Without it being dismantled, it seems more likely to be a whole/cracked piston and/or smashed ring lands. It starts and runs but ZERO compression in 1 and very little in 5. The sound was like 4000 tappets in need of a little bit of oil.

Hey, I may be slightly stupid but I'm certainly not that stupid! I will not be putting a generic tune into it again. I don't even know how those tunes are sold in good faith. I guess it's buyer beware.

Yeah this seems to be the case. There's a few bad stories going around about their engin builds. Cheers mate, will look them up s well as Nizpro. But this would require a tune. I will be doing a couple of mods that dont require a retune (oil pump gears, valve springs, intercooler, piping(?)) but I want do all of the mods that require a retune at once after its run in good and proper.

So it seems my mechanic said he thought it sounded like the upper bottom end and it seems he was right. No compression at all in 1 and very little in 5. No visible holes or cracks in the block, sump etc. It also blew the blow off valve off. He doesn't think there's much point in pulling the head off yet. Will do that once it's out of the car to fit to the new block. His opinion is it massively over boosted and damaged pistons when it backfired. So the Phoon bottom end is on order and I'm looking into valve springs and a billet oil pump gear. Any opinions of good gear to look for?

No worries mate. I'm not that easily miffed. I do know about the stronger rods always being used in the Phoon and apparently from 06/06 onwards that is true for XR6T as well. But what about pistons? As I said, I seem to remember hearing that there are differences?

Why does any one ask questions? Because I like to know what I'm getting. There's usually a reason why things are more expensive. I seem to remember reading or hearing something about different (possibly LPG) pistons being used at some stage. That could be the difference? But yes if I cant get the info, then the Phoon short motor it is.

Hey All, I'm looking at worse case scenarios with my recently smashed donk and have decided that if I have damaged the bottom end that I will be getting a short motor from Ford. Both the Typhoon and XR6T short motors are under $2500 list price. What I'm trying to find out is what are the differences? According to Ford, there are 3 part numbers. 1 is the BA short motor (blah), the other 2 are the BF MKII 10/05 onwards (BAF6009C) and the Typhoon (cant remember month 04 onwards) BAF6009D. Apparently from 06/06 onwards, the Typhoon and XR6T bottom ends are the same. But how do you specify that you want a post 06/06 build short motor? There is no provision for specifying a build date with Ford. Also, why do they have the Typhoon and XR6T bottom ends listed as different part numbers when they're supposedly the same? Interestingly, the Typhoon list price is less than the XR6T. Anyone know anything about this? BTW. I want to say thanks to Simon at Nizpro. I am not a customer but he spent a good 15 minutes on the phone with me and was very helpful. Credit where credit is due.

At an early stage my mechanic agrees partly with my initial diagnosis in that it sounds like it's in the top end. He started it for a very short time and he said the sound is too tinny for bottom end. He hasn't dissassemlbed anything yet. So what are the possibilites here if it is in the top end? Dropped a valve, cracked piston, spark plug, gudgeon pin end of piston? Still, if there is piston damage, I'll just getting an brand new F6 short motor from Ford and do the valve springs while I'm at it. Tthey're reasonably priced at $2500.

I can't agree with you more. Anyone can take your money and give you their product. But how do they handle a situation when things go wrong? If you look after your customers it will come back to you 10 fold. As a contract web developer I've been employed by various third parties over the last 7 odd years to do work for one particular global oil company. Because the 3rd party wasn't making too much money from the deal due to a recent global restructure, the opportunity arose to contract directly for the global oil company. I had always gone out of my to keep them happy and when it came time to discuss a rate, they told me they'd give me the maximum they could. This ended up being 30% more than what I was getting before. Thanks for the heads up GreenXR6T.

Yeah, thought of that too but I would hate to think it is so - a bit unlucky. Damn, sounds familiar...Should now by the end of tha day anyway... Hopefully not...But Atomic 950kw short motor will replace it if it is. I don't know if it matters where the tuner is from but was a mob in Adelaide. I was told generic CAPA tunes are on it. Dayyyyyyyym!
