1. Thanks! Reliability as a daily driver is definitely where it's at for me mate. Still waiting on the valves for at least another 2 weeks. After that I'll probably wait a further 2 weeks, then I need to make a call on whether or not I need to enforce the contingency plan! Problem is, the contingency plan will double the cost of the valve. Though it will be full custom valve. But does the cost ensure reasonable benefits? That is the question My long motor will cost me around the 18k mark in parts and build. I've spent 11k in parts so far and will need to spend 6 or 7 more to get to where I want to be. And I am using some Atomic products mate, don't you worry I'm going down a different path with a few aspects of my build. It is a journey after all. To try and answer your question: There's a team of 5 or 6 people who are behind this build . And they are all integral to it even being completed. My personal budget is 50k of (which I've spent $26,950.52) but there's also 10's of thousands of dollars in both free time and trade pricing being put into it as well. If you had to pay normal retail rates and labour for what I've done/need to complete, you could probably spend $80,000-$100,000 dollars. You need to look at your budget and work out where to go from there I reckon.
2. Forget the plenums uleh's. Lets talk Tabouhli vs Tsatsiki injection.
3. The saga continues. Still waiting on valves Trav. But I'm putting a contingency into place if these things don't get here in the next 2 or 3 weeks. It's been 4 months!
4. mwwwwwwwuahahahahahahahahahahaha, hahahaha, ha, haha.
5. It looks like that with all this power going around, folks will need a solution for their future traction problems. Well it's time to put down the barbie tongs and crack open a fresh packet of 'launchinatube©' to solve this problem for you. Enjoy!
6. This is the plenum I'll be using on my big-banger project. Looks absolutely awesome. And with those tapered runners, should work like a charm for making big power. I can't wait to get this gear on my car.
7. So did anyone get to the bottom of this so-called twin throttle body setup? Has your MSN list been cleaned and what kind of alloy was used to lighten the front-end by 60kg bro?
8. Yes you will need a retune. You shouldn't loose any power, maybe a small amount if anything. I actually picked up 20rwkw after fitting this stallie and new coil packs. I'd say that was mostly due to the coil packs though.
9. Call Len at Torque Converter Industries in NSW. He does a modified standard converter for the BTR. I've been running one for 2 years and it hasn't skipped a beat. Stall is about 2700rpm.
10. Yeah planning to. It's going to be massif.
11. Hey Trav. Valves should be about a week or 2 away. Nearly there mate. I'm champing at the bit but I've had to learn the art of patience like never before on this one. How's your beast going mate?
12. Totally mad. I'd say this project is heading in the right direction. You'll have to put some A3 paper into that printer soon. A massive well done to all involved.
13.
You are an authority in all things good I see. Nizpro springs are straight from China and have proven to be real good, not. Atomic are a well proven product yes, straight from the USA as are the Crow springs, same same. The Performance range are local, and are used by some very well known tuners, do some homework. But hey, you lead everyone in the right direction dude, you are the man!
I've spoken to 2 tuners about valve springs and they prefer the Performance valve springs over the Nizpro units. One refuses to use Nizpro valve springs because of the amount of problems they've had. I'm not bashing Nizpro here. Just calling a spade a spade and as EGOXRT eludes to, people have had issues with the Nizpro valve springs. But who knows. They may have sorted their "water damage" issues and they might be ok now .
14. Hey fellas. yes Trav, still planning on going to the mother of all dyno days Yeah still moving. Still waiting on the valves. Should be about another 4 weeks away.
15. I remember that. What would you say a conversion would be roughly worth?
16. They are different. Exhaust valves on turbo motors are Inconel. AFAIK, Ford have the only stock sized Inconel exhaust valves available. Atomic offer a .5mm larger Inconel exhaust valve and matching collets as they are a single groove setup but will suit factory style retainer. Springs will depend on how much boost and power you plan to make. I'd look at the the Crow or Atomic Ovate springs. I believe they can handle 40+psi from a big turbo. Specs are available on the Atomic and Crow websites.
17. @blow off: 6 BTR's - damn! But No doubt about it, the TH400 can be built very tough. The thing that put me of was lack of overdrive. Diff ratios goes part way to solving that and would be a good in between option. GVOD is an option too but you then get the shift timing issue when you have to shift out of the OD and shift up the trans. I saw some vids of it and it put me off. Especially for the $$$. I chose the 65 because for now, it fits the daily driver target I'm aiming for. Thanks for the well wishes. My personal experience with the builder has been nothing but good so I'm going by that. Glad to hear you have your setup well sorted. Keep us posted. @CCCC: My BTR is still shifting like well done chips. Been holding 350+ rwkw for about 2 years now but without any dragging. If the builder is giving you a warranty to 400rwkw and that fits your requirements, go for it. If you don't plan on doing too much 1/4 mile work, I think a well built BTR will hold mid to high 300's with decent reliability for a couple of years if you look after it. Me wanting to run about 750-850rwhp with the new motor, I had to find something else and one of my build parameters is "daily driver". So I wanted a box with OD. I am being told the 65e should be good for about 800 rwhp on the track and 1000+ on the dyno. We will see. There is a little R&D to do I'm sure. If things turn south with the box, Either a TH400 or PG will be on the cards. I might even look at a 4l80e. Basically a TH400 with OD. It is a big unit.
18. T400 is basically a 3 speed 4l80e. They can be built very strong, but are also a parasitic box and have no overdrive. I've just received a custom bellhousing to mate a 4l65e (a modern 4 speed version of the TH350) to the Barra. It will retain the lockup converter. Conversion should begin in the next few weeks. I'll do a write up when we get around to it.
19. I can assure you, these were genuine Walbro pumps out of the USA. Take off the filter and take a shot of the inlet. That's what they should look like.
20. It's an anti-surge cover.
21. A 91mm turbo
22. It not just about metal gears. There are fakes that have metal gears but are not gerotor design. It has to be a gerotor design. One more time for good luck: G-E-R-O-T-O-R.
23. One sure way to tell is by taking a look at the pump intake. The genuine Walbro is a gerotor style pump and not a vane type pump. This is the same style as our oil pump gears. Look at this pic: http://www.autoperformanceengineering.com/pics/pump_ends.jpg Notice the in the middle pic you can see the gerotor design. This is what it should look like. If id doesn't it's a fake.
