2007 Fpv Tornado Ute - Tinkering & Setup
PhilMeUp replied to PhilMeUp's topic in Members Cars and Modifications
That's the one part that I've got covered for the right price. 20L drum of Gulf Western Syn-TS for $125. I found Lifeguard for $30/litre, but the Gulf Western has a good reputation on various forums. --------------------------------- News back from transmission guy: torque converter is stuffed, $800 to recondition it. Going to spend a day or two trying to find a good turbo transmission and converter. Will resell the one that I bought yesterday (for a profit). -

What I can't figure out is why it is that ZFs are so easy to rebuild, and yet so expensive. If I could get it done cheap enough then I'd get the old transmission rebuilt. Parts are easy enough to get, either from the US or Motospecs ( http://www.motospecs.com.au). The labour component doesn't seem to be huge... the parts don't cost millions... why does it cost four grand for a decent rebuild? -

Will probably also be a rip-off. If postage from the US is too much, and you're in Perth, I've got a Shipito shipment leaving the US in a week or so and coming to Perth.

The same Brembo calipers were also used on the Lexus IS-F and the mid-2000s top end AMG Mercs. Maybe one of those cars uses the same bolts? ie http://www.hawkperformance.com/performance-street/pads/hb616z607 I lost the centre bolt from one of my calipers. That bolt wasn't available from Ford, so I got a Lexus kit from the US: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00KWDX3GI/ref=pe_385040_30332190_TE_3p_dp_1

Yep, getting the wheels is the pain-in-the-arse part. After putting my Brembo stuff together, I then spent three months looking for suitable wheels. I wanted something that was easy to clean. Finally found some in Geraldton. I spontaneously drove 948km there and back in one night just to buy them. http://www.fordxr6turbo.com/forum/topic/75465-photo-essay-driving-948km-just-to-buy-some-wheel/

Ah. These ones? From: http://www.fordxr6turbo.com/forum/topic/90499-photo-essay-swapping-brembo-calipers-between-babf-and-fg/?hl=fg+bracket.#entry1543939 While the bolts were out I measured them. The threads are 70mm long, the width is M12 and the thread is a 1.5. I posted some bolt dimensions for 4 piston Brembo calipers as well a while ago: http://www.fordxr6turbo.com/forum/topic/90508-photo-essay-rebuilding-brembo-calipers
-
Do you mean the bolts that attach the caliper to the car? ie the ones labelled 15mm - they are used on standard and Brembo calipers. Get some from a wreck if you don't have your previous ones: or the smaller ones that are on standard calipers?
-
They don't exactly vibrate loose, but do them up moderately tight, and with some Loctite on them if you're concerned.

2007 Fpv Tornado Ute - Tinkering & Setup

He normally charges $300 to fit a transmission, although this one will cost extra for swapping over the mechatronics and a few other things. Didn't want to spend big money at the moment - don't have it. I bought this car 5 months ago, and I still haven't gotten it licenced in WA yet. I've dropped the ball on this lately, so decided this week to get the damn thing mobile and licenced. I've stuffed this project up. And it was meant to be a quick and easy one. The NA transmission might end up being a short-term solution, but it gets the car mobile now, and at a low cost. I bought the NA transmission today for $200 (108,000km on it). Too good to ignore. I'd rather take my time and find a better option, but that was an immediate solution that will have to do for now. If/when I see a good turbo ZF later then I'll buy it. I might even buy a wrecked car later, keep the transmission and recoup money by selling parts off the wreck. But the immediate priority was to prevent letting this project drag on any longer. Stop procrastinating. Later on I'll do some research on exactly what the differences are been NA and turbo ZFs, and the differences between BF and FG ones. But, for now, re-commit to the project and get the car licenced and in use. -
Tighten until the head snaps off. Replace broken bolt with new one. Don't tighten the new one up quite as much.

The verdict: ZF transmission is stuffed. Bugger. Bought an NA one for $200 (yes, two hundred). It was cheap because the plastic sump was cracked (Pickles being careless with moving wrecks with a forklift). Bought a steel sump, gasket and filter kit for $205 yesterday. Nigel at AC Automatics is on it (ie formerly Alfred Cove Automatics, but he's now in Welshpool). He looked up the differences between NA and turbo ZFs, and the only difference is something minor in the clutches. I won't be quite so cheerful about it all when I get the bill later, but so far this guy has been the one to go to for transmission stuff. No problem with using the 20L drum of Gulf Western Syn-TS that I bought. He'll mix and match the required parts from each transmission, eg torque converter, mechatronics, etc. Very down-to-earth, straight shooter. He's a problem solver. Meanwhile, car is booked in for a licencing inspection next Thursday. -

Not a whole lot of help here, but how I replaced the broken cog in an actuator last year: http://www.fordxr6turbo.com/forum/topic/89014-photo-essay-central-locking-repair You can get repair kits via eBay.

For our regular viewers: I just got word that the transmission is stuffed. Bugger. I've got one lined up cheap, but it's a non-turbo one. The only difference is something minor in the clutches. I've finally committed and booked the car in for an inspection next Thursday. 'Spose I'd better have the transmission sorted by then. -

Cool. I'll meet you outside the inspection place and you can quickly chuck the standard dump pipe, cat and intake manifold on in the carpark. And then put the good stuff back on as soon as the inspection is done. What suburb are you in? I've just left the Tornado with a transmission place in Welshpool so that the guy there can have a look at it tomorrow. Transmission is slipping and generally being impolite. Hopefully it's just something simple - blocked filter. -

The end result will be worth it, but this one has been waaaaaaaaaaaaaaayyyyyy more complicated than I could have ever expected. The list of workshops that do inspections is changing regularly. DOT recently stopped Complete Cabs in Welshpool from doing inspections. I downloaded the PDF list yesterday, and there are several removals and additions when compared to a list from a few months earlier. DOT has really spat the dummy this year. That has become very clear from the conversations that I've had with mechanics who are authorised to do inspections. Maybe I should have kept this thing licenced in NSW for the first 12 months after all (ie then it can be transferred to WA without an inspection). -
Easier said than done. I tried swapping springs on the blue Tornado with some spring compressor thingies. It was getting too dangerous. Way too much force built up in the spring tension, and I knew that if something slipped then I'd cop some broken bones in my fingers. I ended up taking the shocks and springs to a suspension place the next day. http://www.fordxr6turbo.com/forum/topic/89684-2006-fpv-tornado-f6-ute-cleanup-resurrection/#entry1521309 I've had some ripper moments here... 5am... can't figure out how to put something back together... angry... frustrated.. wanna give up... but the taxi has to be back in one piece and working before the day driver turns up at around 7am. Can't really call people for advice at 5am. Although I have since found someone who's on call at night for $55 an hour. However, having a go at something and failing is useful... you might not achieve the final objective, but you've still explored and learned something.

Done. Nup. Had a solution lined up for this week, but couldn't get an inspection booking. Might have another go at it on Tuesday. As I'll keep repeating to everyone for the next decade: DO NOT EVER GET A YELLOW STICKER ON A MODIFIED FALCON. When I get this thing licenced I'm gonna weld the $&^# bonnet shut so that no cop can ever see the engine bay. -
Have you got the springs fitted to the shocks? Heck, if it's just a matter of swapping shocks over then I'll have a go at it. You oughta see some of the screw-ups that I've made here in recent years. I have an exceptional ability to turn a simple one-hour job into an all-nighter. I broke a world record this week for making the most mess ever in a single oil change. Really screwed that one up. That Camry (taxi) and I hate each other. When people win Lotto and are asked about the first thing they'll do, the common answers are about paying house mortgage, helping family, etc. For me, it will be burning that Camry.
-
Surprising. Call Angelo on 0412 124 902. He's got a workshop in Bayswater, across the road from Wilkinson Suspension. Which is handy - you might as well get a wheel alignment done after changing out the front shocks. Heck, maybe I should do it on Sunday, and put the money toward an Xcal.... Edit: Actually....
-
Price?
-
He had a Gumtree listing for the Xcal 4 and ID1000 injectors for $700. When I got there he still had the injectors left. He gave me a price of $300 for them, but I passed. The advert was taken down the next day, so it would be a safe assumption that someone else bought the injectors.
-
Yep, I literally fell asleep. And I got here sometime between 1:30 and 2pm. Close one. Married Xcal 3s can be bought for almost nothing. I might have a deal lined up where I get a married 3 in exchange for doing some maintenance on a BF wagon (ie something that I actually know something about). If that eBay seller actually can reset them then that's the way to go. Once I've got the car sorted and running properly I'll get it re-tuned. It was tuned by a place in Sydney that isn't a Falcon specialist. It's also a sh*tload thirstier on petrol than I expected. I also don't have the Xcal that the previous owner had, so I can't set it back to Valet, etc.
-
Well done. How much did the Xcal sell for? http://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/melville/engine-engine-parts-transmission/gtx3576r-turbo-xr6-g6et/1092964209
