I don't know Greg personally and I don't know anything of the alleged prior "dodgy" stuff. I just wanted to share my recent experience with him and Taipan. A few months back I was in contact with Greg over a 3 or 4 week period and my experience was very pleasant. In fact, customer service was way above average. I intend to trial the Weapon X coils on my big banger project. We plan on spinning it to around 7500rpm so the reports of these working great in the higher rev range seem to suit my application. We'll see

I also saw some very rubbery figures come off that dyno. Firstly, a guy running 350 odd rwkw came off that dyno with 390rwkw - no change to the tune. I had my car on it and it made 30rwkw less on 4 psi more boost (21 psi!). Funny thing is the very next day, it made 370rwkw at 18psi ... Very consistent - NOT. I can definitely say from being there quite a bit over a 2 month period that his dyno is an archaic POS that is all over the shop. It is not well maintained, was breaking down, wouldn't boot up often, showed varying figures, had dodgy connections to the data acquisition board and was generally in the same state as his workshop, dress sense and personal car. I remember once there was a boost reading of 2psi plugged in to nothing. As our esteemed tuner said, you work it out...

I've went through this a few months back. An as you've found out, the mounting brackets are the issue. Unless you know someone at PBR, you can't get them. You'd have to get some made and complianced. hey but if some did, there's some cheap performance brakes for all. And the Corvette logo is nothing some sand paper and paint cant fix!

Yes good first post. Cant even use the

I'm fairly sure all most people are running stock coil packs, even at 600rwkw levels. I don't know how long they'd last with all that heat. I think a remote mount setup with the stock coil packs and high quality leads would be a step forward in longevity.

Sorry to hear. I'm not sure of the advantages of the FG short versus the post 06/06 BF or Typhoon motors. The FG uses the same rods according to Ford. They have the same part number. Maybe someone in the know cares to comment about the FG vs post 06/06 BF short? How much power do you want to make? I'd grab a Ford short and throw in some rods for safety. Depends on how much you have to spend. If you need rods, PM me.

Gee, thanks Spiro! It goes without saying, and I certainly do not need to mention that I would steer right away from (removed) And in no particular order +1 for Springy Performance, Pit Lane Performance and Blue Power. All extremely competent and very nice people.

I wasn't necessarily responding to your comments Spiro. Just the general topic of RPM on dyno graphs. I remember seeing some dyno graphs which baffled me a couple of years ago. It was because RPM was derived and not actual. I had my dyno graphs printed out with derived RPM which made the power curve seem like it was mental, with power coming in about 1000rpm earlier - very misleading. The print outs using actual RPM from OBD showed a much more accurate and realistic picture.

What about getting RPM from OBD? Most modern dynos have that capability don't they?

Good choice! I liked the flat black The head is not quite finished though porting has been complete. The intake was just cleaned up a little but exhaust was opened to suite 50mm OD manifold piping and larger 33mm valves. We've gone 1mm larger on the exhaust valve. I do plan to do a flow bench test to see what we get but that still isn't really conclusive. From what I understand, there are some gains to be made by using a larger valve and posting on the exhaust side. I've heard some anecdotal evidence that going to large an exhaust valve make power go backwards however I didn't find out what exactly was done in that situation. I'm taking advisement from people who are experts so I'll just have to suck it and see. If it doesn't work out, number 2 head will make an appearance

Thanks TF Spiko, you already are mate! The bar has been set high

Ahaha. Coool. Mint enhanced?

What a coincidence! I'm my stomachs importer for that same whisky So should I expect a case of the 25 to be coming with you Ok, ok. A bottle then?

I don't know how much you know about Broadmeadows Spiro, but trust me, there's no shortage of Baklava! Also, the best non home-made Kourabiethes I've ever had comes from a shop right opposite the Ford main gate. Of course, no one made better ones that what my Mum did And when you come to Melbourne, I've got a Scotch in mind. Ever tried Laphroaig? Laphroaig - the maker of the World's favourite Islay single malt scotch whisky.

Such an infantile attitude! Maybe you could open up with: "You know, I remember reading once that people who need to compare their choice of car to another persons choice of car probably have something missing in their personal lives. A void of unhappiness, a lack of being loved and loving, a small pen*s and generally, a sad outlook on life. These people often create a need to fill that void with unrealistic and untrue generalisations." Then finish with: "And remember: Holden, they found the problem and circled it."

40 psi is some big boost there Trav. Are you ready!? What rims did you end up going with? The flat or glossy or something else? Sounds like a plan Or the housing could encompass the entire bush so it actually houses and locates the bush with the bolt doing what you say. Interesting idea. The cradle would require more serious alterations with that, but it sounds strong. I want to keep the mods to the cradle at a minimum, with the work being in the diff hat/bush combo. But I haven't had a real close look at a cradle to see what we're working with. Spiko's sending me one down apparently

As Anything. Whoops, thought it was the word association thread for a minute. Enjoyed! What a beast. Does a run get any smoother looking than that?

yeah Spiro the Ferrea brand is more than 40 years old. Those Argentinians sure know how to do valve train components. Very nice and extremely helpful to talk with as well. I love the American attitude of getting you what you need, no matter how small the order. IRS...yeeessss. we need to do something about it me thinks. First step is to find out the viability of a twin bush setup. I'll be making some calls and chatting to a few people next week about a custom casting. Anyone got a spare XT IRS assembly? I'll give you a buzz next week Spiro to get your thoughts. I just downed some nice Baklava and a cafedaki. As Xristos Dantis said - "beuatiful"

Hey Trav. The block went back to the machine shop yesterday for billet main caps. Even though we'd chosen a custom valve, I've decided that for longevity and reliability, I'm going for a Ferrea racing custom job. Made form what they call a "super alloy", it has a higher heat rating than Inconel. Should do the job nicely. I've also decided to go for a single groove instead of triple. As we will be pushing the motor to near 8000rpm, I'm being told our high rocker ratio tends to push the valve tip in and it can snap. I've stared research into a possible twin diff bush setup for the IRS as well as strengthening the assembly it all bolts up to. How's your beast going Trav?

What Upgrades To The Bottom End Should I Do?
straughsberry replied to power_slide's topic in Engine Workshop
Yeah and fair enough. If you choose to get your gear through a shop, that's the norm. But my point is that when I'm paying for something, I want to know what components are being used. You may have preferences with some gear given a choice, and then there's some gear that I would definitely not want in my car. My choice of components may be right or wrong in the shops and others eyes, but I'm paying for it! -
Good luck today Spiko. By the time I get to Eden, I'm, expecting to see an easy 10. Go for it champ!

So they want to charge you $3900 for R&R and build + machining. So around $5500-$6500 with machining. What about all of the other gear? Gaskets, harmonic balancer, oil pump gears, head reco, etc. Where does that come into it? I'd want an itemised list of what any shop/builder is intending to give you for your money. And nit giving you brands because the reckon you'll go out and get them cheaper sounds like bollocks. Too bad! If you can get them cheaper, then they need a new supplier Maybe you can organise a better price for the shop. -
I've been flat out over last 2 weeks and I'm heading away so I'll get onto a group buy when I get back. I'm away for 6 days.

Haha I wish! Things keep chaning. I've now decided that I'm not happy with the exhaust valves we've chosen. They are a decent valve, but I'm a little worried they're not going to cope with the heat produced when the wick is turned right up. I'll be making a call to Manley in the next couple of hours.
