I understand the problem that cyclists aren't allowed to ride on the footpath therefore they must ride on the road. What I don't understand is why cyclists on Beach road (Melbourne) don't use the bike path that is specifically designated for them? Here is what beach road looks like every day: http://www.bv.com.au/file/inform/beach%20rd.jpg Notice the bike path on the bottom right. This is what they have in Holland: http://p.streetsblog.org/wp-content/upload...echt_biking.jpg Notice that there is a seperate: a) footpath b) bike lane c) road This is the only solution. For some reason cyclists in Australia refuse the bike lane though, this makes the road a dangerous place for everybody, as it makes it necessary to merge all the time to go around cyclists in peak hour. I think that the problem is that in Australia all cyclists think that they are all the next Tour de France champion - they even dress in such a way. In Europe people cycle sensibly. Just compare the two pictures. I beleive that cyclists are great since it means that there is less vehicle traffic and congestion on the roads. We should provide them with off road bike paths - but would cyclists even use them ???
