Theres a very good chance that i'm wrong, but i was of the belief it was a 6T that they were modifying to fit twin turbo's. Edit: RAPTOR RAGE STRIKES THE STREETS THE nightmare of Jurassic Park will hit Melbourne this month when a 21st Century Raptor is released into the urban environment. This is no Spielbergian fantasy - the real-life Raptor is a modern metal predator cloned from past and current ''killers'' and incubated in a remote laboratory with the specific aim of ambushing and exterminating everything in its path. Or at least, everything in its automotive path …for this ''autopod'' is the latest brainchild of Bob Roman at Roman Auto-Tek who brought you such famous ''killer machines'' as The Beast (a 900bhp bitumen-burning street machine) and the Hilliers Arrow Coupe (a radical two-door coupe development of the Ford XR8 sedan). Bob Roman''s vision to produce an international-class Aussie concept car with radical design attributes, dates back to the seventies. But the complexity of high-tech concepts is beyond the scope of most artisans in the country - so the project was put ''on ice'' for many years. However the recent affiliation with Hillier Conversions (i.e the Arrow Coupe) revealed a company with the smarts and skills to produce an Aussie icon to the Roman Auto-Tek concept. Three years in gestation, the showcar underwent an intensive one-year development to reach Stage One today. The Raptor 600+ is a purpose-built predator designed to reflect the heat on the street. It marks the resurgence of that inimitable Aussie icon, the Ute which it has translated into a modern super-performance go-and-show machine. Its name is derived from the Momo Raptor look-alike range of automotive performance equipment introduced last year by Roman Auto-Tek and the engine which will develop 600+ bhp (450kW) in its ultimate twin-turbo, fully-worked format. As vehicles go, this is no dinosaur. The donor machine is nothing less than Ford''s current XR6 turbocharged Ute from the COTY-winning Ford Falcon BA range. This is arguably the most advanced ute on the Aussie market. The coachwork of the Raptor features radical styling concepts such as Gullwing doors (shaped into the likeness of a Raptor skull), and hewn from a lowered and swept-back cockpit turret. It also has trademark deep ducting in the sideflanks, a raised aerodynamic bonnet (ultimately to be equipped with integrated external instrumentation), re-crafted trayback and advanced body air-management kit. The gullwing doors are the bravest of styling cues - aligning the vehicle with some of the greatest names in leading-edge automotive design - the Mercedes 300SL Gullwing, the ill-fated DeLorean and the exotic Lamborghini Countach and Diablo (butterfly/scissor- style doors). The Raptor''s gullwings are fully electrically operated. The unusual colour of the Raptor was a joint-creation between Troy Hillier and world-leading paint supplier, PPG. In its ultimate iterations, the Raptor will incorporate such extravagances as active aerodynamic devices - including integrated and electrically-operated draft diffusers. The sub-floor will effectively become a giant ground-effects ''wing'' to provide maximum downforce. But the core of this concept is still a street-legal production version - ready to register and capable of doing a hard day''s utility work. The interior is virtually stock BA XR factory Momo-option incorporating Italian-crafted airbag steering wheel and special gearshifter (for both manual and auto models). To complement the natural European flair of the factory interior, Roman Auto-Tek inserted a pair of Recaro SR Millennium sports seats, renowned for their lateral grip (essential in a race-bred machine), hip-hugging comfort and safety. The central dashboard also remains standard - although special instrumentation will be placed on the trailing edge of the raised bonnet in the Stage Two development to provide a ''heads-up'', through-the-windscreen display. The utility tray is fully functional and, under-the-skin, the machine is a fusion of Falcon workhorse and modern racecar - offering the same agility, manoeuvreability and early-strike capability of its Raptor namesake via tuned suspension, steering and brake packages. Radically improved performance demands radically improved braking - massive Harrop race-bred discs are fitted to the front to ensure it stops as well as it goes while the rear brakes which retain the OEM specs (as they are considered more than adequate) are re-tuned to the uprated system. The wheels have been upgraded to Momo Magnums - massive 20in alloys shod with Pirelli Zero P Nero tyres - 225/35/20 up front and 285/30/20 in back. This Raptor is Generation One. Progressive evolutions will see the current machine morph into a 600bhp+ monster installed with some of the world''s most advanced aero and traction devices and hell-bent on an Australian Land Speed Record - and eventually a World Land Speed Record - for its class. The Raptor is the product of one of the most ''exotic'' partnerships in the Australian automotive Industry - Roman Auto-Tek (Australia) Pty Ltd of Sydney and Hillier Conversions of Tenterfield in the NSW Northern Tablelands. Hillier has a distinguished history as a remarkable Australian coachbuilding firm that produces the country''s finest stretch limos and hearses as well as some unique concepts and projects. These include the co-development with Roman Auto-Tek of a number of street machines including the Ford Arrow Coupe which was the standout star of the 2002 Melbourne Motor Show. Roman Auto-Tek has made a unique transition from premium street performance and after-market retailer to leading quality OEM supplier to Australia''s largest auto manufacturers - marked by the establishment of the magnificent OEM facility at Tullamarine in the heart of Australia''s Motown. The company recently added the prestigious Ford Q1 Quality Supplier accolade to its existing QS9000 AND I9SO 9002 Certifications and picked-up an Australian Achiever Award along the way. It has also moved to cement and expand its reputation for design, development and logistics services to the Australian and International Auto Industries. Co-partners in numerous successful automotive enterprises, these two dedicated Aussie family companies formed a new entity for the Raptor project - Auto-Tek Hillier & Co. This union aims to merge the ideals of big-city design and flair with country-town dedication to quality workmanship to move the operation into a new dimension - as designers and suppliers of quality specialised equipment and motor vehicles to both the motor industry and the general market. And the affiliation also marks a ''changing of the guard'' within the companies… ''If there are any dinosaurs involved in this project, it is the creators,'' said Bob Roman. ''Myself and Gavin Hillier and definately ''senior citizens'' of the auto industry.'' The two patriarchs now plan to hand the flight-deck of the new enterprise to the ''next generation'' Project Managers - Paul Roman and Troy and Clayton Hillier. The youngsters have amassed a wealth of experience operating alongside their mentors on many projects over the years and the Raptor Project marked the official ''baton pass'' from senior to junior during the project development. The new company, led by the ''youth team'' is already planning a series of breakthrough industry initiatives, including the future evolutions of the Raptor. Whichever way, from March 1, 2003, Aussie urban landscape will never be the same.
