bass treble and loudness) and at what volume the distortion starts happening. I can then replicate that and let you know what I find. Anway I hope this helps a bit. cheers david PS and I completly agree that in 2004 the screen should be much much better. God a $4000 keyboard comes with a touch screen these days... why can't a $45K car.
  4. Hi MS700 I wasn't doubting the figure, and now you have explained it's at 34 Hz it all makes perfect sense, thanks. This post has certainly stirred some interest in me in Car sound and how and why the measurments are taken as they are. I will do some reading lastly I would love to see the car sometime. Thanks extreme you are right as well. I was trying to make the point simple and one of the fact that doubling the fat ladies "size" would be equivalent to the intensity of her heel on your foot. Sorry for any misunderstanding it was a bad analagy to use. cheers david
  5. Hi turb06 I am not sure about the $$ involved in making the system louder, however a simple bunch of figures can probably be transfered or at least give you an idea of how much power is required. keep in mind these figures don't take into consideration any real world factors (speaker efficiency, number of speakers, porting etc) thus are only guesstamites. However it will give you an idea of the representation If we have a "perfect speaker" and at 1 Watt/m^2 it produces 120dB therefore to produce 155dB we would need 3000 W/m^2 so to produce 168dB we would need around 60,000 W/m^2 LOL... you tell me how much more that would cost? cheers david
  6. Quote richard_mmmm Posted on Oct 19 2004, 07:16 PM Absolutley right richard, thanks I should have mentioned it Think of it as a lady standing on your foot with a stilleto heel. Or in our case level hitting your ear drum. (NB, not pressure measured in Pa as this doubles every 6dB SPL) if you add 3dB to her she doubles in size, add another 3db she doubles again. Shes gone from a shapely 60kg beauty to a 240Kg heffer (in 6dB)on the same heel.. and your squealling like a banshee! pray nobody adds another 3dB to her. cheers david
  7. QUOTE (Trough Lolly @ Oct 19 2004, 11:53 PM) Just to rebutt the critisciam of me above. 1. the info is the current figures released from the National Acoustic Laboritory (2002 I think). The premier acostical and noise institute in this country, they are also in step with the reasearch from nth America on this subject. 2. The SPL was measured with a B & K 4191 microphone and smarrt audio software. Which I calibrated before I tested. 3. Even if I had used a cheap "no name" SPL meter ie a radio shack thing, the figures wouldn't be out by more than + or- 1% especially when calibrated before hand. 4. Lastly I have been studying acoustics and vibration since before you were born Trough Lolly. I see you are interested in car acoustics and that's great. Keep reading and debating as I agree with you that the 155dB figure MS700 claims is very high. However given that this may have been read on an SPL meter with the weighting off ( we don't know) and that on a quick glance it looks like the aussie record is around the 168b dB mark???.. then its certainly not impossible at all. lol... your brain would probably be rattling around in your head at that level. If you would like any more info on acoustics etc please Pm me as calling my post a load of BS is quite insulting given my years of research and work in the field. We all know everything at 19, now that I am 39 I realise that I really know nothing. my 2 cents worth. david
  8. HI rusht Yes, all the EQ was at the "0" point in the middle, this should mean no cut or boost.
  9. Second pair for me...... but I prefer jeff's
  10. HI Everyone, as promised I finally ran a few tests over the weekend on the system and came up with the following. I tested 3 songs and measured the loudness using an "a" weighted scale. This approximates the human ear at around 40 phon.. any hoo har.. getting a litle technical there, its like what we really hear. So when the stereo is cranked up to 25 with no EQ, compression or any other shaping (loudness etc) in the premium system I came up with the following figures. Song 1 , Jamiroquai canned heat 107-112dB peaked @ 121dB Song 2 , Anastacia I'm outta love 105-112dB peaked @ 122.2 dB song 3, ACDC Back in Black, 99-107dB peaked @117dB So you can see that its pretty loud. to put it in perspective, the following table shows how loud for how long till permanent hearing damage starts. 85 dB 8 hours 88 dB 4 hours 91 dB 2 hours 94 dB 1 hour 97 dB 30 minutes 100 dB 15 minutes 103 dB 7.5 minutes 106 dB < 4min 109 dB < 2min 112 dB ~1 min 115 dB ~30 sec So as I suggested for all of those of you who like their music loud turn it down a bit. It simply means that you will be able to listen to it for longer, not just in the short term, but for the rest of your lives. Last thing (which surprised even me) was that at this incredible level there was no audible distortion coming from the system... and I reckon for $1000 that's pretty good. anyway my 2 cents worth :flameman:
  11. Interesting... when I picked up my BLUEPRINT in Jan.... I was told by 3 different dealers that Narooma was no longer available.... what gives?
  12. HI Lumpen They are Yamaha MSP10 Studios, designed by the creator of the famour NS10... and a good pair of speaker too.
  13. lol.. I hope one day you remember this post when your hearing starts to fail, and given your post... it will.. and long before its time. The premium sound is a good accurate sound system and well worth the extra money. I know I tested it thouroughly before I invested. If you want tub-thumpin bass, this is not the sound system for you. However if you want a car system that will deliver a good representation of what the original should be, the XR premium sound is excellent, and better than anything you can buy for $1000. my 2 cents worth PS.. if its loud... its loud.... and you will suffer permanent hearing loss, no one escapes
  14. mmmm love to see them mount that engine transversly!.. and AWD now that's a car! Pity its in white otherwise I'd buy it  Long Live Team Blueprint!
  15. Yep.. I'm with the rest... really good looking wheels
  16. NYOPA

    my new wheels

Woo Hoo... they look schmick! Please post some pics of em on the car. cheers
  17. Jesus.... 25........ are you deaf? I'm only guessing.. but I reckon that would be pushing about 105-115 db..... or in other words.. about 10 mins before you suffer permanent hearing loss the're your ears, but my humble suggestion would be to turn it down a bit. till the speakers don't distort, it could also be the amp clipping. I will have a listen and get back to you. cheers
  18. White Tee.... yep... you are soooo gorn for that one.. lmao
  19. put me down for GP challenge... lol.. as long as we reverse the grid and the cars for the second race..... theres nothing worse than getting a dog of a cart!
  20. I get around 400 k's out of a tank. about 13-15 L per 100Km -pretty standard I think
